This book is lauded by crypto-geeks, and it\u2019s a tome, to be sure. At 1,139 pages, it\u2019ll still take you less time to read <em>Cryptonomicon<\/em>\u00a0than it will to mine a Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Genre: American\u00a0History<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.penguin.com\/book\/george-washingtons-secret-six-by-brian-kilmeade-and-don-yaeger\/9781595231109\"><strong>George Washington\u2019s Secret\u00a0Six<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>By Brian Kilmeade and Don Yeager<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/digitalcitizen\/files\/2016\/09\/1-f28WtWpnTeAF0AmL_QBqNw.jpeg\" alt=\"1-f28wtwpnteaf0aml_qbqnw\" width=\"293\" height=\"450\" \/>With false maps, untrue battle plans and plenty of disinformation, the players in the American Revolution were early adopters of FUD. This book shows how it was done by the secretive Culper Ring, a group of civilians who used ciphers, codes and encryption to convey information to General George Washington about the British Army\u2019s activities as it occupied New York City. The Culper Ring\u2019s messages helped Washington thwart the British plans, which ultimately led to his victory and the birth of a nation. NBD. The book is a speedy read, definitely not highbrow material, as most of it is a fictionalized account of what historians believe occurred.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Genre: Non-Fiction<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.schneier.com\/books\/data_and_goliath\/\"><strong>Data and Goliath: The Hidden Battles to Collect Your Data and Control Your\u00a0World<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>By Bruce Schneier<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/digitalcitizen\/files\/2016\/09\/1-5_7oh-BLRZCpDnQPpfWk4g.jpg\" alt=\"1-5_7oh-blrzcpdnqppfwk4g\" width=\"300\" height=\"452\" \/>Written by renowned digital security and crypto expert, Bruce Schneier,\u00a0<em>Data and Goliath<\/em>\u00a0is essential post-Snowden reading for anyone looking to be knowledgeable on today\u2019s digital privacy issues. Schneier digs into the cost of government and corporate surveillance of our online lives. In the quest for so-called protection and convenience, Schneier asks us to consider: Have we given up more than we\u2019ve gained?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After reading any of these books, you might conclude that your personal privacy and digital security shouldn\u2019t be written off as fiction or into the history books.
