0.5 release – status update (June 5)

Hi everyone,
first of all thanks for staying with us and for testing the 0.5 RC1 release builds. As these have been out for nearly a week, I wanted to give you an update on our plans regarding the 0.5 release.

First of all, the feedback has been really good. I think everyone will agree that 0.5 will be so much better than 0.3 and 0.3.1, even though probably not all your favourite bugs could be fixed in time.

But there have been some issues that prevent us from making the RC1 our real 0.5 release. These issues are:

  • Bug 375873:
Bugfixes and corrections in many of our supported localizations
  • Bug 382840:
Alarms in ics files don’t fire when scheduled – but do fire after editing
  • Bug 383124:
Bump version number for lightning-wcap to 0.5
  • Bug 383163:
Missing file sun-lightning.dtd in localized lightning.xpi
  • Bug 383263:
    Wrong install.rdf in lightning-wcap.xpi and wcap-enabler.xpi – not installable on Linux/Mac

All these issues taken together make a 2nd release candidate (RC2) necessary. We hope to prepare it soon, since all those bugs either have patches or can be easily fixed during the release preparation process.

After Lightning & Sunbird 0.5 RC2 is released, we hope that after a few more days of testing, this will become the final 0.5 release.

  1. Can you please add Bug 367159 to that list? It is the lightning equivalent to a bug that was a blocker for 0.5 in Sunbird and without it being fixed makes lightning on the mac fairly unusable.

  2. Jon,
bug 367159 will not be fixed for 0.5, because that would involve a change in core-code on a stable branch affecting Thunderbird and such changes are only allowed for security- and crash-bugs on a stable branch.
Sorry, but there is nothing we can do about this.

  3. Very disappointed, but understandable. Now that the nightly builds are universal perhaps I’ll just keep an eye on the bug and grab the nightly.

  4. is there any particular reason, why in lightning (i guess it’s the same in sunbird) there are no week numbers in the lines of the month view? i remember that there were such numbers in an early sunbird release…
anyway – great work guys!! thanx a lot for making thunderbird roaring even more!

  5. Great work! I have been using 0.5 a bit (I don’t use Calendars a lot) and it looks good so far! At least I haven’t noticed any drawback from 0.3.1 (if I do I’l revert to it :P) and I’m waiting for those RC2s
    Once again … GREAT WORK

  6. Hi at all.
One question: why in lightning it is a combobox that reproduce the calendar which is displayed above?
    See this

    Ciao and good work.

  7. Is Sunbird 0.5 RC1 on the same update line as RC2? Meaning: are we going to be able to update from within the application? Thanks (thumbup)

  8. Sunbird is working fine for me, but Lightning isn’t showing scheduled tasks or events on the calendar at all.
Is this happening to anyone else?

  9. Julo,
we will probably not activate the update channel for the upgrade from Rc1 to RC2.
    crimsondryad,
are you using Linux? If yes, are you using a Thunderbrid build from your distro or a Thunderbird build from mozilla.org? Lightning will most likely not run with distro-packaged Thunderbird builds because of toolchain issues at these vendors.

  10. @Icaro : looking here may help you to spare some space : http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=537171

  11. Thanks Olivier.
I have add this code in my userchrome.css
    #ltnDateTextPickerBox {
    display: none !important;
    }
    and now it is right!
    Ciao

  12. Nope, using WinXP SP2. Here are the extensions I have installed, maybe one is conflicting?
    Asertiva Extension for Sugar 0.9.0.3
    Contacts Sidebar 0.7
    Folderpane Tools 0.0.5.1
    MessageFaces 1.1.2
    Remember Mismatched domains 1.4.1
    ReminderFox 1.3
    Sender Verification 0.8.2.1
    Skype Toolbar 1.0.0.54
    View Headers Toggle Button 2.0.1
These extensions are installed but disabled (not compatible with this version).
    Quicknote 0.6.0.2
    SyncOnArrival 1.3
    Talkback 2.0.0.0
I did notice that I still had the Calendar +3.01a extension installed, I uninstalled it. Thinking maybe I will have to uninstall the new Lightning and try reinstalling?
    I’m open to suggestions.

  13. Update:
I uninstalled the 3.01a extension and uninstalled the new .5 release. Then I reinstalled .5 with the same result.
If I right click a day and add an event, nothing shows up. If I click the top menu to add an event, it’s not showing up on the calendar.
I checked all the views, it’s like it’s not there.

  14. crimsondryad,
please try to disable or uninstall the other extensions and see if that fixes it. It might be that some binding names or IDs conflicts exist between Lightning and one of your extensions.
If disabling/uninstalling the extensions fixes this, it would be great if you find out, which extension conflicts with Lightning, so that we can try to avoid this conflict in the future.

  15. I really enjoy using Lightning and have had no noticeable problems with either 0.3.1 or 0.5.
I would like to make one request. Please provide an option to turn OFF the small calendar. I already have one on my desktop and for me it is more in the way, than helpful. There are already several ways to move around in the calendar, I don’t need the small calendar visible.
Plus it would give more room for the email folder list and agenda, todo lists, which I would prefer to see more of.

  16. As an addition to the previous post. The drop down calendar in the folder pane is a great idea as well. Maybe with a “Today” button beside it.
With this option it could easily replace the small calendar display and would free up a lot more room in the folder pane.
Provide an option to disable the calender image, so the side pane has the email folder list on top, then the drop down calendar, then the agenda/todo lists.
This would look great and be easy to work with.

  17. To follow up on the previous posts too, I’d like the mini calendar to have the option to show e.g. two months ahead (collumnwise). This would be really handy, especially if the end of the month is approaching. It would be fantastic, of course, if I could use it to ctrl-select multiple days that would then be displayed in the main window… :-)

  18. Or… if you hover over the mini-calendar, that you would see some sort of preview of your appointments for that day :-))

  19. I would like to see multi-day appointments to display as unique item across cols [a la Google Calendar] instead of one item per day.
This is the way that the project’ wiki shows as UI target.

  20. BUG REPORT:
A task with a date does not disappear after marked as completed.
I created a task with the date of 5/11/07 as a reminder of when an order was placed.
The product arrived and I marked the task as completed with the date 6/7/07. The task itself is marked as completed and is hidden in the Task list. However, it is still showing up everyday in the Agenda.
Shouldn’t this disappear from the Agenda after it is marked as completed?

  21. Richard,
bug reports here in the blog are of no use to the developers. Please post bug reports in bugzilla.mozilla.org where they belong. And please search for duplicates first.

  22. Would it be possible to make RC2 version instalable on 64bit linux? I using opensuse 10.2, with thunderbird 1.5.0.12 and when installing lightning 0.5RC1, I’m getting error “not compatible with Linux-x86_64-gcc3”. In the same version of thunderbird, I’m using for example Calendar-0.2 plugin.

  23. Subscribing to a remote calendar under file menu seems to create a new calendar instead of connecting to an existing one. Is this a known issue?

Please, do work the extension with Seamonkey.
Thank you very much for his attention and sorry for my bad english.

  25. It has been over a week – any progress on RC2?

  26. Sorry for the delay. I’ve tried disabling all my extensions and adding an event, it still doesn’t show on the calendar, though it does appear they are being saved.
Suggestions on what to try/do next?

  27. Another update. I set a couple of test events with alarms. The alarm went off for the event and showed the correct event details, though the event does not show up on daily, weekly, or monthly views.

  28. rc2 is out, but not as en-US?

  29. can we get a status update, please ?
is there a new roadmap to 0.7 ?
    anything new ?

  30. My Sunbird is on pension, it needs to be replaced with 0.5 ASAP.

  31. Ok…feeling just a bit stupid. I figured out why I couldn’t see events. Some time ago I had moved my message bar down to take up the whole space because I wasn’t using Lightning.
When I installed the latest version I was a little confused as to why I wasn’t seeing the mini-calendar. So now that I made it display, I figured out that I had to select the calendar I wanted to display.
    Duh me. :)
