You&#8217;re invited to hack on open Twitter data to explore ideas on how to track and visualize the spread of epidemics via social media. This is a great chance for beginners to get their feet wet with a simple node.js app, explore the geoJSON data spec and the Google Maps API, and get their hands dirty with basic strategies for large databases &#8211; and if you can&#8217;t make it this weekend, jump into <a title=\"bioViz\" href=\"http:\/\/collaborate.mozillascience.org\/projects\/biosurveillanceViz\" target=\"_blank\">the project on Collaborate<\/a> anytime!<\/p>\n<p>Also this week was <a title=\"kaitlinThaney\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kaythaney\" target=\"_blank\">Kaitlin Thaney<\/a>&#8216;s keynote at <a title=\"wsspe\" href=\"http:\/\/wssspe.researchcomputing.org.uk\/wssspe2\/\" target=\"_blank\">WSSPE<\/a>, on the system design and societal considerations associated with sustainable scientific discovery in a distributed, open fashion. Bill will be updating our <a title=\"instructorTraining\" href=\"http:\/\/mozillascience.github.io\/instructorTraining\/\" target=\"_blank\">Instructor Training course material<\/a> with lessons learned shortly, and continuing to develop this offering in anticipation of the <a title=\"resbaz\" href=\"http:\/\/resbaz.tumblr.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\">Research Bazaar<\/a>&#8216;s Instructor Training &amp; SWC events at <a title=\"resbazConf\" href=\"http:\/\/resbaz.tumblr.com\/conference\" target=\"_blank\">their conference<\/a> early next year.<\/p>\n<p>This week was also our November community call &#8211; <a title=\"communityCall\" href=\"https:\/\/etherpad.mozilla.org\/sciencelab-calls-nov13-2014\" target=\"_blank\">check out the notes<\/a> if you missed it! This month was brought to us by three fine astronomy professionals: <a title=\"demitriMuna\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/demitrimuna\" target=\"_blank\">Demitri Muna<\/a> told us about recent plans to make astronomy data more open and usable via <a title=\"trillian\" href=\"http:\/\/trillianverse.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Trillian<\/a> and <a title=\"dat\" href=\"http:\/\/dat-data.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Dat project<\/a>, in his plan to aggregate data across experiments by section of the sky; <a title=\"jakeVanderplas\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jakevdp\" target=\"_blank\">Jake Vanderplas<\/a> showcased the <a title=\"escience\" href=\"http:\/\/escience.washington.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">eScience Institute<\/a>&#8216;s project to learn from the startup world and build a <a title=\"incubator\" href=\"http:\/\/data.uw.edu\/incubator\/\" target=\"_blank\">project incubator for novel scientific endeavors<\/a>; and <a title=\"lucianneWalkowicz\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shaka_lulu\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"\">Lucianne Walkowicz<\/span><\/a> connected us with the <a title=\"adlerPlanetarium\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adlerplanetarium.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Adler Planetarium<\/a>&#8216;s efforts to <span class=\"author-g-5cpv2uh92z122z1o4gql\">inspire exploration and understanding of our Universe<\/span>, build out citizen science projects via the <a title=\"zooniverse\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zooniverse.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Zooniverse<\/a> project, and tell us about <a title=\"dotastro\" href=\"http:\/\/dotastronomy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">.Astronomy 6<\/a>, coming up December 8-10 in Chicago!<\/p>\n<h2>Near-Term Forecast<\/h2>\n<p>Next week on <strong>Thursday, November 20 at 9 AM and 4 PM Pacific (UTC -8) is the next<\/strong> <a title=\"instructorHangouts\" href=\"http:\/\/forum.mozillascience.org\/t\/next-hangout-thurs-november-20\/146\" target=\"_blank\">Instructor Hangouts<\/a>!
