Our survey reinforces what grassroots action has already demonstrated: The repeal contradicts most Americans\u2019 wishes. The nation wants strong net neutrality rules.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe new Mozilla and Ipsos poll shows once again that Americans across the political spectrum overwhelmingly want strong net neutrality protections, and that they don\u2019t trust their ISPs to provide it for them without oversight,\u201d <\/strong>says <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/@gigibsohn\">Gigi Sohn<\/a>, Mozilla Fellow and former FCC counselor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhat should make policymakers stand up and take notice is that 78% of Americans, including 84% of adults under the age of 35, believe that equal access to the internet is a right, and not a luxury,\u201d<\/strong> Sohn continues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~<\/p>\n<p>Mozilla and Ipsos conducted this public opinion poll in February of 2018, surveying 1,007 American adults from across 50 states. Among our key findings:<\/p>\n<p><b>Outside of Washington, D.C., net neutrality isn\u2019t a partisan issue<\/b>. Americans from red and blue states alike agree that equal access to the internet is a right, including: 79% of Colorado residents, 81% of Arizona residents, and 80% of North Carolina residents.<\/p>\n<p><b>91% of Americans believe consumers should be able to freely and quickly access their preferred content on the internet<\/b>. Support for net neutrality is growing: When Mozilla and Ipsos asked this same question in 2017, 86% of Americans believed this.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11397 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/mozilla_net-neutrality_polling-graphic_91believe-copy@2x-600x310.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"310\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>78% of Americans believe equal access to the internet is a right<\/b>. This opinion is most common among younger Americans (84% of adults under the age of 35).<\/p>\n<p><b>76% of Americans believe internet service providers (ISPs) should treat all consumer data the same, and not speed up or slow down specific content<\/b>. This opinion is most common among older Americans (80% of adults ages 55+) and Americans with a college degree (81%).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11398\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/mozilla_net-neutrality_polling-graphic_peopleover55@2x-600x310.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"310\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>63% of Americans do not think that ISPs will voluntarily look out for consumers\u2019 best interests<\/b>, compared to 32% who agree with this statement. Faith in ISPs is declining: When Mozilla and Ipsos asked this same question in 2017, 37% of Americans trusted ISPs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11396 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/mozilla_net-neutrality_polling-graphic_63think@2x-600x310.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"310\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>See the full results from our poll <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Mozilla-Net-Neutrality-Survey-State-Boost-Topline-02-27-20182.pdf\">here<\/a>. See results from the 2017 Mozilla\/Ipsos net neutrality poll <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blog\/2017\/06\/06\/new-mozilla-poll-americans-political-parties-overwhelmingly-support-net-neutrality\/\">here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What\u2019s ahead?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cToday could be the start of a shift away from freedom and innovation,\u201d adds Denelle Dixon. \u201cSome opponents of net neutrality will say our concerns are misplaced, and that when April 24 fails to see a wave of blocking, throttling, and fast lanes, that they were right in their claims. But that\u2019s not how the world without net neutrality will develop. The impact won\u2019t be immediate, like a lightswitch. Instead, we\u2019ll see more of a gradual chipping away \u2014 an erosion into a discriminatory internet, with ultimately a far worse experience for any users and businesses who don\u2019t pay more for special treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is an active lawsuit on this matter in the case titled &#8216;Mozilla v. FCC&#8217; \u2014 and today is also the last day that others can file additional challenges against the FCC, following Mozilla\u2019s lead,\u201d Dixon concludes. \u201cWe\u2019ve been encouraged by the support we\u2019ve seen with allies filing suit in the industry, and we hope to see more organizations joining us in the fight to protect net neutrality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At some point in the coming months, the Senate will likely vote whether to undo the FCC\u2019s repeal of net neutrality. Per the Congressional Review Act, lawmakers can veto the FCC\u2019s decision with a majority vote. If the Congressional Review Act resolution passes the Senate, it will move to the House, then (maybe) the president\u2019s desk. (Learn more about the Congressional Review Act and net neutrality <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/02\/27\/democrats-fcc-reverse-net-neutrality-426641\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMembers of Congress can restore net neutrality protections right now by passing the Joint Resolution of Disapproval that has been introduced in both houses,\u201d Gigi Sohn says. \u201cVoters will make their displeasure known to anyone who doesn\u2019t support this measure in November.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, Mozilla will continue its fierce advocacy for a free, open internet.
