You&#8217;ll never look at the Web the same way again!<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"magicdomid167\"><!--more--><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2>1) Get started<\/h2>\n<div id=\"magicdomid172\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"author-p-17593\">a) <\/span><strong><span class=\"author-g-tyrfailoold39l47\">Install the <\/span><span class=\"author-p-17593\">Firefox &#8220;<span class=\"author-g-tyrfailoold39l47\"><strong>Lightbeam&#8221;<\/strong><\/span> add-on<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"author-g-tyrfailoold39l47\"><strong>.<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"author-p-17593\">Using Firefox, go to <\/span><span class=\"author-p-17593 url\"><a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/firefox\/addon\/lightbeam\/\">https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/firefox\/addon\/lightbeam<\/a>. C<\/span><span class=\"author-p-17593\">lick on the &#8220;Add to Firefox&#8221; button. Then click the &#8220;Install Now&#8221; button in the dialog that pops up.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"author-p-17593\">b) <\/span><span class=\"author-p-17593\"><strong>Go to five of your favorite web sites. <\/strong>Could be Facebook, YouTube, Netflix,<em> the New York Times<\/em>, Amazon &#8212; anything.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"author-p-17593\">c) <\/span><strong><span class=\"author-p-784\">Now <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"author-p-17593\"><strong>click the Lightbeam icon in your toolbar.<\/strong> Take a look at the graph. It&#8217;s now filled with the sites you&#8217;ve visited (in circles) &#8212; plus all the hidden third parties that are active on those sites (triangles). <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"author-p-17593\"><strong>What are you seeing?<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"author-g-tbu4kq443h01dupi\">A third party is another company, like an advertiser, that tracks what you do on sites you visit. <\/span><span class=\"author-p-17593\">You may not have realized it, but you&#8217;ve just interacted with all of those third party sites &#8212; <\/span><span class=\"author-p-784\">in addition to <\/span><span class=\"author-p-17593\">the sites you <\/span><span class=\"author-p-784\">actually meant to visit!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>2) Take the quiz<\/h2>\n<p><code>[slickquiz id=1]<\/code><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"author-p-17593\">3) Fight back <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"author-p-17593\"><strong>Take steps to protect yourself from unwanted tracking<\/strong>. You can start by enabling &#8220;Do Not Track&#8221; on your Firefox browser. Under &#8220;Firefox Preferences,&#8221; click on the Privacy pane. Set your Tracking preference to &#8220;Tell sites that I do not want to be tracked.&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"author-p-17593\"><strong>This doesn&#8217;t fully protect you.<\/strong> Companies are starting to support Do Not Track, but you may not notice any changes initially. Mozilla is working with companies that have\u00a0 started to implement Do Not Track, and with others who are committed to doing so soon. There&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/webmaker.org\/en-US\/resources\/literacy\/weblit-Privacy\">more steps you can take here<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>4) Share<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span class=\"author-p-784\">Help other people protect their privacy by s<\/span><span class=\"author-p-17593\">har<\/span><span class=\"author-p-784\">ing<\/span><span class=\"author-p-17593\"> what you&#8217;ve learned<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"author-p-784\">. Post a link to this activity on <\/span><span class=\"author-p-17593\">Twitter or Facebook, send an email to <\/span><span class=\"author-p-17593\">friends, or <\/span><span class=\"author-p-784\">just talk to the person\u00a0 next to you.
