Firefox 4 Upgrade Campaign, Knight-Mozilla News Innovation Challenge and more…

In this issue…

Firefox 4 upgrade campaigns

We’ve begun creating several Firefox 4 upgrade campaigns to encourage users to migrate to the latest version. One of the ways we’re doing this is by creating a number of different versions of our download page, each version explaining the benefits of using Firefox for various forms of activities people do on the Web. Check out all of the versions and tell the casual gamers, web workers and media streamers in your life about Firefox 4.

Oh the things we can do with browsers!

Chris Heilmann put together a presentation about all of the things a modern browser can do for the Firefox 4 launch party in London. After looking at all of this new technology, pick something and play with it and then send us your cool demo so we can show the world.

Mozilla around the world

There is a vibrant community of Mozilla contributors all around the world and there are over 50 local sites that are used to coordinate activities in different regions. We’re designing some new pages to showcase all of the great things going on in these different areas—take a look to see where these communities are and start your own local site to help bring Mozilla to new areas.

Fun with Rainbow

Dan Mosedale shares how he’s mashed up Rainbow’s ability to record audio and video with popcorn.js’ subtitling to create a web-based Karaoke experiment. You can record yourself singing along to Jono Xia’s accordion rendition of “Amazing Grace” – all without Flash! Have some fun with it and learn why he did it.

First 2011 Knight-Mozilla News Innovation Challenge open!

Help unlock video by joining our first 2011 Knight-Mozilla news challenge. The gist: How can new web video tools transform news storytelling? It’s easy to participate – just submit a sketch and paragraph that illustrates your idea for telling stories better with online video.

New release channels, report from Kenya, the future of Spread Firefox and more…

In this issue…

New Channels for Firefox Rapid Releases
Following the amazing release of Firefox 4, Mozilla Firefox is moving to a rapid release development cycle to deliver new features, performance enhancements, security updates and stability improvements to users faster. Check out the new Firefox Channels page to help us make the next versions of Firefox great (you can also see some great new logos).

Report from Firefox 4 Party in Kenya
Pierros reports from the Firefox 4 party in Nairobi, Kenya. Alex and Linnet, local community superstars, organized an event that had over 200 people talking about Firefox and Mozilla (and eating cake). Check out the report to learn more about that party and look at our Party meetup page to find a party near you.

Help others and learn web development
Mozilla and P2PU want to thank everyone who volunteered to create a study group or course, provide us with content or help a fellow learner for the School of Webcraft. If you’d like to feel the warm glow that learning with others (and helping them learn) brings, find out about how you can participate.

Re-evaluating Spread Firefox
Mary Colvig of the Contributor Engagement gives an update on Spread Firefox, our longtime grassroots marketing site. We’ll be taking the site offline to further explore what makes sense in terms of volunteer engagement. The site is facing a few technical challenges and participation has dwindled as supporters have moved to Facebook and other platforms to advocate Firefox. Please check out the post for further details, provide feedback and/or help.

QA pays a visit to the University of Sussex
The Labs team has a great Student Outreach channel that offers guest lectures and talks from industry professionals and Mozilla staff. The University of Sussex just took advantage of the program, inviting David Burns from WebQA. David showed students how Mozilla goes about testing all its web properties. You can see the presentation here and find out how you can take advantage of the program.

Happy and Snappy
Congrats to community member Koen Hendrix for creating the winning design for the Mozilla Creative Collective Firefox 4 t-shirt Challenge. Tara Shahian interviews Koen to learn more about his inspiration, how he got involved with design and came to participate in the challenge. Check out the Q&A, as well as his design – there’s a persona too!
