Ulrich Boser provides the profound answer in this thorough, insightful analysis of the psychology of social connectedness where we weigh communal interest over self-interest, selflessness over selfishness, giving to others over being a taker.\u201d \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_Zimbardo\"><strong>Philip Zimbardo<\/strong><\/a>, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus at Stanford University<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For the past few months, the Mozilla Science Lab has\u00a0experimented with hosting social media book club chats, events where we pre-read a text and then host a threaded conversation on Twitter about our experience and perspective on the chosen text.<\/p>\n<p>In February, we read\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dear-data.com\/\">Dear Data<\/a><\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/giorgialupi.com\/\">Giorgia Lupi<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stefanieposavec.co.uk\/\">Stefanie Posavec<\/a>, and further discussed art\/science fusion projections in our Community Call (February 13th), and benefited from amazing conversation with our fellows\/staff, the authors, and the broader community. Our upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/science.mozilla.org\/programs\/events\/community-call-apr-13-11-et\">Community Call<\/a> (April 13th) is themed around trust in science, building research accountability and public communication about the progressive advancement of open science in society, and in March we started planning a book club to match those themes. Last week, we crowdsourced suggestions for a complementary book club read with our community on Twitter!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3993\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/crowdsource.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"603\" height=\"330\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MozillaScience\/status\/838777581063274498\">Twitter Poll:\u00a0T<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MozillaScience\/status\/838777581063274498\">he Leap Wins!<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MozillaScience\/status\/816681404125868032\">poll results<\/a> are in, and for our\u00a0book club in April\u00a0(4\/17\/17, 12pm ET), we&#8217;ll be reading <a href=\"http:\/\/ulrichboser.com\/books\/theleap\/\"><em>The Leap: the Science of Trust and Why it Matters<\/em><\/a>\u00a0by Ulrich Boser!<\/p>\n<p>A short but substantive read, <em>The Leap\u00a0<\/em>provides pop science perspective on our relationship with trust as it pertains to public policy, political infrastructure, research findings, and bureaucratic systems. Aligned with our recent petition to support open access scientific research (<a href=\"https:\/\/iheartopendata.org\/en-US\/\">sign here!<\/a>), trust in science is complicated by public doubt.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3994\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/iheartopendata-1024x890.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"626\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Check out our petition to protect public access to scientific research:\u00a0https:\/\/iheartopendata.org\/<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When Mozilla launched the crowdsourced beta of the <a href=\"https:\/\/internethealthreport.org\/v01\/\">Internet Health Report<\/a>\u00a0in January 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/science.mozilla.org\/blog\/internet-health-report\">we committed to sharing resources<\/a> that support a free and open web-wide world; and our objectives at the Mozilla Science Lab mirror this goal of building community around reproducibility and integrity, fueled by transparent networks throughout\u00a0research domains. Open Science increasingly\u00a0conflicts with the objectives of proprietary publishers, political lobbyists, and possessive institutional agendas.
