According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0fbf4d8e-022b-11ea-be59-e49b2a136b8d\">an investigation<\/a> by The Financial Times, a global newspaper based in the UK, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/f\/614708\/health-websites-are-sharing-sensitive-medical-data-with-google-facebook-and-amazon\/\">third party tracking practices on health websites<\/a> is widespread:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Some of the UK\u2019s most popular health websites are sharing people\u2019s sensitive data \u2014 including medical symptoms, diagnoses, drug names and menstrual and fertility information \u2014 with dozens of companies around the world, ranging from ad-targeting giants such as Google, Amazon, Facebook and Oracle, to lesser-known data-brokers and adtech firms like Scorecard and OpenX.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sharing sensitive, personal health information \u2014 like menstruation, fertility and medical conditions \u2014 with third parties without a user\u2019s consent is sticky territory in the UK thanks to the ePrivacy Directive (known as the Cookie law) and specific restrictions in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/internetcitizen\/2018\/05\/23\/gdpr-mozilla\/\">GDPR regulations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0fbf4d8e-022b-11ea-be59-e49b2a136b8d\">According to the FT<\/a> investigation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>The data shared included:<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>drug names entered into Drugs.com were sent to Google\u2019s ad unit DoubleClick.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>symptoms inputted into WebMD\u2019s symptom checker, and diagnoses received, including \u201cdrug overdose\u201d, were shared with Facebook.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>menstrual and ovulation cycle information from BabyCentre ended up with Amazon Marketing, among others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>keywords such as \u201cheart disease\u201d and \u201cconsidering abortion\u201d were shared from sites like the British Heart Foundation, Bupa and Healthline to companies including Scorecard Research and Blue Kai (owned by software giant Oracle).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><i>In eight cases (with the exception of Healthline and Mind), a specific identifier linked to the web browser was also transmitted \u2014 potentially allowing the information to be tied to an individual \u2014 and tracker cookies were dropped before consent was given. Healthline confirmed that it also shared unique identifiers with third parties.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This practice isn\u2019t always unlawful, but it is creepy. Tracking by third parties happens across a wide swath of websites, but it is especially unsettling for health-related websites.<\/p>\n<p>Confronting health issues is a vulnerable time, and something most people would prefer to keep private. Third party trackers make this virtually impossible, however. When third party trackers are deployed behind the scenes of a website, there is no real way for you to know:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>what information they collect about you,<\/li>\n<li>what they do with it,<\/li>\n<li>how securely it is stored,<\/li>\n<li>how long it will be circulated,<\/li>\n<li>who they are sharing it with, and<\/li>\n<li>who they are selling it to.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s equally impossible for us to know how and when this information will be used for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/neilhowe\/2017\/11\/17\/a-special-price-just-for-you\/#583fdd8590b3\"> price discrimination<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/08\/opinion\/ai-hiring-discrimination.html\"> employment discrimination<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/2\/7\/18211890\/social-media-life-insurance-new-york-algorithms-big-data-discrimination-online-records\"> service denials<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Facebook%E2%80%93Cambridge_Analytica_data_scandal\"> election influencing<\/a>, and other insidious practices.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/278\/files\/2019\/11\/WebMD2.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2391 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/278\/files\/2019\/11\/WebMD2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"382\" height=\"546\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Block trackers before they can track you<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re fed up with the level of third party tracking happening on the web, take control of your personal data with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/firefox\/new\/?utm_source=blog.mozilla.org&#038;utm_campaign=firefox_frontier&#038;utm_medium=referral&#038;utm_content=FT-article\">Firefox with Enhanced Tracking Protection<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Firefox <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/firefox\/privacy\/products\"><b>privacy protections<\/b><\/a> dashboard reveals who\u2019s trying to track you behind the scenes and helps you stop them. To see who\u2019s trying to track you on individual webpages, click on the shield icon to the left of the Firefox address bar. (If you don\u2019t see the shield,<a href=\"https:\/\/support.mozilla.org\/kb\/update-firefox-latest-version?utm_source=blog.mozilla.org&#038;utm_campaign=firefox_frontier&#038;utm_medium=referral\"> here\u2019s how to update your Firefox<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When the shield is <b>purple<\/b>, Firefox has blocked trackers and harmful scripts on a site.<\/li>\n<li>When the shield is <b>gray<\/b>, no known trackers or harmful scripts were detected on a site.<\/li>\n<li>When the shield is <b>gray and crossed out,<\/b> Enhanced Tracking Protection is turned off on a site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/firefox\/new\/?utm_source=blog.mozilla.org&#038;utm_campaign=firefox_frontier&#038;utm_medium=referral&#038;utm_content=FT-article\"> download Firefox<\/a>, <b>Standard level <\/b>tracking protection is enabled, blocking known<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/firefox\/what-are-social-media-trackers\/\"> social media trackers<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/firefox\/what-is-a-web-tracker\"> cross-site tracking cookies<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/firefox\/block-cryptominers-with-firefox\/\"> cryptominers<\/a> and tracking content in private windows on all sites, which provides a good balance of tracking protection while not breaking your favorite websites. You can choose to boost your privacy protections to <b>Strict<\/b>, or fine tune them using the <b>Custom<\/b> option. That allows you to block <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/firefox\/how-to-block-fingerprinting-with-firefox\/\">fingerprinters<\/a> and tracking content in all windows, not just private ones.<\/p>\n<p>To see the specific trackers lurking behind the scenes on a site, click the shield, then click on the tracker type to expand the list.
