Yep. And we\u2019ll tell you how.&nbsp;<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When I joined Mozilla, the organization had made the decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blog\/2018\/03\/21\/mozilla-presses-pause-facebook-advertising\/\">pause Facebook advertising<\/a> in light of the Cambridge Analytica privacy controversy. This was a decision that I understand, but I\u2019m changing course.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">For Mozilla, it boils down to this: our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/en-US\/about\/manifesto\/\">mission<\/a> requires that we empower everyone to protect themselves online, not just the folks that are plugged in to the recent techlash. And a lot of the people that may need our tools the most spend a lot of time on Facebook and Instagram.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the question becomes, can we reach folks on these platforms with our ads, while staying true to Mozilla\u2019s values? I believe we can, and it starts with being up front about what we\u2019re doing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s the skinny:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Online, people are segmented into small groups in order to serve them up highly-targeted advertisements. This is called microtargeting. And it happens countless times a day on the platforms we use every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many years the conventional wisdom was that this type of advertising was simply a better way to put more relevant ads in front of consumers. Relevant ads means better conversion for advertisers, which means more goods sold. And, hey, sometimes it works out well for people. Chances are you\u2019ve found a new shampoo or pair of shoes or set of weights because of these targeted ads. You\u2019ve also probably bought something you didn\u2019t need (or even particularly want) because of these targeted ads. I know I have &#8211; my half-used collection of skincare products can attest to that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem is not that these ads themselves exist, it is the complexity of the system that\u2019s the issue. The same highly sophisticated targeting tools that allow advertisers to find you can also be used for harm. This can look like overly aggressive ad tactics,&nbsp; or <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/04\/targeted-ads-dont-just-make-you-more-likely-to-buy-they-can-change-how-you-think-about-yourself\">even changing consumers\u2019 self-perception<\/a> after being targeted a certain way. In the most dangerous cases, advertisers can target groups with harmful messages, like targeting sick people with<a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.google.com\/feed\/aHR0cHM6Ly9wb2RjYXN0LnBvc3R0di5jb20vaXR1bmVzL3Bvc3QtcmVwb3J0cy54bWw\/episode\/NWRmM2VhNDQ0NmUwZmIwMDA4MzNlNTVk?hl=en&amp;ep=6&amp;at=1576597803495\"> treatments that don\u2019t actually work<\/a>, ads that discriminate against <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.google.com\/feed\/aHR0cHM6Ly9wb2RjYXN0LnBvc3R0di5jb20vaXR1bmVzL3Bvc3QtcmVwb3J0cy54bWw\/episode\/NWRmM2VhNDQ0NmUwZmIwMDA4MzNlNTVk?hl=en&amp;ep=6&amp;at=1576597803495\">different under-represented groups<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2018\/jun\/08\/british-army-criticised-for-exam-results-day-recruitment-ads\">deceptive ads targeting stressed teenagers<\/a> for army recruitment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what can we do? <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/netpolicy\/2021\/05\/27\/advancing-system-level-change-with-ad-transparency-in-the-eu-dsa\/\">It starts with transparency<\/a>. All large platforms who operate ad networks \u2014 Facebook, Google, YouTube \u2014 should disclose targeting parameters on their platforms through publicly available APIs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The health of the ad ecosystem is important to the future of the internet.
