Chrome banner ads in Japan
November 30th, 2010 by John Daggett
These two banner ads appeared on the Japanese version of Slashdot. The wording on the top one from last week includes “Google chrome, a browser built from scratch by Google” but the one this week just says “Google chrome, a browser built by Google”.
Um, guys, it’s open source, lots of folks contributed including some good folks at Google, no?

Chromium is open source.

No. An open source project isn’t automatically a community project. Typically, community participation is very low in open source projects backed by large corporations who pursue their own goals with the project (Netscape 7, Java, Google Chrome to mention a few). So – “built by Google” describes it pretty well.

Built by scratch is clearly wrong, but looks like they’ve picked up on that themselves.
Any software uses libraries, does doing so mean it’s manufacturer can’t claim to have made it? Chrome is steered, controled and marketed by google, so I think that’s enough for them to claim that it’s made by Google.

Hah, true, a large part of the rendering engine has been originally created by the KDE project and improved by Apple among others. That’s nothing like “from scratch”.
