Product Status Updates

Firefox 5

  • Started the Aurora channel last Wednesday to great fanfare
    • Thanks to all those who made it happen on time
  • What happens on Aurora now?
    • Fixes to security issues
    • Stability fixes
    • Backouts and preffing off
  • Aurora triage/status meetings have started
    • See this message to dev-planning for our current meeting plan
  • What do the new bugzilla flags mean? Check out this thread on dev-planning. Synopsis:
    • tracking-firefox# – bugs that need to be resolved (either by fixing, getting more information to invalidate, backing out other fixes, etc) before the next step in the release process
    • status-firefox# – tracks the state of items found after the mozilla-central → mozilla-aurora merge, as regular bug status now reflects the Firefox 6 status
    • approval-mozilla-aurora – request to land a particular patch on the mozilla-aurora repository. All patches landing on mozilla-aurora need this approved
      • Note that a bug can be approved but not tracking (for high value / low risk fixes that we won’t drive to get in)
  • The merge from Aurora to Beta happens on 2011-05-17

Firefox 4, 3.6, 3.5

  • Firefox Macaw (currently versioned as 4.0.1) went to the beta audience late Friday
  • 3.6.17 and 3.5.19 will go to beta today
    • There is a known issue with Mail.ru we will be spinning again on Wednesday for
  • Schedule for all these updates can be found on the releases wiki page

Add-on Builder 0.9.3

  • Release is on-track
    • Search phase 1 is almost landed!
    • HUGE improvements to the editor, HUGE.
  • The next release will include the stand-alone add-on repacking service that will both increase test speed in the Builder’s editor and allow for AMO to batch repack add-ons for new releases of the SDK & Firefox.

Add-on SDK 1.0b5

  • timeline:
    • Freeze: Wednesday, April 27 @ 11am PT
    • RC1: Wednesday, April 27
    • Final: Wednesday, May 4

  • focus is on polishing existing functionality in preparation for stable release

Input 3.4

  • Release Firefox Input 3.3.5 to support the new channels process
    • Band-aid to accept all feedback as happy/sad/idea across any build. Test Pilot team has updated their code and it has landed for Aurora.
    • We’re going to follow-up with weekly iterative releases that round out this approach
      • Remove the release dashboard and uplift the beta dashboard to the general one
      • Update submission forms on desktop and mobile

Feedback Summary

  • Working on a feedback strategy to support the new channels process. The plan, thus far and going forward, can be found on our central wiki

Press & Public Reactions

Questions and Concerns

  • Discuss how to communicate / track changes for our short releases. (blizzard)
  • What does the update experience feel like? (mayumi)
  • EndOfLife of 3.5/3.6? (catlee)
  • Requirement to recompile binary components in addons per release is creating a little heartburn with developers who use them. I want to ensure that promotion of JS-ctypes is the recommended approach, and need to know where devs with questions should be directed. (kev)

Actions this week

  • Christian: come back with confirmed schedules for 3.5.19, 3.6.17 and 4.0.1, as well as target date for advertised major update from 3.x to 4.0.1
  • Jay: Make sure Christian gets a bug number on slow add-on discovery pane in Asia bug 635610
    • DONE
  • Stuart/Thomas to report back next meeting with a more detailed summary of mobile’s plans for rapid release
  • Laura/Mayumi to poke metrics about getting nightly reports to include aurora stats (or get them to attend 🙂
  • Aakash/Cheng to come back with preliminary aurora feedback for next week, albeit sparse while they build a new feedback plan

  • Had a bunch of meetings.
  • Need to send out a bunch of info.
  • Also need to continue working on the new UI.

Experiments

Thunderbird Conversations

chapter in the FLOSS manual (preview)

Bugfixes, most important is newer builds now work properly when there are multiple windows open at the same time. Working on backend patches with :bienvenu and :asuth to speed things up for messages that just arrived and haven’t been downloaded yet. Should improve reactivity a lot if you received a message with attachments over IMAP and try to display it at once.

Compose in a tab

Released a snapshot version, see thread in mozilla-labs. Patch send by FredCK, should help with the blockquote issue, I still need to give it a try.

Account Summary
Ubuntu Unity Integration
  • The Messaging Menu port to JS-Ctypes is complete – a new version should be up on labs today or tomorrow.
  • I’m doing an online talk for Ubuntu App Developer week on my Unity integration work – today, 4PM EST, #ubuntu-classroom on Freenode.
    • My talk will be mainly focused on how I interface with the Unity libraries via JS-Ctypes

Miramar & Trunk Development

  • We’re going to be resyncing Miramar on to the same backend as Firefox 5.0
    • This would put our release date at late June/early July.
    • Final freezes sometime in May.
    • More information will get onto tb-planning during the week as we work out the details.
  • Help on fixing blockers would be very useful and appreciated, see this list of higher priority bugs.

Thunderbird Stability & Security Releases

  • Revised code freeze for 3.1.10 is today, should be building this week.
  • Updater fixes now landed which will hopefully resolve the update issues we’ve been seeing (with mis-matched versions).
  • SQLite upgraded to 3.7.4 which should fix a topcrash we’ve been seeing.
  • Bug Lists: 3.1

QA Updates

Marketing Updates

  • PR Update: Mozilla Messaging announcement, coverage 1, 2, 3
  • Hit 7.1MM ADUs and consistently reaching 7MM ADUs, 10% of Thunderbird users now on 2.0

Support

(If you support Thunderbird or write documentation to help support Thunderbird, please subscribe to the tb-support-crew mailing list and briefly introduce yourself to the list)

  1. 603 new support topics (my guess: higher count is due to Firefox 4 “knock-on” effect) – Media:4-10April-Community_stats_for_Mozilla_Messaging.png
  2. Kitsune KB migration: [Project Plan] Dutch, French, Polish, Spanish locales are the first locales to get most of their translations done; thanks for being Thunderbird Kitsune pioneers! Let’s try to finish those locales soon! Missing some big locales like Germany and Japan which means we may push back the launch back from April 19th
  3. 3.1 Support Issues
  4. At Mozilla All Hands, discussed the effect on TB Support if TB decides to get on the Firefox rapid release platform train (SUMO support plan for Firefox release plan; we’ll need something similar if TB goes for rapid release)
  5. See this week’s Support Appendix for full Get Satisfaction metrics and other support details

Product Status Updates

Firefox 5

  • This week we merge to aurora for the first time!
    • This means the last day to land fixes for Firefox 5 is today (2011-04-11)
      • really? Don’t we have until 4-12?
  • Extensive discussions in dev.planning, but Tuesday we take the current mozilla-central and use it to create a new mozilla-aurora, as part of our new rapid release program.
  • JP has compiled a high level overview of the new process, the decisions made and those still outstanding
  • If you have engineering questions, come to the Tuesday engineering call (11am, conf #8605)
  • If you have high level product questions, come to the Wednesday product call (11am, conf #8605)

Firefox 4, 3.6, 3.5

  • Firefox 4 Macaw, the first update to Firefox 4, is slated to ship April 26th (why use a code name?)
    • Fixes need to make it in by tomorrow, 2011-04-12!
      • Fixes land on the default branch of mozilla-central and releases/mozilla-2.0. Mobile will transplant or pull from releases/mozilla-2.0 for their update
      • If a bug is fixed on mozilla-central and hasn’t made it for Macaw we will hg transplant it tomorrow. We don’t want to do this as it adds risk…please take care of landing the fixes yourself!
    • If you have a critical fix for Macaw (the bar is high as Macaw is small and directed) not being tracked for the update, please set it to blocking2.0:? and send an email to release drivers with justification. Please note the default response will be “this can wait for Firefox 5”.
  • Firefox 3.6.17 and Firefox 3.5.19 have been pushed back a week to align with Macaw
    • We’ll be deferring outstanding blockers and only focus on security bugs fixed in Macaw (so we don’t 0day ourselves)
    • Fixes need to make it in by tomorrow, 2011-04-12!
  • The prompted update for Firefox 4 (3.5.x and 3.6.x → 4.0.1) is scheduled for 2011-05-03
    • This has to go after 3.6.17 and 3.5.19 due to bug 646054
  • Draft plan of how to end 3.5 support will be sent around this week for comments

SeaMonkey Meeting Details

Agenda

  • Who’s taking minutes? -> Ratty
  • Nominees for Friends of the Fish Tank?
    • Callek for his awesome work with Release Engineering.
    • Tonymec for bug triage and helping answer questions on the newsgroups.

Action Items

(who needs to do what that hasn’t been recorded in a bug) We should assign people to the open items.

NEW

OPEN

  • Mnyromyr to coordinate the SeaMonkey response to this years Google Summer of Code.

CLOSED

K.I.V.

  • Get permission from Google to use their geolocation JSON service [KaiRo]. We can still only wait on the Google front right now. Didn’t hear anything about open Geolocation service yet. No easy solution in sight.
    • At the “State of the Map – Europe” OpenStreetMap conference, KaiRo will try to get people to team up and create an open service.
  • MReimer’s drawing tablet broke some time back so he stopped working on theme icons. We should look into asking Mozilla’s Direct Giving Program [adriank].
    • MReimer 1) is not sure if he needs this and 2) wants to put this on hold until he gets more time to actually work more on SeaMonkey.
    • Note: Mozilla Direct Giving contact is sethb. However sethb is leaving Mozilla after FF4, no idea who will take over the Community Giving stuff then.

SeaMonkey 2.0.14

open blockers (0)
blocker requests (0)
fixed (27)

  • Based on Gecko 1.9.1.19, target April 19, see Releases, in sync with Firefox 3.5.19.

SeaMonkey 2.1 Beta 3

open blockers (0)
blocker requests (0)
targeted (0)
fixed (113)

  • Firefox 4.0 has been released.
  • Beta 3 is the final feature and string freeze for the 2.1 series.
    • As of 3rd April, Midnight PDT, SeaMonkey has been locked under string freeze.
  • Shipped Extensions: Chatzilla and Venkman are fixed and installed into the profile now.
  • beta3 will be spun on 4th April as soon as l10n signoffs are ready, and then we will go for release (candidate) also as fast as possible.
    • (InvisibleSmiley:) AFAICT b3 is almost ready to roll!.
    • We missed a step with the L10n dashboard that should have been done right after Beta 2. Unfortunately, the guy to do this is Pike and he’s off to Las Vegas until later today.
    • KaiRo plans to do the signoffs today, even if those are still marked for b2 for the moment, but we need to get ready for b3, and maybe we can kick it off without the dashboard being ready.
    • Don’t fear being aggressive with blocker triage, If it isn’t needed it doesn’t block. By that same token, if you are able to fix a blocker please try and work on them before tackling any other bugs. All blocker patches have landed on the tree and we are feature-complete now! At least that’s the idea, we hope the MailNews guys won’t give us any more headaches.
    • Help patches can go in after b3 as string freeze doesn’t affect Help.

Further 2.1 scheduling:

  • Please help updating the New 2.1 Features page as we go.
  • Beta 3 should be followed by 2.1pre and our own release (candidate), which can possibly be based on Gecko 2.0.1 (which is now guaranteed to come).
  • We should release within 6 weeks from FF4, but we should not release in the two weeks following FF4 final due to media being all about that release.
  • Managing the branching (or not) of comm-central for comm-20 will depend on the Messaging people, and they always want to push out branching to the last possible moment.
  • There might not be any more official security updates to the 1.9.1 branch after the upcoming one, so we should get a stable release based on Mozilla 2.0 out as soon as we can.

Feature List, Planning

Bug statistics for last two (full) weeks: 64 new, 53 fixed, 21 triaged.

Open reviews/flags:
37 review
11 super-review
0 ui-review
5 feedback

Major wanted/needed features:

2.1

Needing help, Unowned, Stalled
Active
  • bug 570004 Popup/”doorhanger” notifications [Neil].
    • Implementation moved to bug 595810.
    • Only lwthemes doorhangers are left to do.
    • NO l10n-impact
  • bug 606683 Allow customization of toolbar in Composer and MailNews Composition [IanN].
    • A lot of untangling needs to go on between the 3 editors that we have. We can expect a bit of code cleanup for 2.1 but full customization will probably go 2.next as it needs work on TB too which is taking a while to get reviews on, plus feedback from kaze.
  • bug 581526 Add SeaMonkey support for the Windows 7 jump list [mcsmurf].
    • landed!
  • bug 627240 Consider shipping built-in extensions as being installed into profiles [KaiRo]
    • landed!
  • bug 601493 no “plugin crashed” UI [Ratty].
    • landed!
  • bug 521159 [SeaMonkey 2.1] Port |bug 514327 Detect outdated plugins and offer upgrade path|.
    • landed!
  • bug 573538 No options for Safe-Mode [InvisibleSmiley].
    • landed!

We also should take a look at the other items on 2.1-wanted
Also the nominations need triaging.

  • We will need to take a close look at Lightning, which is mainly targeting Thunderbird.
    • Lightning 1.0b4 seems to be targeted to be Gecko 2.0-based.
    • Due to recent Lightning patches/fixes, Lightning nightlies are now working again on SM trunk.

2.next

Needing help, Unowned, Stalled
  • bug 460953 kill-rdf port.
  • bug 436794 Enable Mac OS X system address book per default and add UI.
    • SM UI needed, unowned, helpwanted.
  • bug 449728 Drag tabs between windows.
  • bug 477845 Build a standalone (Gecko 2.0) Composer. [kaze]
    • kaze is currently busy with his new job so doesn’t have much time to spend on this.
    • bug 477840 Backport KompoZer to Composer (Depends on bug 477845).
    • kaze has done a ton of work there. We still need to work out some organizational issues. At the moment there is no active interest from MoMo for bringing standalone composer into comm-central. That’s something we (KaiRo and kaze) will have to negotiate with the Thunderbird team (dmose).
  • bug 507841 Port Bug 422814 – Make account configuration quick, easy, and more secure (autoconfig, Quick Account Setup).
  • bug 533908 SeaMonkey Mail: tabs not restored [misak].
  • bug 523274 Complete new default theme icon set.
  • bug 526210 Update the icon set for the SeaMonkey Modern Theme.
    • bug 548778 New communicator icons (based on Strata theme) for SeaMonkey. Some proposed icons got posted, we should take a look how to get that contribution into the product.
    • The rest is unowned so far.
  • bug 87098 [SeaMonkey] Delete key should delete location bar history list entry.
    • No l10n impact
    • (InvisibleSmiley: ) Neil said “Actually our location bar history doesn’t and can’t use autocomplete at all.”, moving to 2.next.

For now only a drop zone for those that surely will not make 2.1 any more.
