Callers outside the US should note that, due to daylight saving, 11 am EST in your local time may be different than usual. Find the details in <a href=\"https:\/\/etherpad.mozilla.org\/sciencelab-calls-mar20-2014\">this etherpad<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Software Carpentry is running <a href=\"http:\/\/swcarpentry.github.io\/2014-04-14-wise\/\">a bootcamp for women in science and engineering at Lawrence\u00a0Berkeley National Lab<\/a> on April\u00a014\u201315th. This is the second edition after <a href=\"http:\/\/software-carpentry.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/wise-roundup.html\">last year\u2019s event in Boston<\/a>. There\u00a0is still <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/wise-san-francisco-software-carpentry-bootcamp-registration-10121606999\">a few spots left<\/a>. Help by spreading the word among your female\u00a0colleagues.<\/li>\n<li>We are running a<strong> four<\/strong> simultaneous workshops this week: big thanks to all the instructors and helpers that made this possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"workshops\">Workshops<\/h2>\n<p>One workshop happened last week:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Michael Hansen, Stephen Turner, and Erik Bray taught a <a href=\"http:\/\/synesthesiam.github.io\/2014-03-10-uva\/\">workshop at the University of Virginia<\/a>, in Charlottesville. In addition to the usual curriculum, they also covered make\u00a0and pandas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"upcomingworkshops\">Upcoming\/This Week&#8217;s Workshops<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>03\/17 : New York University, New York, NY USA.<\/li>\n<li>03\/17 : University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley CA USA.<\/li>\n<li>03\/17 : University of Washington, Seattle WA USA.<\/li>\n<li>03\/17 : Purdue University, Lafayette IN USA.<\/li>\n<li>04\/02 : University of Victoria, Victoria, BC Canada.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"lessondevelopment\">Lesson Development<\/h2>\n<p>8 pull requests were merged, 8 issues were closed, and 3 issues were opened. In addition to the merges, we had 17 commits made by Raniere Silva, Trevor W. King, and Greg Wilson.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"othernews\">Other News<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Aleksandra Pawlik <a href=\"http:\/\/software-carpentry.org\/blog\/2014\/03\/tgac-bootcamp.html\">made a nice recap on the blog<\/a> of the first Software Carpentry bootcamp at the Genome Analysis Center in Norwich, UK.<\/li>\n<li>Justin Kitzes <a href=\"http:\/\/software-carpentry.org\/blog\/2014\/03\/collaborative-lesson-development.html\">wrote an opinion post<\/a> on why collaborative development of lessons and curricula is not as popular as collaborative coding or writing.<\/li>\n<li>There is an <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/swcarpentry\/bc\/pull\/375\">open issue in our main repo<\/a> to comment which are the tools that used to manage data analysis pipelines. Feel free to contribute.<\/li>\n<li>Greg Wilson <a href=\"http:\/\/software-carpentry.org\/blog\/2014\/03\/von-neumann-quote.html\">noticed a letter from Von Neuman<\/a> written in 1952 where the famous mathematician laments that people does not read other people\u2019s code.<\/li>\n<li>Greg also wrote two opinion pieces on the blog: one about some <a href=\"http:\/\/software-carpentry.org\/blog\/2014\/03\/everything-old-is-new-again.html\">old tools that becoming new again<\/a>, and another about <a href=\"http:\/\/software-carpentry.org\/blog\/2014\/03\/you-and-jimi-hendrix.html\">improvisation, Software Carpentry, and Jimi Hendrix<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Workshops for the spring and summer need instructors and helpers. If you\u2019re close to <strong>North Carolina<\/strong>, they need an instructor for a workshop at Duke University in June. Another instructor is needed for <strong>Pisa<\/strong> in Italy for a workshop also in June. In adittion, open spots for <strong>Toronto<\/strong> and <strong>Vancouver<\/strong> in Canada, <strong>Cold Spring Harbor<\/strong> and <strong>Ithaca<\/strong> in New York, <strong>Paris<\/strong> in France, <strong>the Federal Reserve<\/strong> in Washington, and Atlanta in Georgia.
