Photo provided by Jon Rogers.<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nLast week, we explored the topic of IoT with an open community discussion about how Mozilla is addressing this topic, some research informing our plans, what we\u2019ve learned so far, and where we\u2019re going.<br \/>\nLeading the discussion was Mozilla Foundation representative <a href=\"http:\/\/michellethorne.cc\/\">Michelle Thorne<\/a>, located in Berlin, Germany. Featured guests were <a href=\"http:\/\/quicksand.co.in\/team\/rikta-krishnaswamy\">Rikta Krishnaswamy<\/a>, user researcher from Quicksand in Bangalore, India and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dundee.ac.uk\/djcad\/staff\/jonrogers\/\">Jon Rogers<\/a>, professor of product design from the University of Dundee, Scotland.<br \/>\nHere are a few highlights from the discussion:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cBricking\u201d &#8211; When connected items lose functionality (from an update or malfunction, they become \u201cbricks\u201d. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/internetofshit\">Many items<\/a> are now connected but when they lose functionality it can disrupt daily life. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/14\/fashion\/nest-thermostat-glitch-battery-dies-software-freeze.html?_r=0\">Nest thermostat malfunction<\/a> is one example.<\/li>\n<li>Co-designing IoT &#8211; bringing \u201cordinary\u201d people into the design process IS NOT OPTIONAL. It\u2019s a new role for the designer &#8211; not just to physically build the thing, but to account for input\/feedback along the way. To make it relevant to the daily life. It&#8217;s a messy world out there &#8211; and ignoring it by only making smooth and shiny objects isn&#8217;t a responsible nor human way to respond.<\/li>\n<li>Human-centered design research &#8211; It&#8217;s about opening up the process, and bringing the intended people who will use the tech into the design process at certain points. Let&#8217;s make the process more democratic.<\/li>\n<li>User control &#8211; We don&#8217;t always have \u201con-off\u201d switches with current IoT. We need to start with a vision about privacy.
