Companies and regulators need to work hand in hand to provide stronger privacy protections to people. <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/security\/2018\/09\/05\/why-we-need-better-tracking-protection\/\"><em>Technical privacy protections by companies<\/em><\/a><em> are complementary to <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/netpolicy\/2019\/04\/04\/a-path-forward-rights-and-rules-to-protect-privacy-in-the-united-states\/\"><em>privacy regulation<\/em><\/a><em> and neither alone is sufficient.\u201d<\/em><\/p><cite>Marshall Erwin<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Marshall Erwin, Mozilla\u2019s Chief Security Officer, testified today before the Committee on House Administration. The Committee held a hearing on <a href=\"https:\/\/cha.house.gov\/committee-activity\/hearings\/big-data-privacy-risks-and-needed-reforms-public-and-private-sectors\">Big Data: Privacy Risks and Needed Reforms in the Public and Private Sectors<\/a>. Members of Congress and witnesses highlighted, among other privacy concerns, the need for baseline federal privacy protections.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his testimony, Marshall focused on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Mozilla\u2019s work to make our vision for privacy and security a reality in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/en\/products\/firefox\/firefox-now-available-with-enhanced-tracking-protection-by-default\/\">products<\/a> we <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/en\/products\/firefox\/latest-firefox-release-includes-multiple-picture-in-picture-and-total-cookie-protection\/\">build<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nightly.mozilla.org\/2018\/06\/01\/improving-dns-privacy-in-firefox\/\">technologies<\/a> we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/en-US\/products\/vpn\/more\/what-is-a-vpn\/\">develop<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The essential role that Congress plays in creating a healthier internet, including a call for US federal privacy legislation.<\/li><li>Mozilla\u2019s support for <a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/blog\/ahead-of-congressional-testimony-mozilla-and-nyus-edelson-say-facebook-cant-be-trusted\/\">complementary rules to provide greater transparency<\/a> into how people experience online discrimination and harm when their data is collected, used and shared without meaningful awareness or consent.<\/li><li>And finally, the need to foster stronger consumer protection and competition obligations, while simultaneously ensuring a favorable environment for privacy-enhancing technologies.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><em>\u201cWe believe through our product and policy work we can help address the data privacy gaps that exist today, impacting consumers, companies, and the public sector alike. Despite being a powerhouse of technology innovation for years, the United States is behind globally when it comes to recognizing consumer privacy and protecting people from indiscriminate data collection and use.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p><cite>Marshall Erwin<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Privacy online is in desperate need of reform and Mozilla\u2019s efforts to improve the ecosystem and empower people take many shapes. We advocate to policy makers for comprehensive privacy legislation, for <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/en\/mozilla\/news\/why-facebooks-claims-about-the-ad-observer-are-wrong\/\">greater ad transparency<\/a> and for <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/netpolicy\/2021\/11\/11\/mozilla-submits-comments-to-the-california-privacy-protection-agency\/\">strong enforcement<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/netpolicy\/2019\/12\/31\/bringing-californias-privacy-law-to-all-firefox-users-in-2020\/\">around<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/netpolicy\/2017\/05\/09\/eprivacy\/\">the world<\/a>. We offer <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/en\/products\/firefox\/firefox-now-available-with-enhanced-tracking-protection-by-default\/\">industry-leading anti-tracking protection by default<\/a> to all users in the Firefox browser and offer a VPN service. But we know we cannot do it alone. Others need to change too. That\u2019s why we work with other browser makers, ad networks, publishers and advertisers to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/en\/mozilla\/privacy-preserving-attribution-for-advertising\/\">put forward proposals<\/a> that would <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/en\/mozilla\/building-a-more-privacy-preserving-ads-based-ecosystem\/\">make online advertising less privacy-invasive<\/a> and improve people\u2019s privacy.
