This year, the hackathon featured challenges related to Earth, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/2017.spaceappschallenge.org\/challenges\/ideate-and-create\">Ideate + Create<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/2017.spaceappschallenge.org\/challenges\/our-ecological-neighborhood\">Our Ecological Neighborhood<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/2017.spaceappschallenge.org\/challenges\/warning-danger-ahead\">Warning! Danger Ahead<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/2017.spaceappschallenge.org\/challenges\/planetary-blues\">Planetary Blues<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/2017.spaceappschallenge.org\/challenges\/earth-and-us\">The Earth and Us<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Space Apps tradition, participants are invited to subscribe to a challenge and develop a project that responds to challenge prompts and themes, each site then selects two or three projects to progress to the broader international challenge rounds.<\/p>\n<p>This year, we partnered with the Space Apps NYC team to host a venue in <a href=\"https:\/\/2017.spaceappschallenge.org\/locations\/brooklyn-ny\/\">Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York, USA, Earth<\/a>, and wanted to share some highlights with our super-stellar and spatially-minded community of coders and scientists at Mozilla. Read on for some takeaways, featured projects and a recap of the weekend&#8217;s activities.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4104\" style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4104\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4104\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_3576-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4104\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Teams playing with donate hardware from Intel!<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<h2>What happened?<\/h2>\n<p>On April 28th-30th, we hosted an opening mixer and Data Camp for participants to learn from a few guest speakers on Geospatial Science, including <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/philogb?lang=en\">Nico Belmonte<\/a> who talked about the awesome open source developments in <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/04\/06\/ubers-open-source-data-visualization-tool-now-goes-beyond-maps\/\">Uber&#8217;s Deck.gl project<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mxxtxr?lang=en\">Peter Richardson<\/a>, who demoed some of the impressive graphics capabilities of\u00a0Mapzen&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/mapzen.com\/products\/tangram\/\">Tangram Open GL renderer<\/a>. We provided <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencehackdayny.github.io\/data-camp-17\/\">a cool website of Data Camp materials to all participants<\/a>, and <strong>you&#8217;re welcome to fork and reuse the guides<\/strong> for getting started with Github, working with APIs, playing with commodity hardware components and much more!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4106\" style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4106\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4106\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-19-at-4.12.37-PM-1024x562.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"395\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4106\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Our super-cute Data Camp Guidebook! <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencehackdayny.github.io\/data-camp-17\/\">Free and forkable<\/a>!<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Over the next two days, we hacked and snacked with <strong>a diverse group of 43 registrants<\/strong>, and<strong> a core set of about 6 teams<\/strong> to build cool prototypes and experiments around the Earth-themed challenges. Projects included small sensor networks to <a href=\"https:\/\/2017.spaceappschallenge.org\/challenges\/earth-and-us\/live-smart\/teams\/cool-it-out\/project\">detect residential temperatures and protect tenants rights in NYC<\/a>, a real-time <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RobbyKraft\/status\/858434883181477888\">tweet bot to\u00a0provide regular captions of lunar orbital trajectories<\/a>, an <a href=\"https:\/\/2017.spaceappschallenge.org\/challenges\/earth-and-us\/whats-dinner\/teams\/lca-cookbook\/project\">estimator for the eco-footprint of your food<\/a>, and a geospatial projects to <a href=\"https:\/\/2017.spaceappschallenge.org\/challenges\/earth-and-us\/you-are-my-sunshine\/teams\/gardnr\/project\">optimize green spaces and community gardens in urban environments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4107\" style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4107\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4107\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/FullSizeRender-2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4107\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Sweet swag from our sponsors: Mozilla Science, NASA, Carto, Socrata, Intel<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>We nominated two projects for\u00a0global jury consideration in Space Apps 2017.
