Mozilla <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blog\/2012\/01\/17\/mozilla-to-join-tomorrows-virtual-protests-of-pipasopa\/\">pulled out all the stops<\/a> to join this virtual protest. Our blackout page was viewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blog\/2012\/01\/19\/firefox-users-engage-congress-sopa-strike-stats\/\">tens of millions of Firefox users<\/a> in the United States, with millions choosing to learn more and take action, and hundreds of thousands raising their voices to Congress.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6979\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6979\" style=\"width: 252px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/278\/files\/2014\/01\/Sopa-screenshot.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6979  \" alt=\"The Firefox default start page was blacked out in protest on Jan. 18, 2012.\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/278\/files\/2014\/01\/Sopa-screenshot-252x146.png\" width=\"252\" height=\"146\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6979\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Firefox default start page was blacked out in protest on Jan. 18, 2012.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The result was a dramatic illustration for policymakers in the U.S. and around the world on how copyright law impacts the open Internet.<\/p>\n<p>Through the SOPA\/PIPA protest, the Internet community fought off a major threat to the open Internet. But the victory didn\u2019t change the evolution of copyright law we\u2019ve seen in past decades, with copyright terms expanding from 28 years <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arl.org\/focus-areas\/copyright-ip\/2486-copyright-timeline\">to life of the author plus 70 more<\/a>. We\u2019ve also seen increased statutory damages for infringement <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sony_BMG_v._Tenenbaum\">applied aggressively to online copying<\/a>, new kinds of liabilities such as circumvention of digital rights management, and sweeping enforcement campaigns that <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-31001_3-10444879-261.html\">falsely accused a grandmother of pirating South Park<\/a> as well as automated takedown systems so broad that they occasionally <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tweaktown.com\/news\/32015\/microsoft-files-dmca-takedown-with-google-against-itself\/index.html\">target themselves<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The evolution of copyright law in the years to come matters to Mozilla \u2013 to our product development efforts, as we push ahead with new ideas in Web and mobile technology, and to our global community of innovators and users.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/copyrightweek\">Getting copyright \u201cright\u201d<\/a> is a key piece of preserving the future of today\u2019s free and open Internet, and Mozilla is committed to doing its part in the effort.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks the two-year anniversary of the SOPA\/PIPA blackout, the day the Internet went dark in protest of draft American legislation that would have damaged the global open Internet.
