{"id":2902,"date":"2015-11-26T13:38:50","date_gmt":"2015-11-26T21:38:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/?p=2902"},"modified":"2019-02-28T12:40:06","modified_gmt":"2019-02-28T20:40:06","slug":"mozilla-festival-2015-thats-a-wrap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/foundation-archive\/mozilla-science\/mozilla-festival-2015-thats-a-wrap\/","title":{"rendered":"Mozilla Festival 2015:  That&#8217;s a wrap &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now that the dust has settled from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/en-US\/foundation\/\">Mozilla Foundation<\/a> annual <a href=\"https:\/\/2015.mozillafestival.org\/\">Mozilla Festival 2015<\/a> there\u2019s time to reflect on the success of this year\u2019s Mozilla Science Lab <a href=\"https:\/\/mozillascience.org\/mozfest-2015\">\u201cOpen Science\u201d<\/a> track that took place on the 9th Floor at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mozfest\/22694196670\/in\/album-72157658649418943\/lightbox\/\">Ravensbourne<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mozfest\/22490041949\/in\/album-72157658649418943\/lightbox\/\">University<\/a>, London UK \u2013 November 6 &#8211; 8.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/NinthFloorPic.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2951 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/NinthFloorPic-300x209.jpg\" alt=\"NinthFloorPic\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/TopViewOfCoffee.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2958 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/TopViewOfCoffee-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"TopViewOfCoffee\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mozfest\/22253353593\/in\/album-72157658649418943\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5774\/22253353593_f31dbd1e77.jpg\" alt=\"MozFest_8Nov_156\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both\"><\/div>\n<p>The spirit of MozFest was again, electrifying and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nmanaud\/status\/663679119385878528\/photo\/1\">inspirational<\/a> and that was in large part due to the energy and enthusiasm of the 70+ <a href=\"https:\/\/mozillascience.org\/mozfest-2015\">facilitators (bottom)<\/a> that ran over 35 sprints and trainings in the \u201cOpen Science\u201d space over the three day festival \u2013 not to mention of course, the huge number of participants that came together to learn, tinker, explore and hack at the intersection of science and the Internet, and learn how the Web can advance scientific work.<\/p>\n<p>The festival began Friday night with a Science Fair where we featured our new <a href=\"https:\/\/mozillascience.org\/announcing-our-2015-mozilla-fellows-for-science\">Mozilla Fellows for Science cohort<\/a>, took a look at geocoding from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Stuart_Lynn\">Stuart Lynn (CartoDB)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/auremoser\">Aurelia Moser (CartoDB)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/riordan\">David Riordan (Mapzen)<\/a> as they demo\u2019d a preview of their session <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/riordan\/what-is-geocode\">&#8220;Putting the world in its place: Geocoders, their promise and pitfalls&#8221;<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MeMohanty\">SP Mohanty<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23MozFest%20%23openscience%20%23learning%20%23interactiveteaching&amp;src=typd\">demonstrating<\/a> his <a href=\"https:\/\/mozillascience.org\/cernwebfest-yet-another-3d-controller-ya3c\">YA3C<\/a> project that he entered in the <a href=\"https:\/\/webfest.web.cern.ch\/\">CERN Summer WebFest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mozfest\/22211708684\/in\/album-72157658567152683\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/674\/22211708684_d1bfd3a93e.jpg\" alt=\"MozFest_6Nov_252\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both\"><\/div>\n<p>For the next two days the Open Science <a href=\"https:\/\/mozillascience.org\/mozfest-2015\">schedule (mid-page)<\/a> was packed with sessions covering topics for <a href=\"https:\/\/app.mozillafestival.org\/#_pathway-open-data\">open data<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/app.mozillafestival.org\/#_pathway-science-communication\">science communication<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/app.mozillafestival.org\/#_pathway-citizen-science\">citizen science<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/app.mozillafestival.org\/#_pathway-open-research-accelerator\">open research<\/a>. project leads to collaborate on each other\u2019s projects and empower one another as well as receiving one-to-one mentorship from the Science lab team and community leaders. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/froggleston\">Rob Davey<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/billymeinke\">Billy Meinke<\/a> ran an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dbild\/status\/663014145894297600\/photo\/1\">awesome<\/a> session on <a href=\"http:\/\/slides.com\/billymeinke\/mozora-workshop#\/\">How to run an Open Source Science project<\/a> with a follow-up <a href=\"http:\/\/billymeinke.com\/2015\/11\/19\/how-to-run-an-open-source-science-proj\/\">blog post<\/a> by Billy on the session outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday afternoon <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/minisciencegirl\">Amy Lee<\/a>, Study Group lead at the University of British Columbia, took to the MozFest main stage to participate in a lightning <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/mozilla-festival\/let-s-talk-about-open-science-at-mozfest-a3abad871ca2#.gk908xhp6\">talk about \u201cOpen Science\u201d<\/a> hosted by <a href=\"http:\/\/medium.com\">Medium<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/abbycabs\/status\/663045364820348928\/photo\/1\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/abbycabs\/status\/663045364820348928\/photo\/1<\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both\"><\/div>\n<p>The festival wrapped up Sunday night with incredible demos from the work that was done over the weekend.
