{"id":1523,"date":"2013-12-19T22:55:05","date_gmt":"2013-12-19T22:55:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/community\/?p=1523"},"modified":"2013-12-19T22:55:05","modified_gmt":"2013-12-19T22:55:05","slug":"what-motivates-a-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/community\/2013\/12\/19\/what-motivates-a-million\/","title":{"rendered":"What Motivates a Million?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post is a follow up to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/community\/2013\/11\/30\/userresearch\/\">Getting to know 1,000,000 Mozillians<\/a>\u201d where we shared that a small group was beginning to shape a research project intended to help us better understand:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How potential contributors find us,<\/li>\n<li>What they believe their involvement with Mozilla might include and,<\/li>\n<li>What Mozilla staff believes their role is in volunteer contributor interactions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since then, the team attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/air.mozilla.org\/community-building-in-2014\/\">Community Builders work week<\/a> in San Francisco where we shared our thinking and collected feedback on, and interest in, this project.\u00a0 Yesterday, the smaller group re-connected to frame both our research methodology and timeline. Here&#8217;s how it stands today:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research methodology proposal<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Capture potential interview subjects via the &#8220;Get Involved Page&#8221; then:\n<ul>\n<li>Conduct remote, semi-structured interviews AND\/OR<\/li>\n<li>Provide a chat interview\/survey option.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Larger survey of prospective contributors that connect with the &#8220;Get Involved&#8221; page over a two-week period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Potential interviews with people new to contributing to other causes to understand their selection process and commitment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Research timeline:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dec 11-13<\/strong>: Community Builders work week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dec 16<\/strong>: Plan confirmation and additions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jan 13-24<\/strong>: Survey and discussion guide prep\n<ul>\n<li>Present on Grow Mozilla call<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jan 27-Feb 10<\/strong>: Data collection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Feb 10-23<\/strong>: Data analysis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Feb 24-28<\/strong>: Presentation of findings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>March<\/strong>: Phase 2 preparations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our plan is to present the full project to the Community Builders group during the first or second Grow Mozilla call in 2014. The core working group is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/mozillians.org\/en-US\/u\/lshapiro\/\">Larissa Shapiro<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mozillians.org\/en-US\/u\/emgollie\/\">Emily Goligoski<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mozillians.org\/en-US\/u\/gpetrie\/\">Gemma Petrie<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/mozillians.org\/en-US\/u\/Mardi\/\">Mardi Douglass<\/a> but we know there is greater interest (we have the names of everyone who&#8217;s contacted us to date and will invite you personally to the <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.mozilla.org\/Grow\">Grow Mozilla<\/a> call).
