Notices / Schedule

Firefox 4 Beta

Firefox 3.6.9 & 3.5.12

Firefox 3.6.10 & 3.5.13

  • Draft schedule will be released this week
  • We have already been marking bugs as blocking and approving nominated patches

Blocker Report

Firefox 4 Beta

Firefox 3.6.10

Firefox 3.5.13

Firefox Development

(from our goals):

  • [NEW] Feature complete Firefox 4
    • [DONE] Switch to Tab
    • [ON TRACK] Extension Manager – Bug list is converging, still a lot of work to do.
    • [ON TRACK] Notification UI – Geo and EM notifications done, http auth next.
    • [ON TRACK] New Theme – Windows and Mac good, Linux lagging.
    • [ON TRACK] App Tabs – Scope for 4.0 reduced (non-global), near feature complete.
    • [ON TRACK] TabCandy – Sorting out session restore behaviour, near feature complete.
    • [AT RISK] Silent updates on Windows
    • [AT RISK] Inspector
    • [AT RISK] Web Console
    • [DROPPED] Account Manager – WIP patches posted, but we can’t contain the review load and code risk.

Platform

(there is a team-by-team goals breakdown, as well)

  • [ON TRACK] Javascript performance near or even with Chrome 5 on their benchmarks (within 20% on SS, 30% on V8), with substantial wins on our benchmarks. (Windows, in-browser.)
  • [ON TRACK] Hardware acceleration of video and other HTML and SVG content, as well as user interface, on by default for compatible hardware on all Tier-1 desktop and mobile platforms.
  • [ON TRACK] Fully support the WebGL 1.0 spec, with support turned on by default in a Firefox 4 beta on platforms that support OpenGL or OpenGL ES.
  • [ON TRACK] security: zero reproducible high/crit > 30 days
  • [ON TRACK] Support multi-process Fennec.
  • [ON TRACK] Support Jetpacks running in separate processes and never blocking the Fennec UI.

JS

GFX

  • Beta 5 is good to go with Direct2D hardware accelerated rendering.
  • This week, we will be turning on Direct3D hardware accelerated compositing of layers on all Windows platforms.
  • You can test hardware accelerated compositing of layers by setting the pref layers.accelerate-all. However, there are some (huge) known issues on OS X, so we suggest you not turn it on for OS X quite yet.
    • If you run into trouble, run Firefox in safe mode – hardware acceleration is disabled in safe mode.

Layout

  • bug 130078 landed
    • Some regressions; biggest issue is screen readers being mostly broken on Windows due to sniffing of our HWND hierarchy (bug 591874)
    • Known Tp regressions on some platforms because paint suppression in loading documents is effectively disabled; patches in bug 591435 will turn those regressions into wins

Content

  • Remote XUL and XBL now disabled, landed for beta5 (sicking)

Tree Management

  • Try What You Want
    • The TryChooser is running in production now which allows you to select the specific try builds/test/talos runs you want (as well as which platforms) in your hg commit comment. Please see documentation and give it a go! This new feature gives devs more self-serve tools, and with more people using it will save on builder cycles thus reducing try wait times.
    • If you want a test/talos suite(s) (re)triggered, please use this handy template for bugzilla with much information already entered for you

Roundtable

  • bug 533038 will stop unpacking extension XPIs by default in beta6.

SeaMonkey Meeting Details

Agenda

  • Who’s taking minutes? -> Ratty

Action Items

(who needs to do what that hasn’t been recorded in a bug) We should assign people to the open items.

NEW

OPEN

CLOSED

K.I.V.

  • Get permission from Google to use their geolocation JSON service [KaiRo]. We can still only wait on the Google front right now. Didn’t hear anything about open Geolocation service yet. No easy solution in sight.

SeaMonkey 2.0.7

open blockers (0)
blocker requests (1)
fixed (15)

  • Based on Gecko 1.9.1.12, target dates TBD, see Releases.
  • Release schedule will be synchronized with the next Firefox 3.5 release (3.5.12).
  • The mailnews.messageid_browser.url has changed. The l10n newsgroup has been informed, and follow-up bugs filed.

SeaMonkey 2.1 Alpha 3

open blockers (1)
blocker requests (4)
targeted (1)
fixed (60)

  • Has been FROZEN for two weeks now, build 2 is available from FTP, please help testing the Windows updates, so we can release it.
  • Release notes, the announcement, and other documentation are still missing. Help wanted.
  • if that all that falls into place, we could push it out today.
    • Aqualon tested the autoupdate from 2.1a2 to 2.1a3 on a Windows 2008 server with a clean profile, and it worked without problems.
  • InvisibleSmiley will make a SeaMonkey Trunk Tracker blog post later today.

SeaMonkey 2.1 Beta 1

open blockers (2)
blocker requests (3)
targeted (1)
fixed (11)

  • Will probably be only beta, targeted freeze for end of September. This roughly matches Gecko 2.0 RC1. After that, we’ll see where Gecko is and where we are and if it really looks good for the final stretch to 2.1.

(Further 2.1 scheduling:)

  • Please help updating the New 2.1 Features page as we go.
    • Has been updated by InvisibleSmiley. But we will need to add the platform changes for a3 as well.
  • Plans for 2.1: 6-8 weeks per milestone, b1 in October, and a final in November.
  • This seems to match recently presented Firefox 4 plans relatively well – they’re in beta now, RC1 is planned for October and Final somewhere “soon” after.
  • It would be good to get OOPP (Out Of Process Plugins) for SM2.1 (bug 545716) but we need some way to build libxul (bug 394502) to be able to build OOPP. LDAP work has to be done for that to be possible, the rest should at least build with libxul right now.

Feature List, Planning

Bug statistics for last two (full) weeks: 72 new, 41 fixed, 21 triaged.

  • Fix rate is quite good, triage rate rather low. New bugs are to a large part reported from our own team for tracking upcoming or future work and test failures.
  • Good further triage targets could come out of looking at the component bug counts, pick yours!

Major wanted/needed features:

2.1

Needing help, Unowned, Stalled
  • bug 460953 kill-rdf port.
  • bug 436794 Enable Mac OS X system address book per default and add UI.
    • SM UI needed, unowned, helpwanted.
  • bug 410613 OpenSearch.
    • The current consensus it to get some basic functionality going with OpenSearch first. And then later to see how much of the old functionality we can reimplement in follow-ups.
  • bug 449728 Drag tabs between windows.
  • bug 477845 Build a standalone (Gecko 2.0) Composer. [kaze]
    • kaze is currently job hunting so doesn’t have much time to spend on this.
    • bug 477840 Backport KompoZer to Composer (Depends on bug 477845).
    • kaze has done a ton of work there. We still need to work out some organizational issues. At the moment there is no active interest from MoMo for bringing standalone composer into comm-central. That’s something we (KaiRo and kaze) will have to negotiate with the Thunderbird team (dmose).
  • bug 523274 Complete new default theme icon set.
  • bug 526210 Update the icon set for the SeaMonkey Modern Theme.
    • Some proposed icons got posted, we should take a look how to get that contribution into the product.
    • The rest is unowned so far.
  • bug 576970 Port Sync 1.4 UI to SeaMonkey trunk.
  • bug 507841 Port Bug 422814 – Make account configuration quick, easy, and more secure (autoconfig, Quick Account Setup).
  • bug 573391 Detect outdated plugins and notify users.
  • bug 573538 No options for Safe-Mode.
Active
  • bug 533908 SeaMonkey Mail: tabs not restored [misak].
    • status/progress?
  • bug 569341 Data Manager [KaiRo]
    • KaiRo updated the code for review comments, followed by yet another round of comments coming in. Welcome to the never-ending cycle of Neil’s comments. The add-on version up on AMO is 1.0.1 with a lot of fixes from the SeaMonkey work.
  • bug 467867 [META] Implement Firefox TabBrowser API in Seamonkey [misak].
    • Misak has ported major items. Follow up bugs and patches have either landed or are in process.
    • In progress: bug 586340 Port bug 562649 set and correctly handle userTypedValue when loading external URIs. TODO: Port bug 570981 Remove URLBarSetURI’s aValid parameter.
  • bug 566138 Better integration with Windows 7 taskbar.
    • bug 581526 Add SeaMonkey support for the Windows 7 jump list [mcsmurf].
    • status/progress?

We also should take a look at the other items on 2.1-wanted
Also the nominations need triaging.

  • We will need to take a close look at Lightning, which is mainly targeting Thunderbird.
    • Lightning 1.0 beta 1 is for SM2.0 and TB3.0, 1.0 beta 2 is for TB3.1 (Gecko 1.9.2), 1.0 beta 2 will probably be Gecko 2.0-based.

Trunk Development

  • 3.0.7 and 3.1.3 will likely happen today.
Major updates to 3.1
  • Prompted major updates to TB 3.1.2.
    • 3.0.6 users are now being prompted (probably about 300k transitioned so far).
    • Initial 2.0.0.24 -> 3.1.2 push planned for today August.

QA Updates

Marketing Updates

  • Press update: Quiet week. A few articles: 1,2

    • Funnelcake 2 builds
  • Web
    • ISBDB web work in progress (Sancus)

Documentation

Support

  1. GS Cloud or CDN issues on the weekend, updates were invisible on the website to some folks, visible to others, will follow up
  2. # of support issues on GS is up 24% from last week, generally higher even before major update 2->3.1 switched on, no major update GS spike, yet!
  3. 3.1 Support Issues – TB2->3.1 User confusion with autoconfig “Manual Setup…” button: It is NOT the full manual setup users expect; it actually means “create an account with the currently displayed settings including POP or IMAP and edit it manually afterwards” (since the account is created you can’t change POP to IMAP or vice versa) as opposed to an account creation screen where you can choose POP or IMAP and then create the account manually! SuMoMo IMAP to POP article is unclear so will modify as well as do a screencast.
  4. SuMoMo – Thomas Lendo (thanks) translated localization dashboard to German – need to verify it’s correct but it looks good
  5. See this week’s Support Appendix for full Get Satisfaction metrics and other support details –

Lightning Updates

  • Build Symbols for 1.0b2 mac/win32 release have been uploaded. For future crashes, we might have more info on what part of calendar is misbehaving
  • In light of that, we seem to have a load of windows crashes, need to investigate
  • Our new 1.0b3 blocker list is up, not much change from what was proposed.

Status updates

See the Mozilla Status Board for status updates specific to developers.

  • Direct3D 9 accelerated layers are going to be turned on for mozilla-central very soon, but our current plan is to leave it turned off for beta 5, to give us extra nightly coverage.

    • 42 new IX machines (non-virtualized build slaves, quad-core w/ 4GB RAM) arriving this week. Should be online middle of next week. Will be split among regular build and try build pools, mix of win32, linux, and linux64 builds.
    • Hoping to land bug 473184 (ability to select try server platforms and tests) tomorrow or Thursday.
  • Compare your tryserver push Talos results today using this tool!

Roundtable

  • proposed schedule changes [beltzner]
    • freeze for beta5 this Friday
    • move feature-freeze to beta6, target freeze Sept 10
    • aim to land JM on mozilla-central on target (Sept 1) and bake there

      • priorities remain: performance (for all reasons!), compelling UX to drive upgrades, jetpack to reduce cost of future application updates
