Firefox 4, Firefox parties, Hackasaurus, Join Mozilla and more…

In this issue…

Say hello to the Firefox 4 release candidate
Last week we officially closed the beta cycle for Mozilla Firefox 4 for Windows, Mac and Linux and welcomed our release candidate in more than 70 languages. The millions of users testing Firefox 4 will be automatically updated to this version and will join our Mozilla QA team in validating the new features, enhanced performance and stability and HTML5 capabilities in Firefox 4. If you haven’t tried it yet, please do!

Join Mozilla supporter program live in beta
Join Mozilla went live in beta on Friday in English and German. Huge thank you to everyone who helped with ideas, design, code, l10n, QA, legal, and security. The plan is to be in beta for the next 6-8 weeks, followed by rolling campaigns throughout the year. Read more details at the wiki. You can sign up and check out the program at https://www.mozilla.org/join.

Enter the Hackasaurus
Atul Varma gives us an update on his new role at Mozilla focusing on a project called Hackasaurus: “a toolkit and curriculum to help kids and other “non-techies” understand the Web and how to hack it.” He adds: “…as Mitchell likes to say: at Mozilla, we don’t just talk. We make things. And Hackasaurus is a toolkit and curriculum to help ordinary people see through the Matrix and understand, at a visceral level, what makes the Web so awesome.” Find out more here!

Firefox developers talk with reddit community
Last Thursday several people from across the Mozilla project participated in a live discussion on reddit.com to talk about Firefox 4 RC and answer any questions the reddit community had. Over 2,500 redditors participated and there were over 3,000 comments. Read more.

Get your Firefox party on!
We’re getting very close to launch and in line with our longstanding tradition Mozillians will be hosting Firefox launch parties around the world. Celebrate the hard work around the launches of Firefox 4 for desktop and mobile by hosting your own or attending one. Check out our party page.

Firefox 4 Credits
As you may know, Mozilla recognizes those responsible for putting significant time into Mozilla by adding them to the official credits list for Firefox. This page is available as ‘about:credits’ in all the browsers we have shipped since 1998. With the release of Firefox 4 on desktop and mobile coming up, we’d like to make sure the list is as complete as possible. Please check the credits and let us know if your name is not already there. If it’s not and should be, please send a note to credits at mozilla dot org.

  • Open Web Apps out in the wild
Ragavan Srinivasan writes that we’ve made the first developer integration release of our Open Web Apps project available!  His post includes a great and informative video on what a “web app” is and details on how to take part and next steps for the project. ReadWriteWeb picked up the story and says we make “a better case for web apps in minutes than Google did in months.”

    Updated Skype Toolbar Extension Available
A new version of the Skype Toolbar for Firefox was released this week, correcting the conditions that caused Firefox to crash when using the extension. Skype users can obtain the new version of the extension by updating their copy of Skype, or by downloading a new version from the Skype website.

    Web O’ Wonder
With the final release of Firefox 4 just around the corner, the new Web O’ Wonder website showcases out-of-this-world demos and illustrates the new web standards support coming in Firefox 4. Awesome new demos will be added regularly so make sure to tune in frequently and enjoy HTML5 goodness. Check out the website here.

Mitchell Baker joins the Ada Initiative Advisory Board
The Ada Initiative, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing participation of women in open technology and culture, has just welcomed Mitchell Baker to its advisory board. To find out more about Ada Initiative and its work, visit their official website.

Upgrading graphics drivers for Firefox 4
Firefox 4 supports new technologies such as WebGL and hardware acceleration, but it requires the use of updated graphics drivers for Windows, Mac OS and X11. The Mozilla Hacks blog and Mozilla platform engineer Benoit Jacob share with us where to get the updated graphics drivers to make the most of Firefox 4.
