When you click the View All button on an author’s profile page, you will see all the themes the author created, and also sort them by Up & Coming, Recently Added, Most Popular, and Top Rated. Previously, these sorting options were available only in category sections and not for specific authors.

The move from getpersonas.com to addons.mozilla.org (AMO) is complete. If you have new themes piling up over the past two weeks, we have good news—you can submit them now! As one of the first to check out the results of the migration, please let us know in our forums if you run into any issues. We’re aware that there are still some kinks to work out, so please bear with us!

If you had a getpersonas account only, or had both getpersonas and AMO accounts and made sure your email addresses matched prior to the migration, you should be able to log in using the same credentials.

On your profile page, you will see any themes you designed previously under “Themes I’ve Created”. On the detail page of a theme you created, you will see an Edit button that will take you to a page with your editing options. You can also go to the Manage My Add-ons page to see a list of themes (and add-ons) you’ve created, along with helpful links to manage them.

To see your Favorites collection, click on My Favorites from the menu at the top.

If you are using the Personas Plus add-on, we’ve updated it to work with AMO; however, due to resource constraints we kept only the most popular features (e.g. local themes and rotating themes), and dropped some of the browsing features. If you are using Personas Rotator, please note that it will not work until the developer has updated it for AMO.

If you’re new to themes and would like to try your hand at creating some, take a look at the tutorial!

Have fun!

** 3/26/13 UPDATE ** The final stage of migration will begin Thursday, Mar 28 at 2pm PDT. At this time, getpersonas.com will go into read-only mode, which means it will not accept any new registrations, logins, or theme submissions. We expect this process to last up to two weeks. After migration is complete, you will be able to submit new themes on addons.mozilla.org.

—
We are making progress on the migration of getpersonas.com to addons.mozilla.org (AMO), and we wanted to give you an update! As many of you know, getpersonas.com was the original home for background themes, and was created as part of a Mozilla Labs experiment. The site became strained as a result of its success, and a move to the add-ons (and Marketplace) ecosystem is necessary to ensure it continues to thrive.

Background themes on AMO already enjoy features such as ratings and reviews, and support for over 30 languages. When the migration is complete, we’ll also have a brand-new submission page, artist profile page, and a vastly improved reviewer tool. (See below for screen shots).

We are aiming to complete the migration within the next three months. If you are a getpersonas.com user, you will receive an email containing more details in the coming weeks.

What it means for you as a getpersonas.com user

If you have an AMO account using the same email address

After the migration, log in to addons.mozilla.org using your AMO credentials. Your favorites from getpersonas.com will appear in your My Favorites collection, and any themes you have created will appear on your profile page.

If you don’t have an AMO account

After the migration, log in to addons.mozilla.org using your getpersonas.com credentials. Your favorites from getpersonas.com will appear in your My Favorites collection, and themes you have created will appear on your profile page.

If you have accounts on both sites, and log in using different email addresses

We won’t be able to automatically match accounts that have different email addresses. This means you will continue logging in to addons.mozilla.org using your AMO credentials to access your AMO content (e.g. add-ons you’ve created and your add-on collections), and log in using your getpersonas.com credentials to access your getpersonas.com content (e.g. themes you’ve created and your favorite themes).

If you’d like your content consolidated automatically (scenario #1), please change your email address on one of these sites ASAP, so they match.

If you don’t change your email address to match by the time the migration is complete, no worries—you can still transfer ownership of themes between accounts afterwards.

Last but not least, previews!

I post these updates every 3 weeks to inform add-on developers about the status of the review queues, add-on compatibility, and other happenings in the add-ons world.

In case you missed it, give 2012 in Add-on Reviews a look. It’s a good overview of what the review team did last year and how it compares to previous years.

The Review Queues

Most nominations for full review are taking less than 3 weeks to review.

Most updates are being reviewed within 2 weeks.

Most preliminary reviews are being reviewed within 2 weeks.

These stats are taken from the last queue report:

95 nominations in the queue awaiting review.

103 updates in the queue awaiting review.

101 preliminary review submissions in the queue awaiting review.

Our new reviewer incentives program has become a great motivator for our review team. If you’re an add-on developer, please consider joining us. Add-on reviewers get invited to Mozilla events and earn cool gear with their work. Visit our wiki page for more information.

Firefox 18 Compatibility

The compatibility blog post for Firefox 18 is available here. The compatibility bump was run shortly before release.

The Firefox 19 blog post and bump should come soon.

Merging Themes

We finally merged Background Themes (previously known as Personas) and Complete Themes (previously known as Themes) into a single themes category on AMO. However, we made some mistakes with the initial design that made Complete Themes less visible than we intended to, which are being worked on right now. We hope to have a more balanced Themes section in the coming weeks.

In order to accommodate various screen resolutions and header heights, themes (formerly Personas) require very large image files. Header images need to be 3000 x 200 px and footer images 3000 x 100 px. As a result, loading them slows down Firefox. Animated themes pose an even more persistent problem for performance, because animated images are much larger in size, and the browser needs to redraw them continuously.

Bug 650968 was filed to address this issue, and the solution was to crop the images to your screen size when you start Firefox. Because smaller images are loaded when the browser starts, load times are much improved. However, a side-effect of the cropping is that animated images are not taken into account. For this reason, animated themes will no longer animate starting in Firefox 18. Since this was a unintended consequence, there are some edge cases where the image will animate normally until Firefox is restarted.

We understand that animated themes are very popular with some users, and people will be upset with this difficult decision. However, to keep Firefox performing optimally for the even greater number of users who care about speed, the decision was necessary. We would love to find a way to preserve animated themes, and are currently looking into alternative solutions. In the meantime, a workaround would be to install the Personas Shuffler, which will refresh your animated themes every time Firefox loads, keeping them animating continuously.

There are still many beautiful and creative themes available to personalize your Firefox, with more added every day, and we hope you continue to enjoy them.

2/28/13 Update on the Getpersonas.com migration »

Early last month, we asked for your help in choosing a new name for the Personas feature in Firefox. We’ve found that most users, even those who use Personas, don’t know them by that name, and new users can’t tell what a “Persona” is by its name.

After a lot of thought, including consideration of the community poll results, we’re planning to make “themes” the name for custom visual changes to Firefox, whether through Personas or existing themes. We think it’s easiest for a user trying to change Firefox’s look to go to a single place without worrying about the difference between a “theme”, a “background”, and a “skin”.

For people who do know the difference and only wish to browse one type of theme, we’ll distinguish “background themes” (current Personas) from “complete themes” (current themes).

We know that current theme designers put many hours of work into their styles to totally transform every aspect of the Firefox UI, and hope that a single themes area featuring both themes and Personas will help more users discover complete themes who otherwise wouldn’t.

As many of you know, we’ve been in the process of migrating the Personas website into addons.mozilla.org with all of our other add-ons, and we plan to finish that process in the coming months. When Personas have finished the migration to their new home, they’ll be called themes. Until then, our websites will continue to refer to them as Personas or Persona themes.

In case you’re curious, out of more than 1,000 responses to our naming poll, “themes” came in second place with 22% of the votes behind “skins” with 41% of the votes. We considered “skins”, but it drew many negative reactions and associations, and we ultimately felt it’s less confusing to users if we unify all of our themes under a single name.

As for the future of the name “Personas”, we mentioned earlier the possibility that it might be better suited for another product. We did find this to be the case, and last week we announced that Mozilla Persona will become the new name for our Web-scale identity system (formerly called BrowserID). You can read more about the product and the reasoning behind this decision here.

Firefox users love Personas. They’re a fun and easy way to customize Firefox and make it your own. But in talking with new users, we’ve learned that they are often confused by the name and don’t quite get that Personas are just another way to theme your browser. And more often than not, when a… Continue reading

Firefox users love Personas. They’re a fun and easy way to customize Firefox and make it your own. But in talking with new users, we’ve learned that they are often confused by the name and don’t quite get that Personas are just another way to theme your browser. And more often than not, when a Firefox user describes the look of their browser, they use words like “wallpapers” or “backgrounds” instead of the proper name Personas.

We’ve heard questions from many users over the years as to why we kept the Personas name, and even ran tests that showed users are more likely to try out Personas when called by a different name. “Persona” is a good name, but is probably better suited for a different product in the future.

So, we’d like to rename Personas to something more understandable and localizable. And we’d love your help.

We’ve come up with several options for a new name and want to know what you think. Please take a look at the poll below and submit your vote by Wednesday, February 8. Your choice will play a big role in which name we choose, as well as other factors including the word’s meaning in other cultures and languages.

We expect this transition to take place over the coming weeks. Thanks for your help, and please let us know if you have any questions or comments.

VOTE NOW
