We&#8217;ve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/contributorship-badges-for-science-view-them-now\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">shipped working prototypes<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">, welcomed our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/announcing-our-2015-mozilla-fellows-for-science\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">first class of Mozilla Fellows<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">, grown the team and added <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/introducing-mozilla-science-study-groups\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">programmatic supports<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> to both catalyze collaborative, open source software development as well as sustain those communities through leadership training and mentorship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Below are some of the highlights from our 2015 End-of-Year Report. It details our 2015 activities, specifically our efforts to <b>connect with the community<\/b>, <b>build capacity<\/b>, and <b>develop prototypes with the community<\/b>. The full report can be <a href=\"https:\/\/figshare.com\/articles\/Mozilla_Science_Lab_End_of_Year_Report_2015_\/2020332\">downloaded from figshare<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"magicdomid209\" class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze b\"><b>Connecting with the Community<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"magicdomid137\" class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">We provide members of the research community with the supports needed to advance open science practice in their communities. In 2015 we built out additional programmatic and technical supports to facilitate this, from advances to our website to running our second global sprint. In 2016, we\u2019ll continue this work and explore models for incentivizing and engaging researchers worldwide to join us in furthering open science.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"ace-line\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/about\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3125\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/community.png\" alt=\"Some of our stellar Community\" width=\"805\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<ul class=\"list-bullet1\">\n<li><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze b\"><b>Global Sprint: <\/b><\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">In June, we hosted our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/global-sprint-2015\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">second annual Mozilla Science Global Sprint<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">. <\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z b\"><b>Over 40 project leads participated and over 100 meaningful code contributions were made<\/b><\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\"> (measured through pull requests on projects) in the course of two days. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/you-did-this-mozilla-science-global-sprint-2015\">Sprint activity nearly doubled from last year<\/a>, with<\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> 170 community members c<\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\">oming <\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">together in more than 30 cities around the world for over 53 consecutive hours of collaboratio<\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\">n and innovation<\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> on tools, <\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\">curriculum<\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">, and resources for open science<\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\">!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sprint3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-3123 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sprint3.png\" alt=\"sprint3\" width=\"636\" height=\"549\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul class=\"list-bullet1\">\n<li><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze b\"><b>Local Sprint<\/b><\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">: <\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\">W<\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">e <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/toronto-open-science-code-sprint-2015\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">piloted a smaller, local sprint<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> in the Mozilla Toronto offices in March 2015<\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\">, to build a city-based community that would sustain open projects throughout the year <\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">. This sprint featur<\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\">ed<\/span> <span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze b\"><b>five local open source projects<\/b><\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\"> and <\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">br<\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\">ou<\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">g<\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\">ht<\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> together researchers, designers, and developers for two class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> This year\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/2015.mozillafestival.org\/\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">MozFest<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> hit landmark registration with over 2,000 participants joining us in London on November 6-8. <\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z u\">Mozilla Fellows<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\">, we c<\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">urated the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mozillascience.org\/mozfest-2015\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">Open Science track<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\">, <\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">holding project sprints, trainings, <\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\">mentorship events, <\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">and an <\/b><\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze b\"><b>67 session leads from a range of backgrounds<\/b><\/span> <span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> We continue to run <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.mozilla.org\/ScienceLab\/Calls\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">monthly public calls<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> around open science, featuring the work of the community and exploring ways to bridge efforts and increase awareness around new projects. Over the course of this year, <\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze b\"><b>we had over 290 participants join us for these calls, 164 for the very first time<\/b><\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"list-bullet1\">\n<li><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze b\"><b>Collaborate<\/b><\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">: <\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\">We <\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">launched <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/collaborate\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">Collaborate<\/span><\/a> <span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">as the main project repository<\/span><span class=\"author-a-z80zz82zj1oz78zz84zqtksqnz85zz77zz81z\"> in September 2014<\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\">. We brought on our first Instructional Designer in August (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/welcoming-zannah-marsh\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">Zannah Marsh<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">) and Open Data Training Lead in September (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mozillascience.org\/welcoming-our-first-open-data-training-lead\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">Stephanie Wright<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">), as well as a Community Lead (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/welcoming-aurelia-moser-to-the-team\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">Aurelia Moser<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">) in December. This set up the foundation (and team) for our work moving forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"ace-line\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ace-line\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/learn.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-3128 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/learn.png\" alt=\"Trainings for Science\" width=\"720\" height=\"179\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<ul class=\"list-bullet1\">\n<li><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze b\"><b>Study Group Program:<\/b><\/span> <span class=\"author-a-z80zz82zj1oz78zz84zqtksqnz85zz77zz81z\">In April we launched <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/introducing-mozilla-science-study-groups\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">Mozilla Science Study Groups<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-z80zz82zj1oz78zz84zqtksqnz85zz77zz81z\">, <\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">a community-based event series run by researchers to support open science training and relationship building within their institutions. These are regular, often weekly events, varying over the course of the semester<\/span><span class=\"author-a-z80zz82zj1oz78zz84zqtksqnz85zz77zz81z\"> fr<\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">om programming lessons to communal working sessions and drinkups. We provide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mozillascience.github.io\/studyGroupHandbook\/\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">monthly calls, mentorship, and scaffolding for creating event sites<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> that come with Codes of Conduct and a handbook and lessons for getting started. To date, we have <\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze b\"><b>19 Study Group Leaders <\/b><\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">around the world<\/span><span class=\"author-a-z86zz83zz88zz89zz69zz69zez70zz68zz122zpa98z70zz68z\">, and<\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> this group<\/span><b> <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/mozilla-study-groups-december-update\"><strong><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">led<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze b\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/mozilla-study-groups-december-update\"> over 140 events and 46 open lesson plans at over 20 sites in less than a year<\/a>.<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"list-bullet1\">\n<li><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze b\"><b>\u201cWorking Open\u201d &amp; the Open Science Leadership Summit: <\/b><\/span><span class=\"author-a-z80zz82zj1oz78zz84zqtksqnz85zz77zz81z\">Our lead developer, Abby Cabunoc Mayes, created<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/mozillascience.github.io\/leadership-training\/index.html\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">The Working Open <\/span><span class=\"author-a-z75z6e5476z81ztnz67z6v0pj u\">G<\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">uide<\/span><\/a> <span class=\"author-a-z80zz82zj1oz78zz84zqtksqnz85zz77zz81z\">which <\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">provides a framework and resources for running successful open source projects, both software and curriculum based. We t<\/span><span class=\"author-a-z80zz82zj1oz78zz84zqtksqnz85zz77zz81z\">ested<\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> the materials in this guide in a live workshop setting in September 2015. The 2.5 day event &#8211; called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/open-science-summit-2015\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u201cOpen Science Leadership Summit\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> &#8211; <\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze b\"><b>brought together 15 project contributors, study group leads, and librarians to collaboratively craft and test workshop resources and better understand their needs<\/b><\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"list-bullet1\">\n<li><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze b\"><b>Mozilla Fellows for Science:<\/b><\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> With support from the Helmsley Charitable Trust, we <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blog\/2015\/01\/12\/announcing-the-mozilla-science-lab-fellowship-program\/\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">launched a fellowship program<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> for researchers to support code, curriculum and community building around open data and open source. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/fellows\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">This program<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> expands Mozilla\u2019s existing fellowships for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advocacy.mozilla.org\/open-web-fellows\/\"><span class=\"author-a-z75z6e5476z81ztnz67z6v0pj u\">O<\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">pen Web <\/span><span class=\"author-a-z75z6e5476z81ztnz67z6v0pj u\">A<\/span><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">dvocates<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/opennews.org\/what\/fellowships\/info\/\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">journalists<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">. This included mentorship in the lead up to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/global-sprint-2015\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">Global Sprint<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/2015.mozillafestival.org\/\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">MozFest<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">, as well as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/open-science-summit-2015\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Open Science Leadership Summit<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozillascience.org\/open-science-fellows-onboarding-and-onward\"><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze u\">Fellows onboarding<\/span><\/a><span class=\"author-a-53lz67zz86z74mz73zz89zz72z9z88zhz80ze\">. What we learned from those events is that there\u2019s a strong desire for community and project management support, for tasks such as roadmapping, facilitation, managing contributors and understanding your community.
