Help us shape the science track at MozFest – Aug. 14, 11 ET

Our next community call will take place next Thursday, August 14. The call is open to the public and will start at 11 am ET. Call in details can be found on the call etherpad (where you can also find notes and the agenda) and on the wiki. (If you have trouble with the toll-free number, try one of the numbers at the bottom of this post.)

The Science Lab meeting is our community call, taking place each month, highlighting recent developments and work of the community relevant to science and the web. Join us to hear more about current projects, find out how you can get involved, and hear from others about their work in and around open research.

On this month’s call we’ll be talking about this year’s Mozilla Festival (“MozFest” for short) and our plans for the science track, taking place this October (24-26) in London. This is the second “Science and the Web” track at the Festival, and we’re trying out a few new things to make the track even more engaging than last year. MozFest is where many of Mozilla’s best and most innovative ideas spring to life. It’s where passionate thinkers and inventors come together to learn from one another and engage in a conversation about how the web can help us do more, do better, and connect other likeminded members of the community around a common cause.

For this year’s event, we’ll be weaving in a continuation of last month’s #mozsprint, where participants joined us around the world to work on projects furthering open science. We’ll be building on that work and enthusiasm at the event, working on educational materials to further open science, hacking on tools to facilitate research on the web, translating materials to help expand our reach to new audiences, and even running some training. We’ll be highlighting a few of the projects on this month’s call, as well as discussing how you can join the fun.

We’ll also be sharing some tips and session ideas for first-timers, hearing from some leading community members about work they’re excited to bring to MozFest. On this month’s call, we’ll hear from Dave Riordan of the New York Public Library Labs on creating resources for the library community, Francois Grey from NYU CUSP / Citizen Cyberscience Center on participatory work at the Festival, and Amye Kennall from BioMed Central on contributorship and badging.

The session call is open until August 22, and we’d love to have you join us for this year’s event in London. Have an idea you’d like to bounce off of us? Want to help curate or lead a project for the sprint? Interested in running a training around working with data, authoring tools, or collaborative tools? Join us on Thursday to hear more how you can contribute.

Have an update, blog post or event you’d like to share relevant to open science? Add it to the etherpad (see line 114). It’s a great way to share what you’re working on and/or interested in with the community. Don’t be shy. Have a look at last month’s notes for an idea of what others contributed to the conversation.

Mark your calendars, tune in and help us spread the word. All are welcome, and be sure to join us a few minutes before 11 ET to secure a spot on the line. For call-in details and links to the etherpad, visit our wiki page. We hope you’ll join us.

Note: Having trouble dialing in? Try one of these numbers. (Note that they are toll calls and you’ll be charged by your telephone company if the number is long-distance.)
