Kenya<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">After <\/span><span class=\"author-g-xxz122zz122zul2jw5bigfey\">completing our<\/span><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\"> first research trip <\/span><span class=\"author-g-xxz122zz122zul2jw5bigfey\">in<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/m4d\/2015\/02\/03\/webmakers-field-research-report-from-kenya\/www.mzl.la\/bangladesh\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\"> Bangladesh<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">, Webmaker went to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mzl.la\/kenya\" target=\"_blank\">Kenya<\/a><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mzl.la\/kenya\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">!<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<strong><span class=\"author-g-g3mtcxwdnixq1u6d\">These trips are part of an ongoing research program we are conducting to study technology and design approaches that enable greater participation on the mobile Web and help grow the creation of local content.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">We spent three weeks in November between Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa and Nakuru, to understand how people adopt, use and leverage the Web in their personal and professional lives.<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">We conducted in-depth interviews with <strong>59 research participants<\/strong> from all walks of life (artists, students, teenagers, business owners \u2026) and organised a Design Day\u00a0 with 14 <\/span><span class=\"author-g-xxz122zz122zul2jw5bigfey\">u<\/span><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">niversity <\/span><span class=\"author-g-xxz122zz122zul2jw5bigfey\">s<\/span><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">tudents, where we brainstormed about content creation, and paper prototyped mobile apps.<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">From this experience, we extracted findings such as:<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"author-g-xxz122zz122zul2jw5bigfey\">* Many people are not aware tha<\/span><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">t<\/span><span class=\"author-g-xxz122zz122zul2jw5bigfey\"> a greater <\/span><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">Internet <\/span><span class=\"author-g-xxz122zz122zul2jw5bigfey\">exists beyond<\/span><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\"> Whatsapp, and are limiting their use of the Web to Social Media,\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">* People in Kenya have a unique way of using mobile data, almost like a currency,\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">* There is a crucial lack of local content, blocking non-english speakers to access the Web,\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">* Making<\/span><span class=\"author-g-xxz122zz122zul2jw5bigfey\">, as an activity,<\/span><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\"> is not<\/span><span class=\"author-g-xxz122zz122zul2jw5bigfey\"> considered<\/span><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\"> cool,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">* Remixing is <\/span><span class=\"author-g-xxz122zz122zul2jw5bigfey\">viewed as <\/span><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">a crime,<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mzl.la\/kenya\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">and more !<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"magicdomid27\" class=\"\"><span class=\"author-g-xxz122zz122zul2jw5bigfey\">Based on this research, we mapped<\/span><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\"> Webmaker<\/span><span class=\"author-g-xxz122zz122zul2jw5bigfey\">\u2018s<\/span><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\"> potential users according to their <strong>digital literacy<\/strong> level<\/span><span class=\"author-g-xxz122zz122zul2jw5bigfey\">s<\/span> <span class=\"author-g-xxz122zz122zul2jw5bigfey\">and<\/span><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\"> their <strong>motivations and constraints<\/strong> when using the Web, and we wrote a set of <strong>personas portraits<\/strong>, to understand better who we are designing for.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid810\" class=\"ace-line\"><strong><span class=\"author-g-57p6o7llxipeptna\">You can discover all of this research in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mzl.la\/kenya\" target=\"_blank\">Webmaker\u2019s Field Research Report from Kenya<\/a>.<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-g3mtcxwdnixq1u6d\">We are currently in India doing our next phase of research.
