On April 22, 2017, there will be a\u00a0network of marches\u00a0worldwide aimed to engage the community in science and support scientific research.<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago I wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/teonbrooks.wordpress.com\/2017\/01\/29\/a-few-remarks-on-the-planned-march-for-science\/\">post<\/a>\u00a0about the planned march to advocate for the promotion of open science practices and to give\u00a0voice to the concerns of underrepresented people in science. Here are a few excerpts\u00a0that captures the spirit of the post:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Science must be open. Science must be transparent. Science must be accessible.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One of the most\u00a0commented topics over the past week has been about the gag orders both implemented and lifted at various federal agencies. One of\u00a0the takeaway points was that information was being restricted to the public. People are outraged, and justifiably so. While we are advocating for open and transparent sharing of data from these federal agencies, we should also be advocating for the same transparency practices to research funded by taxpayer dollars.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When diversity is set aside, diversity is not centered. Intersectionality matters.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There have been countless studies, <a href=\"https:\/\/dl.dropboxusercontent.com\/u\/9930067\/The%20Invisible%20Labor%20of%20Minority%20Professors%20-%20The%20Chronicle%20of%20Higher%20Education.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0114736\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/2011\/110818\/full\/news.2011.485.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>\u00a0for starters, that have highlighted some of the structural inequities for faculty of color in the\u00a0academy from\u00a0the representation to funding to institutional support.
