If you have news or announcements you&#8217;d like passed on to the community, be sure to share on Twitter with @mozillascience and @billdoesphysics, or join our <a href=\"https:\/\/mail.mozilla.org\/listinfo\/mozillascience\">mailing list<\/a> and get in touch there.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Conferences &amp; Events<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>International Science 2.0 Conference<\/strong> in Hamburg ran this past week; a couple of highlights from the conference:\n<ul>\n<li>The OKFN highlighted their proposed <a href=\"http:\/\/opendefinition.org\/\">Open Definition<\/a>, to help bring technical and legal clarity to what is meant by &#8216;openness&#8217; in science.<\/li>\n<li>GROBID (<a href=\"http:\/\/scite-it.eu\/grobid\/jsp\/index.jsp\">site<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/kermitt2\/grobid\">code<\/a>), a tool for extracting bibliographic information from PDFs, was well-received by attendees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The first <strong>World Seabird Twitter Conference<\/strong> presentations have been compiled in a <a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/Seabirders\/wstc1\">post over at Storify<\/a> (what&#8217;s a &#8216;Twitter Conference&#8217;? Check out their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seabirds.net\/wsu-twitter-conference.html\">event info here<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/documentfreedom.org\/\">Document Freedom Day<\/a><\/strong> was this past Wednesday; <a href=\"http:\/\/fsfe.org\/news\/2015\/news-20150324-01.html\">more than 50 events worldwide<\/a> highlighted the value of open standards, and the key role of interoperability in functional openness.<\/li>\n<li>Right here at the Mozilla Science Lab, we ran our first <strong>Ask us Anything forum event on &#8216;local user groups for coding in research&#8217;<\/strong>, co-organized with Noam Ross &#8211; check out <a href=\"http:\/\/forum.mozillascience.org\/t\/research-coding-q-a-march-24-2015-3-pm-pdt\/214\">the thread<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mozillascience.org\/ask-us-anything-lessons-from-the-local-research-coding-groups-panel-discussion\">our reflections<\/a> on the event.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Blogs &amp; Papers<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/\">Electronic Frontier Foundation<\/a> came out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/deeplinks\/2015\/03\/locking-public-access-scientific-knowledge-unlocking-scholarly-research\">in support<\/a> of the Fair Access to Science &amp; Technology Research (<a href=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/hoap\/Notes_on_the_Fair_Access_to_Science_and_Technology_Research_Act\">FASTR<\/a>) bill, recently reintroduced to the US Congress as discussed on last week&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/mozillascience.org\/mozilla-science-lab-week-in-review-march-16-22\">Week in Review<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/noamross\">Noam Ross<\/a> posted a <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/noamross\/zero-dependency-problems\/blob\/master\/misc\/stack-overflow-common-r-errors.md\">detailed and data driven analysis<\/a> of what common errors people learning R struggle with (spoiler: an enormous fraction of them boil down to missing information). Ross goes on to consider how these trends can inform an effective strategy for teaching new R users how to read and debug common errors.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.in-mind.org\/users\/elizabeth-gilbert\">Elizabeth Gilbert<\/a> wrote an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.in-mind.org\/article\/a-junior-researchers-practical-take-on-the-why-and-how-of-open-science\">thoughtful description<\/a> of both value and strategy of open science for junior researchers, both in her field of Social Psychology, and beyond.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dgangul1\">Deep Ganguli<\/a> published <a href=\"http:\/\/technology.stitchfix.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/17\/grammar-of-data-science\/\">an illustrated journey<\/a> of his first experiences using R for data manipulation and visualization. An experienced Pythonista, Ganguli reports on the advantages of each language, and the importance of using the right tool for the job.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ctitusbrown\">Titus Brown<\/a> got down to brass tacks on <a href=\"http:\/\/ivory.idyll.org\/blog\/2015-what-to-do-with-sequencing-data.html\">exactly why open data is so important<\/a>, particularly in the context of the biological sciences.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SabinaLeonelli\">Sabina Leonelli<\/a> et al published a <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/enhanced\/doi\/10.1002\/geo2.2\/#OpenAccess\">thoughtful discussion<\/a> of practical and systemic ways to implement open science standards in real research.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9610-5370\">Kratz<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9592-2339\">Strasser<\/a> released a paper on <a href=\"http:\/\/nbviewer.ipython.org\/github\/JEK-III\/ResearcherDataPubPerceptions\/blob\/master\/Researcher%20perspectives%20on%20publication%20and%20peer%20review%20of%20data.ipynb\">Researchers Perspectives on Publication &amp; Peer Review of Data<\/a> (presented as an IPython Notebook), that examines how the research community envisions open data, and discusses how those goals inform the implementation of successful open data strategy.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mixtrak\">Michael Strack<\/a> began a <a href=\"http:\/\/mixtrak.tumblr.com\/post\/114478673191\/rock-climbing-the-learning-curve\">blog series<\/a> on his ongoing journey tackling a major data science challenge in his biological research. Strack describes the series as a case study in the importance of not working in isolation, and the value of a supportive and interactive research community.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/benmarwick\">Ben Marwick<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/software-carpentry.org\/blog\/2015\/03\/teaching-in-yangon.html\">reflected on his recent experiences<\/a> teaching Software Carpentry to archaeology students in Myanmar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Government &amp; Policy<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The 5th Annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/science-fair\">White House Science Fair<\/a> ran this past week; in addition to a $240 million dollar commitment to building STEM education in the US, the Office of Science &amp; Technology Policy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/blog\/2015\/03\/25\/citizen-science-everywhere-including-white-house\">plans to convene a Citizen Science Forum<\/a> before the end of this year to examine how to scale and support citizen science efforts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Open Projects<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Work continues on <a href=\"http:\/\/sciencetoolbox.org\/\">ScienceToolbox<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ScienceToolbox\/sciencetoolbox\">code<\/a>), an index of scientific software packages &#8211; check out their <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ScienceToolbox\/sciencetoolbox\/issues\">issues<\/a> for ways to get involved.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/arfon\">Arfon Smith<\/a> pushed a <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/openjournals\/brief-ideas\/releases\">new release<\/a> of the popular <a href=\"http:\/\/beta.briefideas.org\/\">Journal of Brief Ideas<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Week in Review is our weekly roundup of what&#8217;s new in open science from the past week.
