Features

Aurora (29)

  • Looking good, note *no* new locale support contrary to plan of record. Translations are complete just not productized. Fx30, Fx31 are chock full
  • Go/No Go for Synth APK Support for Apps, we’re making sure we feel good about going to beta: https://etherpad.mozilla.org/fxmarketplaceGONOGO
  • We are going to do some guerilla sync testing now that clock skew issues shouldn’t be causing failures, stay tuned

Nightly (30)

Market Insights from the Market Strategy Team

Desktop

  • Happy 25th Birthday to the World Wide Web! [1] 25 years ago, the draft for the Web was completed, resulting later in browsers which became the killer app of the Internet [2] and Mozilla has been part of that story. [3]
  • Chrome Web Store will permit Themes, Extensions and Packaged Apps to be sold, and the latter two can be offered as free trial. [4] Meanwhile, Google’s new policy automatically disabling extensions downloaded from sources other than the Chrome Web Store [5] has been receiving some criticism [6] although unlikely to affect the policy to limit such extensions to dev and canary channel builds and enterprise users.
  • Google is expected to unveil plans for its wearable-centric platform and SDK later this month [7] aligned with it’s work with LG in this space. [8] Meanwhile, Chromecast sales crossed into the millions in the US [9] and will be expanding to more countries while the Chromecast SDK [10] has already been utilized to build some already popular apps [11] even as competition emerges. [12]
  • With only 4 weeks to go before 488 million [13] XP machines, or 30% of all computers on the Internet, lose support from Microsoft and infection rates expected at 66%, [14] 49% of computers in China are still using XP with many never having been updated. [15] The US advises consumers to not use Internet Explorer on Windows XP machines. [16] as IE versions on XP receive their final patches before April 15th. [17]

Marketing, Press & Public Reaction

  • Heads down focused on Australis launch. Specifically a social sharing component not unlike Glow 1.0.
  • Beta launch plans: the tour moves to Beta and we’ll be doing outreach to the folks in our Beta channels (newsletter, snippets, etc) + press outreach.

Other

The Need To Know

(Release and system issues that may impact engineering this week.)

  • Metro has been pulled from shipping in FF28 bug 981166
    • QA is doing extra testing around this for the 28.0RC shipping tomorrow

Notices/Schedule (lsblakk/sylvestre)

  • FF Desktop 28.0rc shipping tomorrow (Wed)
  • FF 28.0b10 Mobile shipping later today
  • Merge Day is next Monday
  • Pwn2Own starts tomorrow, we are prepared for possibility of respinning FF28 over the weekend if some exploit is discovered (and fixed)
    • Very unlikely to do a 27.0.2 as we are shipping 28 on Tuesday and should conserve resources as well as user update fatigue
Next Merge: March 17, 2014 Next Release: March 18, 2014
Trains
Central: 30 Aurora: 29 Beta: 28 Release: 27
58 bugs (53 bugs last week) 2 bugs (47 bugs last week)
Unresolved Aurora 29 Trackers (non-security, not tracked for Beta) Unresolved Beta 28 Trackers (non-security)

Build Changes (gps)

(Build changes of which engineers should be aware.)

RelEng (catlee)

(Repo, test, and other information for engineers from the release engineering team.)

Upcoming Outages/Upgrades

(System outages/upgrades and tree closures that impact engineering.)

  • (On-going) Bugzilla issues of late:
    • Max attachment ID was hit yesterday due in part by an accidental large increment of the autoinc value and by not monitoring the situation. Caused intermittent problems for several hours as we switched the column to unsigned bigint on all slaves and a few db inconsistencies that were manually fixed. Back to normal now; other columns updated at the same time, and bug filed for nagios monitoring.
    • Slave replication lag; IT identified main culprit as being use of MyISAM, which locks tables on full-text searches (and there are some very, very big searches going on). Switching to InnoDB soon; more solutions, like moving long queries and polling to a separate slave, are being pursued.

Team Stand-ups

(In <2 mins, what did your team accomplish last week, on what is your team working on this week, and on what, if anything, is your team blocked? No questions during the stand-ups. All questions should be asked during the roundtable.)

Developer Tools (Mossop)

  • DevTools dark theme: use higher contrast text for main body content bug 971418
  • Add preferences in options panel to hide command buttons on DevTools tabbar bug 974947
  • Move event-emitter to toolkit bug 976679
  • The Web Console logging API (console.*) has been disabled by a script on this page bug 970914
  • Syntax highlight all JS objects and functions in console output bug 584733

75 Bugs Fixed

Firefox Mobile (mfinkle/blassey)

  • Much progress is being made on Firefox Hub (ability to add more home panels). Recent landings include:bug 942878, bug 975841, bug 959290. We’ll be making incremental progress and plan on launching the full feature as of Fx32
  • FxA authenticated Sync (v1.5): progress is steady, a number of issues have been fixed according to the latest info from identity so give it another shot if you’ve been testing on Android an
  • There is a go-no/go for Synthetic APK support for Fx Marketplace Apps for Android for Fx29: https://etherpad.mozilla.org/fxmarketplaceGONOGO

irc #planning Log From This Meeting

10:42 cpeterson: RyanVM: what makes 976479 a hot bug? It doesn't look like it has a lot of reported failures, if I am reading the bug correctly.
10:45 philor: cpeterson: freshly introduced so it doesn't have a high total, yet, but has a high rate, crashes so we have to retrigger the run, happens in pretty much any test so we have to manually star most of them
10:50 philor: cpeterson: yeah, combination of that and the way there's nothing we can do about it, since we can't just stop running mochitest-2 and mochitest-3 and browser-chrome on OS X, so it's going to have to become owned by and fixed by someone
...
11:03 cpeterson: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Platform/2014-03-11
11:03 dholbert: FWIW: there's a Mountain View office-moving brown-bag happening right now, if mountain view attendance is a bit low
11:03 jesup: khuey or jduell perhaps
11:04 khuey: hmm?
11:04 davidb: the OMGCHANGE should ramp up
11:05 davidb: (re australis moving to beta)
11:05 Noah_: Callek_disconnected: hmm, I'm not sure if you're online or not - was wondering if you ever got a answer to your old sync question?
11:07 khuey: jesup: what's up?
11:08 jesup: orange factor IPC issues on mac - they're looking for an owner (or someone to find an owner)
11:08 jesup: you were mentioned verbally by someone
11:08 dveditz_: "ran out of numbers" -- the db was obviously not made by mathematicians
11:09 khuey: lol do not want
11:09 jesup: khuey: the downside of not being there to object ;-)
11:09 philor: you thought just palming it off on smaug in the bug would be enough?
11:09 khuey: yes
11:09 mcote: dveditz_: :)

Identity

Speaker Location: Vidyo

Last Friday, we announced that Persona is transitioning to community ownership. You can read more on the Identity blog at http://identity.mozilla.com/post/78873831485/transitioning-persona-to-community-ownership

The most important points:

  • Mozilla is still supporting Persona. We’re just not funding new feature development.
  • Many of the original paid contributors are still working on Persona in their free time, alongside long-time community contributors.
  • Persona is Open Source! Join us in #identity and #persona and help us fix authentication on the web! 🙂

As for why the change is happening: Read the blog post! In short, we didn’t see as much adoption as we were hoping for by this point, nor did we see a clear path to adoption by other browsers / major email providers. Instead of piling on features, we’ve decided to keep Persona focused on what we know it does well: simple, email-based authentication.

  • We had a spike in feedback as a result of the Firefox newsletter… the system works!

Market Insights from the Market Strategy Team

Desktop/Platform

  • Chrome beta for Android version 34 added built-in Chromecast streaming for videos so a laptop is not required to cast web videos to the TV. [1] Chrome 34 also introduces a new HTML attribute for responsive images and the unprefixed version of the JavaScript Web Audio API [2], besides hands-free Google Voice Search.[3]
  • Juniper research forecasts that revenues generated from Smart Home services are set to reach a global market value of $71 billion by 2018, rising from $33 billion last year, with 80% of that revenue expected to come from entertainment services. [4] Microsoft Research has built the prototype [5] of a 3D browser called SurroundWeb, which allows Web pages to display content across multiple surfaces in a room [6], highlighting a role for the browser in the entertainment services segment. Apple TV device and content revenues rose to $1B last year. [7]
  • Data since the 1920s shows that the U.S. advertising industry has always been between 1% and 1.4% of GDP, averaging 1.29%. [8] For each “new” medium at the time — radio, television, and Internet — the growth pattern has seen similar curves. The first 5 years saw rapid (but declining) growth rates, and after the fifth year, growth rates stagnated. In this context, Google’s approach with Google+ at the center [9] and Spider.io acquisition [10] is precise targeting which Fiber [11], Glass, Now, Cars, etc enhance.

Mobile

  • WhatsApp announced it will implement support for voice on iOS and Android in Q2 and on Windows Phone and Blackberry later this year.
  • Nokia announced the X series base on Android and featuring the Bing mobile application suite. Aimed at the middle-tier and the emerging market, the device series is meant to replace the Nokia Asha series as the low-end of the company’s product portfolio. There are 2 devices unveiled, Nokia X and Nokia X+ and a third Nokia XL was announced. They are priced at 89 Euros (X), 99 Euros (X+) and 109 Euros (XL). The X come bundled with 10GB of Microsoft Skydrive storage and the Opera browser.
  • Nokia also announced a new S30 phone, the 220, which will be 29 Euros, or $40, and a new Asha, the 230, which will be 45 Euros or $60.
  • Tizen will be refocusing on smart watches instead of smartphones, pointing to a strategy of deployment in the Internet of Things.
  • Privacy was a bigger theme at MWC this year than last year, with the Blackphone focused on security and privacy as a user value proposition.

Marketing, Press & Public Reaction

  • Firefox 29 Launch: We’re cranking on this, currently creating the post-tour landing page that we’ll be using at launch. Lot’s and lot’s of other projects at work as well.
  • Firefox for Windows 8 Touch: We’ll be using the What’s New page to let Windows 8 users know we now also work in touch-mode
  • Firefox Engagement Meetup: Most of the Engagement team will be locked in a room talking Firefox tomorrow

Status of the SeaMonkey Buildbot Master and Tree

  • New breakage: bug 977676 SeaMonkey’s puppet broken due to requirement of ffxbld ldap password.
  • Python has been updated on all buildboxen!
  • We are perma-orange on comm-central, comm-aurora and comm-beta due to problems with tests
    • Windows en-US builds are being successfully compiled but tests are not working due to a dependency on python 2.7.3.
    • bug 908090 ImportError: No module named json, on SeaMonkey Linux/Windows (all) test runs, due to (still) using Python 2.5. We do have python 2.7 installed but our build system is picking up python 2.5 instead.
      • ewong’s patch is waiting for review. It was manually patched on the master; but, was reverted and the buildmaster was reconfigured and so the changes are gone. Need to have the patch pushed officially in order for this bug to be fixed.
    • pymake is failing with “invalid syntax” again because of an outdated Python.
    • Priority on fixing this and l10n repacks after 2.24 release.(No ETA yet)
    • bug 943740 is tracking the progress (or lack of one) in building trunk and aurora on Linux & Mac from the downloading user’s POV. (Windows nightlies are still appearing on schedule — or were until a day or two ago.)
  • No langpacks since 29th August on trunk. Needs investigating.
    • Windows and Mac trunk langpacks directories have been removed on the FTP server, maybe for lack of recent XPIs (later than 2.20a1). Latest Linux langpacks are dated 29 August. Callek told Tonymec on IRC he has a hunch about why but more pressing things to do first.
    • In Bug 902876 Comment 12 Mcsmurf is waiting for feedback from the build team on how to proceed.
  • Buildmaster is up and running.
    • Callek is hand-approving requests for CLOSED TREE landings at the moment.
    • Due to the master having some mysql issues, Callek has put a halt on the mysql updates, which affects the tbpl. So nothing is showing in tbpl atm.
  • comm-* will be building out of mozilla-* (bug 648979 etc.). Jcrammer has mostly completed the coding. Next step is consultation with mozilla-central build peers on landing the patches and also getting implicit permission to add several new top level directories to mozilla-central.

Release Train

  • SeaMonkey 2.25 beta 2 is scheduled for March 4.
    • [rsx11m] There are no 2.25b2 candidate builds up, though they seem to be tagged.
    • IanN thinks we’ll be able to get about 3 betas in this cycle.
  • Useful Firefox Release Schedule link: Releases Scheduling

Hot Bugs

(Important bugs for which we need to find owners or additional help. If known, please include suggested team or knowledge needed to advance the bug.)

Orange Factor
  • The dom/downloads tests have joined dom/apps and dom/datastore as disabled on B2G due to frequent failures (bug 961014, bug 949451, bug 947167, etc) and lack of progress finding a fix. Unlike dom/apps and dom/datastore, these were also failing on B2G desktop builds. Filed bug 979446 for fixing and re-enabling.
  • bug 970052/bug 970053 – browser_URLBarSetURI.js disabled on debug Linux/OSX for frequent timeouts.

irc #planning Log From This Meeting

13:58 lmandel_: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Platform/2014-03-04
14:00 dveditz: KaiRo: I was re-watching Trading Places recently and was surprised to see everyone in New York (and maybe Philadelphia?) dressed up in costumes for New Years. Haven't seen that on the west coast
14:00 jedp: dveditz amazingly, i just re-watched that last week. and yes.
14:00 dveditz: then again it was a plot point (gorilla/man-in-gorilla-suit confusion) so maybe they just made it up for the movie
14:01 KaiRo: dveditz: interesting
14:02 dveditz: jedp: I wasn't intending to, just stumbled on it on a lazy rainy day so why not?
14:03 catlee: :'-(
14:03 dveditz: catlee?
14:03 catlee: lmandel_ is stepping down running these platform mtgs
14:03 overholt: RyanVM|sheriffduty, I'm working on the dom downloads bugs
14:04 RyanVM|sheriffduty: overholt: thanks
14:04 catlee: we need a going away party
14:05 lmandel_: catlee: Happy to have a party thrown.
14:06 RyanVM|sheriffduty: catlee: we only store logs for 30 days, so I'm wondering if we really need to save the history older than that
14:07 catlee: probably not
14:08 Pike: catlee: the only real counter-argument for strip is pushlog coming out of sync, right?
14:09 catlee: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/mozilla.dev.platform/Hb2EKXZmY70
14:09 catlee: Pike: yeah, I think so
14:09 Pike: ... and if so, would the revlog storage proposal change that?
14:09 catlee: not sure
14:12 RyanVM|sheriffduty: lsblakk++
14:12 lsblakk: ?
14:12 KaiRo: after all, we have "10 F***ING DAYS" to ship a fix!
14:13 lsblakk: that's right :)
14:13 Pike: lmandel_: so was your last meeting the shortest?
14:13 lsblakk: so doing it in 4 is icing
14:13 dveditz: so who is going to be leading the mtg?
14:13 jedp: thank you, lmandel_
14:13 johnath: dveditz: cpeterson
14:14 dveditz: thanks
14:14 dveditz: and yes, thank you lmandel, especially for your reformatting of the mtg and stern hand keeping it on track -- lots of information in a short amount of time
14:15 dveditz: one of my more useful meetings of the week for time spent
14:25 jesup: dveditz: You were probably seeing the Philadelphia "Mummers" Parade. Mardi Gras-ish costumes, string bands/dancing, and comics. Been going since the ?late 1800's? on Jan 1. The troupes build constumes and practice year-round more or less
14:28 lmandel_: dveditz, jedp: My pleasure. I'm glad to hear that you find the meeting useful. That was my goal.
14:29 jedp: lmandel_ very helpful. short and sweet updates; lots of info efficiently delivered.

Firefox account based Sync progressing well through nightly/aurora. Over 15k accounts activated so far, roughly half actively doing syncing on a daily basis. > 30% have multiple devices. Even with 7500 accounts active, still seeing very few bug reports which “makes us nervous” — can still use help testing, especially for multi-device desktop/android flows. Thx to everyone that has filed bugs so far! QA/ops load tests yielding performance/stability improvements that put us on track for the expected big bump in usage when 29 goes to beta channel.
