{"id":12841,"date":"2020-11-17T23:08:50","date_gmt":"2020-11-18T07:08:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/?p=12841"},"modified":"2020-11-18T09:27:17","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T17:27:17","slug":"release-mozillas-greenhouse-gas-emissions-baseline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/blog\/2020\/11\/17\/release-mozillas-greenhouse-gas-emissions-baseline\/","title":{"rendered":"Release: Mozilla\u2019s Greenhouse Gas emissions baseline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When we <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blog\/2020\/05\/28\/mozillas-journey-to-environmental-sustainability\/\">launched our Environmental Sustainability Programme<\/a> in March 2020, we identified three strategic goals:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Reduce and mitigate Mozilla\u2019s organisational impact;<\/li>\n<li>Train and develop Mozilla staff to build with sustainability in mind;<\/li>\n<li>Raise awareness for sustainability, internally and externally.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Today, we are releasing our baseline Greenhouse Gas emissions (GHG) assessment for 2019, which forms the basis upon which we will build to reduce and mitigate Mozilla\u2019s organisational impact.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>GHG Inventory: Summary of Findings<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Mozilla\u2019s overall emissions in 2019 amounted to: 799,696 mtCO2e (<a href=\"https:\/\/stats.oecd.org\/glossary\/detail.asp?ID=285\">metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent<\/a>).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Business Services and Operations: 14,222 mtCO2e\n<ul>\n<li>Purchased goods and services: 8,654 mtCO2e<\/li>\n<li>Business travel: 2,657 mtCO2e<\/li>\n<li>Events: 1,199 mtCO2e<\/li>\n<li>Offices and co-locations: 1,195 mtCO2e<\/li>\n<li>Remotees: 194 mtCO2e<\/li>\n<li>Commute: 147 mtCO2e<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Product use: 785,474 mtCO2e<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>How to read these emissions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>There are two major buckets:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Mozilla\u2019s impact in terms of business services and operations, which we calculated with as much primary data as possible;<\/li>\n<li>The impact of the use of our products, which makes up roughly 98% of our overall emissions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In 2019, the use of products spanned Firefox Desktop and Mobile, Pocket, and Hubs.<\/p>\n<p>Their impact is significant, and it is an approximation. We can\u2019t yet really measure the energy required to run and use our products specifically. Instead, we are estimating how much power is required to use the devices needed to access our products for the time that we know people spent on our products. In other words, we estimate the impact of desktop computers, laptops, tablets, or phones while being online overall.<\/p>\n<p>For now, this helps us get a sense of the impact the internet is having on the environment. Going forward, we need to figure out how to reduce that share while continuing to grow and make the web open and accessible to all.<\/p>\n<p>The emissions related to our business services and operations cover all other categories from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ghgprotocol.org\/\">GHG protocol<\/a> that are applicable to Mozilla.<\/p>\n<p>For 2019, this includes 10 offices and 6 co-locations, purchased goods and services, events that we either host or run, all of our commercial travel including air, rail, ground transportation, and hotels, as well as estimates of the impact of our remote workforce and the commute of our office employees, which we gathered through an internal survey.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>How we look at this data<\/b><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>It\u2019s easy to lose sight of all the work we\u2019ve got to do to reduce our business services and operations emissions, if we only look at the overarching distribution of our emissions: <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12842 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/moz_blog_sustainability_emissions-pie-chart-300x169.png\" alt=\"Pie chart visualising 2% impact for Business Services and Operations and 98% for Product Use\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2020\/11\/moz_blog_sustainability_emissions-pie-chart-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2020\/11\/moz_blog_sustainability_emissions-pie-chart-600x338.png 600w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2020\/11\/moz_blog_sustainability_emissions-pie-chart-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2020\/11\/moz_blog_sustainability_emissions-pie-chart-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2020\/11\/moz_blog_sustainability_emissions-pie-chart-1000x563.png 1000w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blogarchive\/files\/2020\/11\/moz_blog_sustainability_emissions-pie-chart.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>If we zoom in on our business services and operations emissions, we\u2019ll note that our average emissions per employee are: <b>12 mtCO<\/b><b>2<\/b><b>e<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>There is no doubt plenty of room for improvement. Our biggest area for improvement will likely be the Purchased Goods and Services category.
