In this piece, Michael highlights how children embrace drawing in their early years, but are then (incorrectly) pushed to embrace writing as the main communication medium in primary\/elementary school. In this system, drawing is relegated to an \u2018extracurricular\u2019 or frivolous activity reserved only for art classes. While the cynics among us might dismiss this as an attempt to market Adobe\u2019s drawing products, there is a significant body of research which supports the need for drawing as a primary form of literacy. In Dr Susan Sheridan\u2019s \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.drawingwriting.com\/scribble.html\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Scribble Hypothesis\u2019<\/a>, she argues that drawing or \u2018scribbling\u2019 will help children further develop and improve their skills in speech, reading and writing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Child_Adult.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-783\" alt=\"Child_Adult\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Child_Adult-300x118.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"118\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Can drawing at a younger age make us better engineers when we&#8217;re older? (Images sources <a href=\"http:\/\/thelittlehousenursery.com\/gallery\/\" target=\"_blank\">1<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/?q=node\/401\" target=\"_blank\">2<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">While the benefits of drawing literacy remain a subject of debate, I believe that practical benefits do exist for students and researchers who embrace computational three dimensional drawing (technically known as Computer-Aided Design or CAD). I realised this in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/resbaz.tumblr.com\/post\/76085515315\/a-license-to-print-research-savings\" target=\"_blank\">my own research<\/a> where I designed (using CAD software) and 3D printed a sample holder for an experiment. In short, utilising the CAD and 3D printing resources at the University of Melbourne allowed me to save hundreds of dollars of research funds. Such cost-saving efforts will become increasingly important in Australia and other countries where government expenditure in research has been gradually declining over the long-term.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">While CAD and 3D printing skills can be valuable for researchers, there are some barriers in getting them to adopt the technology, such as:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">1. \u00a0 Making researchers aware of how the technology can save money (e.g., such as designing and printing experiment apparatus).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">2. \u00a0 Educating researchers as to when CAD and 3D printing technology is appropriate to their research objectives (i.e., should the researcher design and print the experimental apparatus, or defer to the specialists?)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">3. \u00a0 Teaching researchers the necessary skills to design and print their research products.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">To address these barriers, myself and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/resbaz.tumblr.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\">ResBaz<\/a> team recently created and taught one of the world\u2019s first<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/researchers-can-be-digital-blacksmiths-with-3d-printers-23475\" target=\"_blank\"> \u201cDigital Blacksmith\u201d<\/a> \u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com.au\/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&amp;ion=1&amp;espv=2&amp;ie=UTF-8#q=%23digismith\" target=\"_blank\">#digismith<\/a>) programs, where researchers were taught how to conceptualise ideas, how to use open-source CAD software and how to 3D print structurally sound objects. While a traditional blacksmith conceptualises and creates an object by forging and shaping metals, a #digismith replaces the traditional blacksmith tools (e.g., hammer, anvil etc.) with CAD and 3D printers to create their objects. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/resbaz.tumblr.com\/post\/78536699396\/3d-printing-summer-school-five-busy-days-one-awesome\" target=\"_blank\">summer<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/resbaz.tumblr.com\/post\/92988503279\/3d-printing-winter-school-roundup\" target=\"_blank\">winter<\/a> #digismith training programs, combined with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/resbaz.tumblr.com\/post\/80344338239\/3d-printing-summer-school-02-2014-course-notes\" target=\"_blank\">freely available course notes<\/a>, have been highly successful in developing this new, burgeoning research community.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/2b9tv4k2-1393219979.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-782\" alt=\"2b9tv4k2-1393219979\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/2b9tv4k2-1393219979-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Students learning how to use CAD software during the #digismith course<\/em><\/p>\n<p>By recently participating in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mozillascience.org\/the-mozsprint-heard-round-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mozilla Science Lab sprint<\/a>, myself and the ResBaz team at the University of Melbourne wish to take #digismith and this \u201cnew and unnamed form of Carpentry\u201d to the next level of collaboration between researchers. \u00a0The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/resbaz\/digismith\" target=\"_blank\">#digismith github repository is now online<\/a> and we\u2019ll be spending the next few weeks adding content from the original PDF version\u201d.
