  • Fine graining numbers coming up (ie os etc e.g. 11% users on Mac OS X and 33% on Windows XP).
  • Germany seems to retain more.
  • Q what numbers can we compare to ?
    • previous Funnels
    • Firefox
    • Rafael to try to find some numbers out.

Thunderbird Development

For more details, see also the driver meeting notes.

Feature Work

  • Contracts almost done.

  • Should be ready to release by next Tuesday.

Pluggable Mail Stores (bug 402392):

  • two test failings

Experiments

  • Thunderbird Conversations slated for release on 2010/12/07, with blog post on mozilla labs, screencast, updated AMO page, lotta screenshots, twitter announcement (please retweet), and the whole shebang.
    • Expecting a lot of feedback!
    •  :protz currently slightly busy now, will continue bugfixes and improvements, for future alpha releases in sync with Thunderbird 3.3 alpha releases (gallery view, bugfixes, improved quick reply…).
  • Updates for Mailing List Manager, Contacts on deck.
  • Sync Add-on further out.

Trunk (Miramar) Development

  • Active branches.
  • Next Alpha: Early January.
  • Help on fixing blockers would be very useful and appreciated, see this list of higher priority bugs.
  • blocking criteria :
    • Alpha 1 -> Serious usability issues.
    • After -> not real criteria, regression/usability issues as usual.

3.2

  • Decision on if/when we’ll do 3.2 on hold until we progress account provisioning further.

Thunderbird Stability & Security Releases

  • Doing a quick respin (build 3) to fix a regression that affects Theme add-ons.

  • 3.0.11 is the last release fro the 3.0.x branch

    • Had a few more ideas of workshops
      1. How to use bugzilla ?
      2. How to gather stack traces and log files
      3. Getting started with mozmill
  • The change from announced weekly event, 1 day in the week to more loosy 1 event per week didn’t really work out – we will go back to one day event per week – need to communicate that and get it rolling.
  • Should probably advertize extensions a bit more with what to test etc …

  3. Congrats to Firefox launching Kitsune KB last week.
    • Plan to switch SuMoMo to Kitsune KB in 1Q or 2Q2011.
    • Wiki page and tracker bug coming soon!
  4. Investigating Web Trends analytics for SuMoMo (not as detailed as Google Analytics on first glance e.g. missing country by country analytics)
  5. about:support addon is now at 0.40 with condensed plain text output – Thunderbird support contributors: please give it a try. Thanks to sid0 for excellent work and code!
  6. See this week’s Support Appendix for full Get Satisfaction metrics and other support details

Content

  • Major remainders from compartment landing fixed (beta8 blockers). Many thanks to mrbkap and gal.

Tree Management

  • Fallout from our fun last week hunting down new orange caused by zombo.com DNS:
    • Friendly reminder that the RelEng Sheriff can re-trigger tests or even builds of specific changesets for you.
    • Cutting off external network access to test machines. See dev.tree-management thread here
  • IT needs to rearrange test minis in the new colo. Proposed dates are December 17th, December 23rd. This will require a full working day with little or no test coverage. bug 616658
  • Win7 debug unit tests enabled
    • last known perma-orange for xpcshell – bug 610654
    • who can make xpcshell run faster on Win7? [1] It runs pretty slow. The other test suites did not get affected (except reftest a little bit)
      • xpcshell takes quite long on win7 and increases the end-to-end times
      • shall we keep on running xpcshell only on win2k3? shall we proceed with the switch? who can take ownership of making xpcshell faster on Windows 7?
      • we would like to stop running unit tests on win2k3 a couple of days after the last perma-orange on win7 gets fixed but this depends on answering the previous question.

Roundtable

  • Pulling WebSockets for Firefox 4 due to a security problem with proxy upgrade negotiation. (inherent problem with standard, spec in flux)
  • String freeze: [blocking with strings] has 10 bugs, 6 prelanded strings, 4 new strings. I’m losing track, bug 616015 and bug 616014 were filed without/wrong whiteboard and blocking+. (Axel) [blocker noms with strings]
    • file bugs with [strings] in the whiteboard, request blocking, and CC :Pike. Johnath is to triage those.
  • Blocker re-triage next week.
  • Branching for Fennec4.0b3, Firefox4.0b8, and what branches to use so that post beta3/beta8 fixes can land, to be revisited later this week. (discussion in meeting with legneato, stuart, joduinn, catlee).

  • schedule and progress on upcoming releases
  • review highlights and notices
  • respond to questions and concerns

Action Items

Schedule & Progress on Upcoming Releases

Firefox 4 (Desktop)

Firefox 4 (Mobile)

Firefox 3.6/3.5

  • Released build #2 of 3.6.13 and 3.5.16 today to beta audience, with a fix for bug 614565
  • Still plan to release on December 9th
  • Draft schedule for 3.6.14 and 3.5.17 will come next week

Add-on Builder 1.0a7

  • Shipped Add-on Builder on new AMO infra (yay! – completed AMO goal in the process)
  • New staging and unit test framework now active.
  • 1.0a7 is under development and on track
  • Started initial thinking on which release should qualify as beta, best case looking like 1.0a8 – likely will contain the Skywriter/Cloud9 merge.

Input 2.1

  • Release Date: 12/9
  • Features: Suggestions, Siphon by Device Types (for mobile), Better search on past releases
  • Starting development work on 3.0 and targeting code freeze for end of December (with release in early January).

Jetpack SDK 0.10

  • blockers resolved
  • Add-on SDK 1.0b1 RC1 today
  • Add-on SDK 1.0b1 final Monday, December 6?
  • 1.0b1 is not a feature-complete beta, as we intend to enhance existing APIs and add new APIs in future beta releases
  • but it is a feature-stable beta, which means that we don’t expect to make any breaking changes to the existing APIs in subsequent betas
  • and the bar for making such changes will be very high (i.e. we’ll have to have a very good reason to break any APIs we ship in 1.0b1)

Highlights / Notices

  • Weekly Feedback Report
    • Same issues as last week, but in general, less complaints (probably due to thanksgiving?).

SeaMonkey Meeting Details

Agenda

  • Who’s taking minutes? -> Ratty

Action Items

(who needs to do what that hasn’t been recorded in a bug) We should assign people to the open items.

NEW

OPEN

CLOSED

K.I.V.

  • Get permission from Google to use their geolocation JSON service [KaiRo]. We can still only wait on the Google front right now. Didn’t hear anything about open Geolocation service yet. No easy solution in sight.

SeaMonkey 2.0.11

open blockers (1)
blocker requests (0)
fixed (32)

SeaMonkey 2.0.12

open blockers (0)
blocker requests (0)
fixed (0)

  • Based on Gecko 1.9.1.17, target date TDB, see Releases, in sync with Firefox 3.5.17.

SeaMonkey 2.1 Beta 2

open blockers (1)
blocker requests (3)
targeted (1)
fixed (57)

(Further 2.1 scheduling:)

  • Please help updating the New 2.1 Features page as we go.
  • Plans for 2.1: 6-8 weeks per milestone, b2 (feature freeze) probably in early December; final to be decided later.
    • We’ll probably close for the beta2 once SyncUI has landed.
  • Unsure how this fits Firefox 4 plans as they are still trying to get to their feature freeze.
  • Firefox 4 now officially being in early 2011, which gives us a bit more time.
    • As Firefox is now going RC in January, it makes sense to do a short-cycle b3 and try to match it with FF4RC. We can then make make b3 the final feature and string freeze, to be followed by 2.1pre.
  • Beta 1 on PPC is broken.
    • We have stopped PPC builds.
    • We have converted our Mac boxes to 64bit switched Mac trunk to Intel 32/64bit universal builds.

Feature List, Planning

Bug statistics for last two (full) weeks: 38 new, 20 fixed, 22 triaged.

  • Fix rate is dropping, probably not too many reviews happening. Can we improve?
  • Good further triage targets could come out of looking at the component bug counts, pick yours!
  • Proposed SeaMonkey Triage Week
    • We have categories at SeaMonkey:Triage_Week#Categories we want to look at, together with the dates that are hopefully ok.
    • We’ve decided to use the existing #seamonkey channel instead of creating a special purpose triage channel as this is a pretty quiet channel and the regulars are already here.
    • InvisibleSmiley will create a wikipage with instructions for people wanting to help who are not familiar with triaging.
      • The General Information page will contain the UNCO/NEW bug searches that are already on the Categories page.
    • InvisibleSmiley suggested to concentrate first on the UNCO bugs and then on the NEW bugs.

Open reviews/flags: 45 review 18 super-review 1 ui-review 4 feedback

Major wanted/needed features:

2.1

Needing help, Unowned, Stalled
  • bug 460953 kill-rdf port.
  • bug 436794 Enable Mac OS X system address book per default and add UI.
    • SM UI needed, unowned, helpwanted.
  • bug 449728 Drag tabs between windows.
  • bug 477845 Build a standalone (Gecko 2.0) Composer. [kaze]
    • kaze is currently job hunting so doesn’t have much time to spend on this.
    • bug 477840 Backport KompoZer to Composer (Depends on bug 477845).
    • kaze has done a ton of work there. We still need to work out some organizational issues. At the moment there is no active interest from MoMo for bringing standalone composer into comm-central. That’s something we (KaiRo and kaze) will have to negotiate with the Thunderbird team (dmose).
  • bug 523274 Complete new default theme icon set.
  • bug 526210 Update the icon set for the SeaMonkey Modern Theme.
    • Some proposed icons got posted, we should take a look how to get that contribution into the product.
    • The rest is unowned so far.
  • bug 507841 Port Bug 422814 – Make account configuration quick, easy, and more secure (autoconfig, Quick Account Setup).
  • bug 573538 No options for Safe-Mode.
  • bug 521159 [SeaMonkey 2.1] Port |bug 514327 Detect outdated plugins and offer upgrade path|
  • bug 87098 [SeaMonkey] Delete key should delete location bar history list entry
  • bug 588067 Switch SeaMonkey to use omnijar for nightly/release builds
  • bug 401417 Add an option for a search box in SeaMonkey toolbar
Active
  • bug 533908 SeaMonkey Mail: tabs not restored [misak]
    • Has some updates on mail tab restore but depends on some mailtab work from Mnyromyr (needs tab persistence functions for our mailnews tabs).
  • bug 570004 Popup/”doorhanger” notifications [Neil]
    • Implementation moved to bug 595810.
    • waiting for two reviews.
  • bug 566138 Better integration with Windows 7 taskbar
    • No real progress.
  • bug 576970 Port Sync UI to SeaMonkey trunk [InvisibleSmiley]
    • On hiatus since the very encouraging last review.
  • bug 484968 Make SeaMonkey tab bar scrollable to cope with tab overflow [Ratty].
    • Waiting for reviews.

We also should take a look at the other items on 2.1-wanted
Also the nominations need triaging.

  • We will need to take a close look at Lightning, which is mainly targeting Thunderbird.
    • Lightning 1.0 beta 1 is for SM2.0 and TB3.0, 1.0 beta 2 is for TB3.1 (Gecko 1.9.2), 1.0 beta 3 will be Gecko 2.0-based.

Firefox Development

(from our goals):

Firefox

  • [ON TRACK] API-Complete Jetpack
    • Joint with Jetpack team
    • Currently working towards feature-complete beta SDK
  • [ON TRACK] Stand up basic Firefox with Electrolysis

Developer Tools

  • [NEW] Ensure that Firefox 4 ships with a compatible version of Firebug
  • [NEW] Publish a roadmap for integrated developer tools in Firefox, including console, inspection, and js debugging
  • [NEW] Develop long term plan for Skywriter maintenance/support

Platform

(there is a team-by-team goals breakdown, as well)

  • [DONE] Javascript performance near or even with Chrome 5 on their benchmarks (within 20% on SS, 30% on V8), with substantial wins on our benchmarks. (Windows, in-browser.)
  • [DONE] Hardware acceleration of video and other HTML and SVG content, as well as user interface, on by default for compatible hardware on all Tier-1 desktop and mobile platforms.
  • [DONE] Fully support the WebGL 1.0 spec, with support turned on by default in a Firefox 4 beta on platforms that support OpenGL or OpenGL ES.
  • [MISSED] security: zero reproducible high/crit > 30 days
  • [DONE] Support multi-process Fennec.
  • [DONE] Support Jetpacks running in separate processes and never blocking the Fennec UI. NOTE: jetpack team hasn’t actually integrated this code yet, but it works in small test environments.

GFX

  • 123 betaN, final, and Fennec blockers
  • OpenGL composited layers on Fennec update (jrmuizel)
    • Sort of usable now, patches need to be finished before they can land though.
    • Performance work still to be done.

Layout

  • Blocker count slowly dropping, now 108
    • Many bug fixes in hand
  • Lots of editor/contenteditable fixes have landed (ehsan)
    • Google Docs features that were disabled for Firefox (spreadsheet formula syntax highlighting) will be enabled for Firefox 4

Tree Management

Roundtable

  • Infallible malloc (added to agenda by Jesse)
    • The problem, which has only recently come to light:
      • We haven’t actually made malloc infallible yet. We already made new infallible for Firefox 4, but many data structures (including arrays and strings) can still misbehave on OOM because malloc can still return NULL.
      • Many exploitable OOM bugs are in system libraries rather than Firefox itself. Replacing malloc may be the only way for us to work around all of these bugs.
      • Security researchers have been reporting many OOM bugs lately.
        • We often can’t reproduce what they see because we OOM slightly earlier or later.
        • This is a recipe for embarrassment when “old” testcases find “new” bugs, as Alex Miller discovered.
    • The plan of record:
    • Proposal:
      • Make malloc infallible
      • Fix too-large-allocation crashes (distinct from OOM), which will be obvious in crash-stats.
        • Will require exposing a fallible malloc somehow
        • May require adding methods or variants to string classes, for example.
    • We must run GC and purge caches before giving up or we will have false positive OOMs when tons of memory is not actually live.
      • Need to monitor OS memory pressure and avoid getting close to these false OOMs.
      • This was part of E10s, is it ready for Firefox 4?
    • Damon will organize a smaller meeting later today to discuss this. Email him if you want to be part of that meeting.
  • Crash Update
    • Crashes on trunk down considerably – ~5/100 active users.
    • In pretty good shape for Beta8
    • Any stability risks in remaining beta8 blockers we should be aware of?
  • Don’t forget to file bugs when you see problems in nightlies.
