{"id":12376,"date":"2014-09-21T17:28:26","date_gmt":"2014-09-21T21:28:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webmakerblog.wpengine.com\/?p=12376"},"modified":"2019-02-26T12:41:09","modified_gmt":"2019-02-26T20:41:09","slug":"makerfaire2014day2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/foundation-archive\/mozilla-learning\/makerfaire2014day2\/","title":{"rendered":"Webmaker at World Maker Faire New York \u2013 Day 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The second and final day of World Maker Faire New York 2014 was humid and hot, but the swampy weather couldn&#8217;t\u00a0dampen the energy of the thousands of makers swarming the grounds of the<a href=\"http:\/\/nysci.org\/\"> New York Hall of Science<\/a> to explore, create, and learn. \u00a0Perhaps nowhere at Maker Faire was this energy more palpable than in our Webmaker tent, where representatives from all over Mozilla&#8217;s global Hive Learning Networks gathered for another day of making and teaching the Web.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 365px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-DyRe7HDLC8w\/VB8bqooa3DI\/AAAAAAAAwUM\/TSy9XWFbUZc\/w355-h473-no\/IMG_20140921_142740.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"473\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Assemble, from\u00a0Hive Pittsburgh, creates wearable electronics and explores electricity through creative expression.<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nSunday&#8217;s activities &#8211; which garnered two World Maker Faire Best in Show ribbons! &#8211; got makers of all ages hacking and creating through a variety of hands-on projects. \u00a0Attendees remixed websites with <a href=\"https:\/\/goggles.webmaker.org\/\">X-Ray Goggles<\/a>, combined\u00a0fashion and technology by braiding fabric and LED headbands with <a href=\"http:\/\/thebccp.org\/\">Brooklyn College Community Partnership<\/a>, and produced shadow puppetry stop-motion animations with <a href=\"http:\/\/bricartsmedia.org\/\">BRIC<\/a>.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 365px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-mh8Uoo6HYCM\/VB8drvoql1I\/AAAAAAAAwX8\/GhDd0CHKPzg\/w355-h473-no\/IMG_20140921_144901.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"473\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Braiding LED headbands in a workshop combining technology and fashion<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n&#8220;I&#8217;ve been back to this tent a couple of times this weekend because these activities are fun, but I guess I&#8217;m learning stuff about the internet, too, so that&#8217;s cool,&#8221; said Ruth, a middle schooler from Ohio, as she hacked a newspaper website to show her own custom headlines.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 365px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-D7LEwaeaovs\/VB8YMK-Mj9I\/AAAAAAAAwPc\/CSDf0SxcHFY\/w355-h473-no\/IMG_20140921_142442.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"473\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hacking websites with X-Ray Goggles<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nAttendees were not the only ones learning from all of the activities happening in our space, however. \u00a0Because our Webmaker exhibitors and workshop\u00a0teachers\u00a0were drawn from all over the global Hive network, activity leaders had the opportunity to learn from and engage with new peer organizations from all over the world.\u00a0 The Toronto Public Library created flip book animations next to the aquaponics garden created by Chicago&#8217;s Sweet Water Foundation. \u00a0New York&#8217;s World Up and Carnegie Hall made music next to sculptural game controllers created by Pittsburgh&#8217;s assemble. \u00a0New cross-city\u00a0connections were formed,\u00a0creating\u00a0the opportunity for\u00a0the activities we shared here to be scaled\u00a0across our network. \u00a0Hive organizations will\u00a0be building Chicago&#8217;s robot hands in Chattanooga, sharing Chattanooga&#8217;s\u00a0coding games for elementary schoolers in Chicago, \u00a0and expanding the work we started at Maker Faire well beyond the 70,000+ people who have passed through over the last two days.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 365px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-KRLwiJsHUNg\/VB76BdT-dlI\/AAAAAAAAwIA\/5SKyKdqiKVM\/w355-h473-no\/IMG_20140921_121151.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"473\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Geoff from Hive Chattanooga is a living billboard for our activities at Maker Faire.<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nThis ability to share and scale programs across cities is part of what&#8217;s so exciting about Hive&#8217;s ever-expanding network. Indeed, the potential impact of Hive Learning Networks on\u00a0how we create, grow, and scale connected learning experiences for youth is staggering. That&#8217;s why we&#8217;re continuing that work at\u00a0<a href=\"2014.mozillafestival.org\">MozFest 2014<\/a>, joining forces across Hive cities next month in London\u00a0to solve shared challenges\u00a0and scale web literacy and digital skills.<br \/>\nIf our World Maker Faire tent was a microcosm of the global\u00a0Hive network, MozFest will be Hive at scale, bringing together hundreds of organizations, leaders, and future catalysts.
