{"id":3487,"date":"2016-03-10T15:29:25","date_gmt":"2016-03-10T23:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/?p=3487"},"modified":"2016-03-10T15:29:25","modified_gmt":"2016-03-10T23:29:25","slug":"open-data-context","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/foundation-archive\/mozilla-science\/open-data-context\/","title":{"rendered":"Open Data: It&#8217;s All About the Context"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Marta Teperek from University of Cambridge just wrote up a <a href=\"https:\/\/unlockingresearch.blog.lib.cam.ac.uk\/?p=579\">nice blog post<\/a> about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcc.ac.uk\/events\/idcc16\">International Digital Curation Conference<\/a> that took place at the end of February in Amsterdam. \u00a0Of particular interest was a workshop called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcc.ac.uk\/events\/idcc16\/workshops#Workshop%203\">A Context-driven Approach to Data Curation for Reuse<\/a>\u201d. \u00a0One of the key takeaways from this workshop was \u201c(i)nsufficient contextual information makes data not useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an attempt to make it easier for researchers to provide contextual information, the Mozilla Science Lab has developed this <a href=\"http:\/\/mozillascience.github.io\/checklist\/\">ten-point checklist<\/a> to help you provide context for your data set to make it more reusable.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3491\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/OneSimplyDocuments-e1457652470836.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3491\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3491\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3491 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/OneSimplyDocuments-300x177.jpg\" alt=\"One does not simply share data without proper documentation.\" width=\"300\" height=\"177\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3491\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Document your data.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is not meant to be an exhaustive list of what\u2019s needed for every type of data set but we think it\u2019s a good generalizable checklist that works well for capturing the:<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHAT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WHO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WHERE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WHEN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<p><strong>HOW<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>of your data.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look.
