We\u2019ll help you identify which connected devices provide robust privacy and security features \u2014 and which ones don\u2019t.\u00a0 <\/i><\/p>\n<p>&#x1f3b6; He sees you when you&#8217;re sleeping &#x1f3b6;<\/p>\n<p>&#x1f3b6; He knows when you&#8217;re awake &#x1f3b6;<\/p>\n<p>&#x1f3b6; He knows if you&#8217;ve been bad or good\u2026 &#x1f3b6;<\/p>\n<p>The lyrics to \u201cSanta Claus Is Comin&#8217; to Town\u201d detail an omniscient Saint Nicholas. But in 2018 \u2014 in an era of always-listening products and apps \u2014 the lyrics might as well be detailing the latest connected device.<\/p>\n<p>This holiday season, Mozilla is helping consumers identify which connected products are secure and trustworthy \u2014 and which aren\u2019t. The goal: help consumers shop for gifts based on how well they protect the privacy and security of their friends and family, in addition to traditional factors like a product\u2019s price and performance.<\/p>\n<p><b>For the second year, we\u2019re releasing <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/privacynotincluded\/\"><b>*Privacy Not Included<\/b><\/a><b>, a shopping guide that lists connected devices\u2019 privacy and security traits. Mozilla researchers spent the last several months exploring whether or not products encrypt personal information, offer automatic security updates, have clear privacy policies, and more.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11826 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/red-pen-ec570ae1-ca07-4035-d032-c837f5a9b543-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"483\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2018\/11\/red-pen-ec570ae1-ca07-4035-d032-c837f5a9b543-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2018\/11\/red-pen-ec570ae1-ca07-4035-d032-c837f5a9b543-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2018\/11\/red-pen-ec570ae1-ca07-4035-d032-c837f5a9b543-600x338.png 600w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2018\/11\/red-pen-ec570ae1-ca07-4035-d032-c837f5a9b543-1000x563.png 1000w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2018\/11\/red-pen-ec570ae1-ca07-4035-d032-c837f5a9b543.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our researchers focused on the season\u2019s most popular connected devices in the United States, from Nintendo Switch and the latest Roku to Fitbits and assorted drones, smart watches, and even a smart dinosaur. This year\u2019s guide features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In-depth reviews of 70 products across six categories: Toys &amp; Games; Smart Home; Entertainment; Wearables; Health &amp; Exercise; and Pets.<\/li>\n<li>32 products were awarded a badge for meeting the <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/read-write-participate\/minimum-standards-for-tackling-iot-security-70f90b37f2d5\">Minimum Security Standards created by Mozilla, Internet Society and Consumer International<\/a>. To receive a badge, products must: use encryption; have automatic security updates; manage security vulnerabilities using tools like bug bounty programs and clear points of contact; and require users to change the default password if a password is required. Products receiving a badge include: <a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/privacynotincluded\/products\/nintendo-switch\/\">Nintendo Switch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/privacynotincluded\/products\/google-home\/\">Google Home<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/privacynotincluded\/products\/harry-potter-kano-coding-kit\/\">Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/privacynotincluded\/products\/athena-safety-wearable\/\">Athena Safety Wearable<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/behmor.com\/new\/\">Behmor Brewer Coffee Maker.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11844 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/02-seal-approval-twitter-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"481\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2018\/11\/02-seal-approval-twitter-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2018\/11\/02-seal-approval-twitter-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2018\/11\/02-seal-approval-twitter-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2018\/11\/02-seal-approval-twitter-1000x563.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2018\/11\/02-seal-approval-twitter.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mozilla researchers did not make a conclusive determination if over half of the products met Minimum Security Standards. This was based on factors including if a company did not respond to inquiries or if a company\u2019s response conflicted with recent independent security audits or penetration tester reports.<\/li>\n<li>Answers to <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@harraton\/how-we-evaluated-the-products-in-mozillas-privacy-not-included-buyer-s-guide-2018-6b122f885de0\">important questions<\/a> like, \u201cCan this product spy on me?\u201d \u201cIs it tracking my location?\u201d and \u201cCan I control the data it collects about me?\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>The debut of the Creep-O-Meter, an interactive tool allowing readers to rate how creepy they think a product using a sliding scale of \u201cSuper Creepy\u201d to \u201cNot Creepy,\u201d \u00a0as well to share how likely or unlikely they are to buy it. The home page of the *Privacy Not Included guide lists product based on rankings from Not Creepy to Super Creepy (Nearly 2,500 ratings were submitted by users during the guide\u2019s beta testing period that began in late October.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11846 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/05_creep-o-meter-twitter-v1-300x169.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"481\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2018\/11\/05_creep-o-meter-twitter-v1-300x169.gif 300w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2018\/11\/05_creep-o-meter-twitter-v1-768x432.gif 768w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2018\/11\/05_creep-o-meter-twitter-v1-600x338.gif 600w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2018\/11\/05_creep-o-meter-twitter-v1-1000x563.gif 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An assessment of how easy &#8212; or hard &#8212; it is to read a products\u2019 privacy policies using \u00a0Carnegie Mellon\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usableprivacy.org\/\">Explore Usable Privacy<\/a> project, which created an algorithm to determine reading levels. The most common reading level required is a college reading level (grade 14). <a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/privacynotincluded\/products\/tile-mate\/\">Tile Mate\u2019<\/a>s privacy policy is identified as the most difficult, requiring a college graduate reading level (grade 18), while the <a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/privacynotincluded\/products\/tractive-gps-3g-pet-tracker\/\">Tractive GPS 3G Pet Tracker<\/a> is identified as the easiest to read, requiring a middle school reading level (grade 8).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We soft-launched this year\u2019s guide at <a href=\"http:\/\/mozillafestival.org\">MozFest<\/a> in October. And already, readers are weighing in. <a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/privacynotincluded\/products\/nintendo-switch\/\">Nintendo Switch<\/a> \u2014 which features encryption and automatic security updates \u2014 has emerged as one of the more trusted devices among users in the guide, with 72% of readers saying \u201cnot creepy.\u201d Alternatively, the <a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/privacynotincluded\/products\/fredi-baby-monitor\/\">FREDI Baby Monitor<\/a> \u2014 which lacks encryption and has the default password \u201c123\u201d \u2014 has 73% of readers saying \u201csuper creepy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, why does Mozilla publish <a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/privacynotincluded\/\">*Privacy Not Included<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no shortage of holiday shopping guides. But most focus on price and performance, not privacy. We believe that\u2019s a major oversight. Each day, more and more headlines emerge about flawed connected devices. These devices can track our locations without us knowing; they can sell our data to a galaxy of advertisers; and they often can be hacked or manipulated. In recent years, even <a href=\"https:\/\/mic.com\/articles\/189673\/target-and-walmart-stop-selling-the-superhackable-kids-toy-cloudpets-after-pressure-from-mozilla\">stuffed animals<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/feb\/17\/german-parents-told-to-destroy-my-friend-cayla-doll-spy-on-children\">children\u2019s doll<\/a> have been compromised.<\/p>\n<p>*Privacy Not Included is part of Mozilla\u2019s work to spark mainstream conversations about online privacy and security \u2014 and to put individual internet users in control of their own data.
