{"id":1204,"date":"2013-07-10T21:31:43","date_gmt":"2013-07-10T21:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/community\/?p=1204"},"modified":"2013-07-12T03:57:08","modified_gmt":"2013-07-12T03:57:08","slug":"boxing-is-not-for-sissies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/community\/2013\/07\/10\/boxing-is-not-for-sissies\/","title":{"rendered":"Boxing is not for sissies."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you move, things go into boxes.\u00a0 It&#8217;s sort of fun to figure out groupings of things that will make sense at unpack.\u00a0 You ask yourself &#8220;&#8230;better to make a box called <em>kitchen<\/em> or <em>pots<\/em>? <em>lamps<\/em> or <em>bedroom?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And, then there&#8217;s the almighty Bento Box &#8211; a Japanese creation that delineates a meal into little boxes inside of a big box (rice, meat, vegetables) &#8211; it&#8217;s just more fun to eat that way, right?\u00a0 Boxes help our brains know how to think about things that are otherwise abstract and hard so it&#8217;s curious how they got such a bad rap (better to think &#8220;outside the box&#8221;, don&#8217;t &#8220;box me in&#8221;, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>Planning the Summit, at least the logistics part, fits nicely into boxes &#8211; hotel box, travel box, budget box, etc.\u00a0 Boxes, I might argue, are critical to all projects because they move human brains from concept (thinking) to concrete (doing).\u00a0 Without them we can&#8217;t ship (literally and figuratively).<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s Summit will be unlike any other, no one will argue that.\u00a0 We&#8217;re doing things that we&#8217;ve never done before.\u00a0\u00a0 And I&#8217;m not talking about logistics.\u00a0 We <em>are<\/em> doing some unique things there too but those boxes exist (we&#8217;re just pushing them a bit) so that stuff feels relatively simple.\u00a0 I&#8217;m talking about content.<\/p>\n<p>The Summit Planning Team has spent a few weeks since the Paris Assembly wrestling with the question of content (all the stuff we&#8217;ll do at the Summit).\u00a0 We have all sorts of amazing pieces and ideas and passions and an amazing group of Delegates ready to help, AND, what we realized was, we have no boxes for this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What I learned this week planning the Summit:\u00a0<\/strong> If your project has no boxes, make them up, urgently.\u00a0 They may not be right but without them stuff is all over the place and nothing moves forward.\u00a0 Push the people who argue structure feels &#8220;corporate&#8221;.\u00a0 Boxes are not limiting but rather offer a way forward (in essence, they allow the brain the freedom to do meaningful work and stop the useless stuff).<\/p>\n<p>This week we asked <a href=\"https:\/\/mozillians.org\/en-US\/u\/Dia\/\">Dia Bondi<\/a> to help us design the Summit program (content).\u00a0 Within two days of her agreeing to help, we have boxes.\u00a0 Big, fat, glorious boxes and a clear path to magic.\u00a0 We&#8217;re ready to move.\u00a0 I promise to keep you all posted as the journey pushes on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you move, things go into boxes.\u00a0 It&#8217;s sort of fun to figure out groupings of things that will make sense at unpack.\u00a0 You ask yourself &#8220;&#8230;better to make a &hellip; <a class=\"go\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/community\/2013\/07\/10\/boxing-is-not-for-sissies\/\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":524,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[31740],"tags":[],"coauthors":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1204"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/524"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1204"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1204\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1204"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1204"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1204"},{"taxonomy":"author","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/community\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/coauthors?post=1204"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
