{"id":3890,"date":"2017-01-09T00:34:43","date_gmt":"2017-01-09T05:34:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/science.mozilla.org\/blog\/?p=3890"},"modified":"2017-01-09T00:34:43","modified_gmt":"2017-01-09T05:34:43","slug":"book-club-february","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/foundation-archive\/mozilla-science\/book-club-february\/","title":{"rendered":"Book Chat 2\/20: Dear Data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Starting small is how we hope to increase data literacy and further these conversations&#8230;But most importantly, this was a project where we put all of ourselves as human beings and designers into this radical experimentation: approaching the data we collected as snapshots of our days and lives&#8230;to discover with the most contemporary material, data.&#8221; ~ Giorgia Lupi, Stefanie Posavec, <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@giorgialupi\/dear-data-has-been-acquired-by-moma-but-this-isnt-what-we-are-most-excited-about-bdaa3376d9db#.jeip21tpy\">Dear Data Medium blog<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Just last week, Kirstie Whitaker posted <a href=\"https:\/\/science.mozilla.org\/blog\/how-do-twitter-book-clubs-work\">a lovely explanation<\/a> on our blog of how to host a book club on Twitter, something we&#8217;ve already <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23mozreads&amp;src=typd\">done twice @MozillaScience<\/a>, and something we&#8217;ll again do in 2017. \u00a0In December, we read\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Weapons-Math-Destruction-Increases-Inequality\/dp\/0553418815\"><em>Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy<\/em><\/a> by Cathy O&#8217;Neil, and further discussed math ethics in our <a href=\"https:\/\/public.etherpad-mozilla.org\/p\/sciencelab-calls-dec15-2016\">Community Call<\/a> on fairness, accountability, and ethical open science practice.\u00a0Our upcoming\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.mozilla.org\/programs\/events\/community-call-feb-16-11-et\">Community\u00a0Call<\/a>\u00a0(February 16th) is themed around\u00a0art\/science projects, and last Wednesday, we crowdsourced suggestions for a complementary book club read with our community on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3892\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/dear-data-crowd-tweet.png\" alt=\"dear-data-crowd-tweet\" width=\"570\" height=\"346\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MozillaScience\/status\/816681404125868032\">Twitter Poll: Dear Data wins<\/a><\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MozillaScience\/status\/816681404125868032\">poll results<\/a> are in, and for our\u00a0book club in February (2\/20\/17, 12pm ET), we&#8217;ll be reading <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dear-data.com\/\">Dear Data<\/a><\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/giorgialupi.com\/\">Giorgia Lupi<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stefanieposavec.co.uk\/\">Stefanie Posavec<\/a>!
