Whenever new technology comes along \u2014 especially in industries like ours \u2014 it brings fear. Fear of losing control, fear of being replaced. That\u2019s real. But there\u2019s another side to this: AI can open doors we never thought possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skillshare.com\/en\/blog\/creativity-in-the-age-of-ai-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creativity in the Age of AI: Insights, Ethics &amp; Opportunities,\u201d<\/a> a report I co-wrote with digital policy expert <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/en\/internet-culture\/natalia-domagala-ai-mozilla-algorithms-rise-25\/\">Natalia Domagala<\/a> and technologist <a href=\"https:\/\/rise25.mozilla.org\/change-agents\/#angela-lungati\">Angela Lungati<\/a> \u2014 in collaboration with Mozilla and Skillshare \u2014 we explore both the anxieties and opportunities AI brings to creatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, we explore the future of creativity in this paper, touching on the ethical challenges and the immense possibilities AI brings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key points explored in the report:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ethical concerns about ownership<\/strong>: One of the biggest issues is ownership, as Natalia explores in our paper. AI pulls from massive datasets, often without the original creators\u2019 consent. This raises serious concerns about transparency and who owns the work AI generates. Copyright laws weren\u2019t built for this.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bias in AI<\/strong>: AI is only as good as the data it\u2019s trained on. If AI is trained on biased data, it will reproduce those biases. It\u2019s crucial to make sure AI tools are built with diverse datasets, and that the people designing them understand the importance of inclusivity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AI can lower barriers to creative innovation<\/strong>: The rise of generative AI tools like ChatGPT and OpenAI Sora is making high-level creative outputs accessible to non-experts. These tools can help level the playing field, allowing creatives to explore ideas and storytelling that wouldn\u2019t have been possible before.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A tool for cultural preservation<\/strong>: With \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/protopica.com\/\">Protopica<\/a>,\u201d a short film I co-directed with Will Selviz, AI allowed us to blend Caribbean heritage and futurism, creating a new form of storytelling that wouldn\u2019t have been achievable with traditional methods. This shows how AI can preserve culture while pushing creative boundaries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AI as a force for social change<\/strong>: Angela highlighted how AI-powered tools are supporting civic education and engagement in Kenya. For example, Corrupt Politicians <em>GPT<\/em> exposed corruption cases involving Kenyan politicians, while <em>Finance Bill GPT<\/em> simplified the complex provisions of a controversial finance bill. These tools have helped local communities understand the implications of proposed laws, contributing to nationwide protests and civic participation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AI amplifying, not replacing, human creativity<\/strong>: There\u2019s a real fear among creatives that AI could replace their jobs, and that fear is legitimate. In a world driven by productivity, companies often cut human roles first. But AI shouldn\u2019t be about replacing humans \u2014 it\u2019s about amplifying what we can do. It should be used to empower, not replace, human creativity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re curious about how AI is changing the creative world \u2014 whether you\u2019re excited or skeptical \u2014 this paper is for you. We explore the risks, the rewards and what AI means for the future of creativity.
