{"id":13614,"date":"2015-07-10T11:54:50","date_gmt":"2015-07-10T15:54:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webmakerblog.wpengine.com\/?p=13614"},"modified":"2019-02-26T12:40:21","modified_gmt":"2019-02-26T20:40:21","slug":"case-study-on-relationships-hive-learning-networks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/foundation-archive\/mozilla-learning\/case-study-on-relationships-hive-learning-networks\/","title":{"rendered":"Case Study on Relationships: Hive Learning Networks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the last few months, and as plans for<a href=\"http:\/\/webmakerblog.wpengine.com\/the-essence-of-web-literacy\" target=\"_blank\"> Mozilla Learning<\/a> in 2016 continue to emerge, <a href=\"http:\/\/hivelearningnetworks.org\" target=\"_blank\">Hive Learning Network <\/a>directors have been thinking about network design and relationships as key to how Hive participates and contributes to our vision of universal web literacy.<br \/>\nHive is a core component of Mozilla Learning Networks, and is a dynamic model for developing relationships at the city level. Our audience is comprised of individuals, after-school organizations, museums, libraries, schools, civic technology, and cities eager to take creative risks to transform teaching and learning in a digital age. Hive creates a base of leaders to support the change we want to see, and help move more people from basic understanding of web literacy to full participatory know-how.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hive is a relationship engine<\/strong> \u2014 an intentional, designed way to build connections that last. In our experience, there are five necessary conditions for cultivating successful relationships:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Trust: Hive serves as a thought partner and known resource for digital literacies, so that members can bring challenges and opportunities forth<\/li>\n<li>Stickiness: Individuals and organizations demonstrate an active commitment to Hive through transitions (e.g., job changes) because they see value in participating<\/li>\n<li>Quality of connections: Access to wide-ranging and meaningful partnerships<\/li>\n<li>Replicable resources and practices: Techniques, programs, curricula, etc. have broad appeal and can be implemented by others<\/li>\n<li>Ongoing investment: Maintaining and soliciting new funders, institutions, and people<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hive is a convener, a facilitator, and a partner in building durable, purposeful connections toward achieving shared goals. Hive recognizes and benefits from the existing expertise that member bring into the network, and these relationships are instrumental and mutual. Individuals and organizations participate in a Hive ecosystem for various reasons, ranging from networking and professional development to access, expertise and funding.<br \/>\n<strong>The return on Hive relationships yield positive outcomes that transform systems.<\/strong> To facilitate this kind of return, you need <em><strong>time to learn with one another<\/strong><\/em>, the capacity to develop <em><strong>distributed leadership<\/strong><\/em>, and an <em><strong>engaged and active membership<\/strong><\/em> committed to changing systems and outcomes for youth.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 672px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8636\/16139967638_0b7a0c7094_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"662\" height=\"309\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hive Chicago Buzz event, photo credit: Chicago Art Department<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<h4>Relationships &#8212;-&gt; full participation and leadership &#8211;&gt; concrete outputs<\/h4>\n<p>Building from basic web literacy to full participation is accelerated and deepened by relationships.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/roboticslady\" target=\"_blank\"> Jackie Moore <\/a>is a member of <a href=\"http:\/\/hivechicago.org\" target=\"_blank\">Hive Chicago<\/a> whose growth as an open web leader reflects the value of building universal web literacy within the context of long-term relationships. For several years she has been attending Hive Chicago monthly meet-ups to network, learn and share with other educators across the city. In 2014 she attended <a href=\"https:\/\/2015.mozillafestival.org\" target=\"_blank\">MozFest <\/a>as an ambassador and advocate for Hive. She further developed her leadership within the network as an accountable member on the local <a href=\"http:\/\/hivechicago.org\/moonshots\/\" target=\"_blank\">Moonshot<\/a> working group focused on transportation constraints for youth. Moonshots provide a focusing framework to <span class=\"\">collectively identif<\/span><span class=\"author-g-umvb8g4s5ranhaax\">y<\/span><span class=\"\"> and <\/span><span class=\"author-g-umvb8g4s5ranhaax\">solve shared problems<\/span>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"magicdomid119\" class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-umvb8g4s5ranhaax\">At the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hivechicagobuzz.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hive Chicago Buzz<\/a> event in January<\/span><span class=\"author-g-umvb8g4s5ranhaax\">, <\/span><span class=\"\">Jackie and <\/span><span class=\"author-g-umvb8g4s5ranhaax\">several <\/span><span class=\"\">other participants in this particular Moonshot<\/span><span class=\"author-g-umvb8g4s5ranhaax\"> group gathered youth input and devised plans to address youth transportation challenges.<\/span> <span class=\"author-g-umvb8g4s5ranhaax\">That collective effort inspired a later entry to the<\/span><span class=\"\"> Urban Sustainability Apps Competition <\/span><span class=\"author-g-umvb8g4s5ranhaax\">from which an <\/span><span class=\"\">authentic output<\/span><span class=\"author-g-umvb8g4s5ranhaax\"> emerged:<\/span><span class=\"\"> a youth ride-sharing app called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ridewit.me\/\" target=\"_blank\">RideW\/Me<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid23\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid123\" class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"\">Jackie<\/span><span class=\"author-g-umvb8g4s5ranhaax\">&#8216;s relationship with Hive is one of many relationships that extend throughout these success stories<\/span><span class=\"\">. The return on the relationship in this example <\/span><span class=\"author-g-umvb8g4s5ranhaax\">is <\/span><span class=\"\">clear\u2013her full\u00a0 participation,<\/span> <span class=\"\">a resulting web-scale project with a systems-level solution, and <\/span><span class=\"\">growth in<\/span><span class=\"\"> her capacity as a leader for the open Web.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line\">\n<div style=\"width: 527px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7708\/17290681455_383c291157_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"517\" height=\"344\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hive NYC Meet-Up<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Hive relationships, projects and models fuel Mozilla&#8217;s web literacy efforts<\/h4>\n<p>Hive leverages trusted relationships and draws from tested projects and practices to feed the Mozilla Learning Network pipeline, have a larger impact on the city, and prepare more youth and educators to read\/write\/participate on the Web. Two concrete examples of Hive feeding Mozilla&#8217;s broader efforts are <a href=\"https:\/\/teach.mozilla.org\/events\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maker Party<\/a> \u2014 the annual campaign that evolved from the <a href=\"http:\/\/webmakerblog.wpengine.com\/what-the-heck-is-a-hive-pop-up\" target=\"_blank\">Hive Pop-Up<\/a> event model \u2014 and the <a href=\"https:\/\/teach.mozilla.org\/activities\/\" target=\"_blank\">curricular modules<\/a> for Mozilla Clubs, which were developed in collaboration with Hive members and organizations. <a href=\"http:\/\/hivenyc.org%20\" target=\"_blank\">Hive NYC<\/a>&#8216;s work with the New York City Department of Education&#8217;s Office of Post Secondary Readiness illustrates the amplifying effects that can result from a mutually beneficial relationship across networks.<br \/>\nThrough a <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalready.net\/digital-ready-and-hive-nyc-two-networks-that-learn\/\" target=\"_blank\">multi-year partnership<\/a> with Hive NYC and the <a href=\"digitalready.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Ready<\/a> initiative, 30 local organizations have become ambassadors working with 15 public middle and high schools, reaching 1,500 students and bringing hands-on learning experiences with more intentional uses of the Web and technology. Hive facilitated these relationships as an intermediary to provide tested programs and practices to participating schools. In so doing, Hive NYC draws upon its unique relationships with educators and organizations, who apply their expertise and experience in Hive&#8217;s open-source learning labs to &#8220;teach it forward&#8221; with others.<br \/>\nThese are just a few examples of how Hive serves as an engine for developing powerful relationships.
