New Firefox Icon: Iteration 6

Note: this is a draft icon rendering for Firefox 3.5, subsequent iterations will be posted every 24 hours or so. Also note that while these drafts appear with numbers and in a chronological order, each draft experiments with a variety of different ideas as we try things out to see what they look like. It’s better not to think of these as a formal sequence, but rather a series of experimentations to explore the overall design space.

Also please note that the tail (with a current flat color) literally hasn’t been painted yet, this is a work in process as we try to define the correct shape for the tail. Once we get that figured out the tail will get detailing with texture, color and lighting.

The icon is being rendered by Anthony Piraino at the Iconfactory. The design has been influenced by a conceptual sketch by Jon Hicks, and a conceptual render by Stephen Horlander.

Thinking about Refreshing the Firefox Icon

  1. Wow, this looks fantastic. I love it :)

  2. I have to second the comment from Deb. The colors and effect looks great. Probably I have over-read one post from you but we have changed the angle of the globe too, right?

  3. Yes, this is a further improvement on ‘Iteration 5’. The tail is in better size proportion and the globe ‘highlighting looks better.

  4. The tail is much better than #5, I think the globe lighting is a tad better too (I think it should be a bit smoother though).

    Great work!

  5. The shape of the tail is perfect in this iteration. I say stick to it! The lighting for the globe is a little odd though.

  6. ^ What he said :-)

  7. Much, much better than iteration 5. The color is much better and the tail is looking good (though I’m looking forward to a proper “paint job”). The globe is close to perfect now. The fox could perhaps be a little brighter, but this is getting really close.

  8. Better than the last one, imo. However, it does have certain spaghetti feel to it. I can’t explain it very well.

  9. I think this is best FF logo till date :)

  10. Lorenzo Orlandi

I’d say that this time the tail is maybe a bit TOO feathery… It’s really very good, but now is going to look too much like one of these japanese or chinese FF mascotte…
I find the tail part of Stephen Horlander’s conceptual render the best so far! something like a mix of his one and this iteration would be great! :)

  11. Shouldn’t the fur at the bottom of the world also wrap around the globe, too? I’m referring to very orange piece of fur sticking out in the south-east corner.

    I like the improvements!

  12. My issue with the shape of the tail is that in order to get it wrapping the globe you’ve got some very deep “gaps” in the right-hand side of the tail, but only little ones on the left hand side. That makes the tail look very asymmetrical to me.

It feels to me like making the “V” shapes where the globe can be seen through gaps in the fur/flames, on the left hand side of the tail, deeper, would make the tail feel more symmetrical and make the right-hand side look less weird by comparison.

  13. In my opinion, the tail in this iteration doesn’t match the ‘realism’ of the firefox’s head/ear/shoulder/hand. Also, the globe seems waaaay too shiny ;)

Overall, this iteration is pretty good!

  14. This is a great improvement over the last one, as the globe colour no longer clashes with the fox.

  15. I think the tail shapes are now just about right and they appear to the most significant changes for this iteration. I think that the way the planet shows through in between the tail furr on the outside is now more subtle, less chunky in it’s 3D effect.

    Very good.

I look forward to seeing the ‘painted’ version, though I am not convinced there needs to be much more ‘painting’ done. What more painting is needed will hopefully be very delicate highlights here or there, nothing massive.

The globe is very good too. I like how foxy’s head casts a shadow as I think somebody previously suggested it should.

  16. I like it better than the first ones. It’s great !

  17. I can’t say anything but finish (tweak) the tail and jump onto the next task :)

  18. Kurt (supernova_00)

    Looks great!

  19. I like this one. The tail looks less feathery, yet still feels soft.

I just miss a bit more fur on the head; I don’t like it being so perfectly round on the top.

  20. I like that one.

Much better balance between right and left than the previous ones.

  21. The tail shape looks good, but i have some suggestions: in general, it will be fantastic if you experiment whit –totally–different textures (surprise us!), in the planet mostly (glossy makes me tired). And the panda body, at least for me, should have a more realistic texture, like in the ‘Hicks concept render 2008 r4’.

  22. Walid El-Damouny

The lack of flames is good. The logo with the tail looking like a flame was ugly IMO. It doesn’t convey the message. Firefox on fire or whatever doesn’t seem to get through to me. The original icon had brighter hairs on the head and neck which draws more attention (better). Very bright lighting on top of this globe. Original globe lighting is easier on the eyes. However keep it glossy to preserve an ocean like appearance.

Globe map could look like Mozilla logo continent. Hence ‘Planet Mozilla’ would be part of the icon!

  23. I think that the tail is looking a tad uniform and predictable. Stephen Horlander’s tail was more ‘roughed up’ and a little more messy, which is how I like it.

  24. I thought that all iterations were awesome, with the exception of the “aggressive” way that the fox “dominate” the earth.

I think its much better than it were on earlier iterations.
What if you guys turn the fox head (so it points to us)? On my mind it would free some of the earths surface and maybe even add an cuteness factor.
