{"id":14560,"date":"2016-06-21T11:24:28","date_gmt":"2016-06-21T15:24:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.webmaker.org\/?p=14560"},"modified":"2019-02-26T11:23:21","modified_gmt":"2019-02-26T19:23:21","slug":"making-big-impact-through-informal-summer-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/foundation-archive\/mozilla-learning\/making-big-impact-through-informal-summer-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Making Big Impact through Informal, Summer Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Summer learning programs offer many opportunities and challenges across the globe, and this month\u2019s Mozilla Curriculum Workshop aimed to unpack both the supports and obstacles to provide a working, open source solution: a convening and facilitation guide for hosting a summer learning event.<br \/>\nFeatured guests that joined us this month were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SuAdamsEdIT\">Su Adams<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/learning.mozilla.org\/clubs\"> Mozilla Clubs<\/a> Regional Coordinator, Founder and Computing Co-Coordinator of<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucantoo.org.uk\/\"> U Can Too<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/justmaybechris\">Christopher Rogers<\/a>, Educator, Organizer,<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/synapse\/what-to-expect-from-my-connected-learning-camp-a-way-into-things-please-join-us-502032fbd800#.jwknuvesn\"> Connected Learning Camp Lead<\/a>, Founder of<a href=\"http:\/\/justmaybe.co\/\"> JustMaybeCo.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/budtheteacher\">Bud Hunt<\/a>, IT and Technical Services Manager for the Clearview Library District,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/champions\/connected\/bud-hunt\"> White House ConnectEd Champion of Change<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over the span of an hour, co-hosts Chad Sansing and Amira Dhalla worked with our guests to&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify summer learning challenges such as physical meeting space, geography limitations, internet connectivity as well as accessibility, programming, and resources inequity.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage peer-to-peer learning (allowing the learners to help plan events, for example) and strong community building even among various ages and skill levels.<\/li>\n<li>Discuss tips to portray equal learning achievement among in-school learning and other informal learning environments that take place during the summer.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize that shareable content and communication between the learner and his or her home, social, and public influences is key to solidifying learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Watch the conversation unfold on the etherpad:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/imgflip.com\/gif\/15y55c\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"made at imgflip.com\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgflip.com\/15y55c.gif\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe agreement towards the halfway point in the conversation was that a convening and facilitation guide for hosting a summer learning event would be a helpful outcome. While it is a work-in-progress (and we do hope that you will contribute to it in the etherpad <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/MozillaFoundation\/curriculum-workshop\/blob\/master\/june-16-2016\/etherpad-transcript.md\">here<\/a>), the goal is that it will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Best practices for gathering youth together.<\/li>\n<li>Logistic practices for securing spaces, scheduling the day, and securing food and drink for the event.<\/li>\n<li>Facilitation tips for teaching and learning in participatory ways.<\/li>\n<li>An exemplar lesson or piece of content on making a \u201cdigital quilt\u201d (many project shares in one, online space) or other type of skill share between learners.<\/li>\n<li>Best practices for documenting the work and sharing it later.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can watch the full, recorded conversation below or <a href=\"https:\/\/learning.mozilla.org\/community\/curriculum-workshop\">Mozilla Learning\u2019s website here<\/a>.
