Visualizing the Usage of Firefox’s Main Window

Christopher Jung from the Mozilla Metrics team has a great post up detailing a recent Test Pilot study of Firefox’s main window.

Be sure to check out his post for the details.  The team has also created a really awesome interactive heat map to help us analyze the data we are collecting.

This study was similar to an early one that we ran on the traditional menu bar interface.

It’s rather interesting how Mac OS X users use the Scroll bar much less frequently than Windows users. This is probably because of a much higher percentage of touchpads. Also, maybe it’s a sign of how better scrolling is on Mac OS X.

  2. Hmm, it could be because all the newer Macs come with a scrollwheel on the mouse…

  3. I thought that you intended to place the tabs in the titlebar as Chrome does.

    What are your plans?

  4. Given how often the Location Bar is clicked, would it not make Fitts’s Law sense to increase the height of the Location Bar and Search Bar to at least match the height of the Back button in large icon mode? You could also experiment with displaying the full page title of the current page in the Location Bar above the URL in such an arrangement (as per the Location Bar search results); this might require a bit too much space (can still experiment), though probably not anywhere near as much space as the easy-to-click toolbars took up in the old days (IE6 defaults etc.).

Chrome’s Location Bar is taller than that in Firefox and I think that Chrome’s Location Bar height is better.

  5. Please consider integrating history/closed tabs with the bookmarks button. See

  6. Dear Alex,

Install, FF-3.6 then install following addons for trial which I personally did, believe me my design was better than FF-4 – its just addons I chose. I hope you like it or would try it.

    Install FF 3.6

    Addons required
    1. Omnibar – (FF-4 seriously lacks)
    2. Strata40
    3. StrataBuddy (Mockup theme)
    4. No Titlebar
    5. Tabs on Top

Only problem (if more than 8 tabs opened) the other tabs go out bounds (fringes) of window. Rest lookwise it way ahead of FF-4. Believe me, or just try it. I bet you will like those.
