A series of art installations that turn online data into artwork. A panel about the unintended consequences of AI, featuring a former YouTube engineer and a former FBI agent. And a conversation with the inventor of the web.<\/p>\n<p>These are just a handful of the experiences at this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/mozillafestival.org\/\">MozFest<\/a>, Mozilla\u2019s annual festival for, by, and about people who love the internet. From October 22-28 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thersa.org\/\">Royal Society of Arts<\/a> (RSA) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ravensbourne.ac.uk\/\">Ravensbourne University<\/a> in central London, more than 2,500 developers, designers, activists, and artists from dozens of countries will gather to explore privacy, security, openness, and inclusion online.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mozillafestival.org\/tickets\">Tickets are just \u00a345<\/a>, and provide access to hundreds of sessions, talks, art, swag, meals, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Says Mark Surman, Mozilla\u2019s Executive Director: \u201cAt MozFest, people from across the globe \u2014 technologists from Nairobi, educators from Berlin \u2014 come together to build a healthier internet. We examine the most pressing issues online, like misinformation and the erosion of privacy. Then we roll up our sleeves to find solutions. In the meantime, here\u2019s a closer look at what you can expect:<\/p>\n<h2><b>Hundreds of hands-on workshops<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>MozFest is built around hands-on participation \u2014 many of your fellow attendees are leading sessions themselves. These sessions are divided among <a href=\"https:\/\/mozillafestival.org\/spaces\">six spaces<\/a>: Decentralisation; Digital Inclusion; Openness; Privacy and Security; Web Literacy; and the Youth Zone.<\/p>\n<p>Sessions range from roundtable discussions to hackathons. Participants will also suggest their own tools to combat these issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cTracking Mobile Trackers,\u201d a session that teaches you how to detect \u2014 and jam \u2014 the mobile trackers that prey on your personal data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cMessage Delayed: Designing Interplanetary Communication Tools,\u201d a session exploring what interplanetary messaging might look like. It\u2019s led by a researcher from MIT\u2019s Media Lab<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cCombating Online Distraction and Addiction,\u201d a session sharing techniques and tools that help us have a more focused and deliberate online experience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cBuild Your own Air Quality Sensor,\u201d a session that teaches participants how to build an open-source device for monitoring pollution in their neighborhood<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plus, an entire Youth Zone, featuring sessions <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/mozilla-festival\/our-top-seven-kid-friendly-activities-at-mozfest-2018-c3ec147564db\">for kids, by kids<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/guidebook.com\/guide\/147793\/\"><i>See all sessions\u00bb<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><b>Talks<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The MozFest Dialogues &#038; Debates stage features leading thinkers from across the internet health movement. The experience will engage players in various activities throughout the venue, demonstrating the trade-offs we each make when it comes to our personal data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/opportunity\/artists-open-web\/\">Art + Data<\/a>, a gallery of 36 interactive art installations that merge data and art \u2014 from ASCII scarves you can actually wear, to startling visualizations of the amount of personal data that\u2019s public online<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mozilla\u2019s second-ever <a href=\"https:\/\/advocacy.mozilla.org\/en-US\/privacynotincluded\">*Privacy Not Included<\/a>, a guide to help you shop for private and secure connected gifts this holiday season, will debut as MozFest. Some 70 products will be reviewed to reveal what exactly they do with your personal data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><b>MozFest House<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The Festival weekend \u2014 Saturday, October 27 and Sunday, October 28 \u2014 is where many sessions, talks, and experiences take place. But there\u2019s an entire pre-week of programming, too. MozFest House runs from October 22 to October 26 at the Royal Society of the Arts (RSA) and extends the festival into a week-long affair.
