Now is your chance to propose a session in one of our five main event spaces, aligned with our 2017 Internet Health Report!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4151\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4151\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4151\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/30042446534_15e46cb1e7_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4151\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Ravensbourne is home \u00a0to Mozfest 2017 &#8211; 9 floors of magical maker space<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Earlier this year, we announced Mozilla&#8217;s focus on five key issues affecting <a href=\"https:\/\/internethealthreport.org\/v01\/\">Internet Health<\/a>: Decentralization, Privacy &amp; Security, Open Innovation, Web Literacy, and Digital Inclusion. For Mozfest 2017, the Science Lab is co-hosting the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mozillafestival.org\/spaces#Open-Innovation\">Open Innovation space<\/a>\u00a0and we&#8217;re\u00a0looking for participants from around the world to join us in\u00a0working on projects that further\u00a0open innovation in all of its permutations. Everyone passionate about the open web!<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>We&#8217;re particularly looking\u00a0for sessions that show how the Web can help researchers, developers, and librarians explore, remix, and hack at the intersection of science, data, policy and the Internet.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mozillafestival.org\/spaces#Open-Innovation\">Open Innovation<\/a> is a space for challenging and learning about open source, open projects and growth on the web. We\u2019ll investigate the challenges to open production (misinformation, draconian copyright) and the values of open creativity (working open techniques, tools and tactical transparency). The space is programmed as a highly-interactive platform for producing and protecting the principles of the open web.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>MozFest is not your typical conference \u2013 sessions are designed to be participatory, hands-on, multilingual and collaborative.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4148\" style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4148\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4148\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/mozfest-cfp-cyan_1760x800_ES-1024x465.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"327\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4148\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Did you know that we accept session proposals in multiple languages? S\u00ed\/Oui\/Ja..<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>We\u2019ll be soliciting proposals for the following session formats, anywhere from 45-90 minutes in duration:<\/p>\n<div id=\"magicdomid80\" class=\"\">\n<ul class=\"list-bullet2\">\n<li><span class=\"i\"><i><strong>Learning Forum<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/i><\/span><span class=\"\">for listening, learning and discussing individual topics. Sessions here develop and implement ideas for improvement, exchange or review. For ideas, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/mozillafestival.org\/projects\">the projects listed on our current site<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/mozilla.github.io\/global-sprint\/projects\/\">projects recruited for this year&#8217;s\u00a0Global Sprint<\/a>; these types of projects are all eligible as Mozfest session submission topics.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid81\" class=\"\">\n<ul class=\"list-bullet2\">\n<li><span class=\"i\"><i><strong>Gallery<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;<\/i><\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0contains interactive exhibits, installations, games, stalls designed for 1:1 self-driven experience and emergent activities. Often these experiences or activities are not scheduled time blocks but take place over the day or weekend allowing access and interaction at any time. The Gallery can provide context for upcoming sessions, and finished prototypes from sessions for that relevant Space.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid82\" class=\"\">\n<ul class=\"list-bullet2\">\n<li><span class=\"i\"><i><strong>Shed<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<\/i><\/span><span class=\"\">for hands-on making, hacking and prototyping. Sessions in the Shed require attendees to create and build code, objects or crafts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_4152\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4152\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4152\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/30603658396_9bc440568c_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4152\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Mozfest is a mutable space, that accommodates a range of session types and age groups<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"magicdomid83\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<h2>What makes for a good proposal ?<\/h2>\n<p>Sessions that are hands-on, educational and encourage collaboration in terms of not only the content but the groups involved, and that bring together a diverse set of partners. Keep in mind, we\u2019ll have an entire building full of educators, librarians, data experts from journalism to research to programming\u00a0and more. Think about how you can craft a session idea that could appeal to and utilize that collective brainpower. Your creativity, expertise, and contribution to the open web will not only benefit the Mozfest community, it will enhance your leadership skills.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4150\" style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4150\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4150\" src=\"https:\/\/mozscienceblog.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/DSCF9930-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4150\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Open Innovation Space initial planning!<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few ideas to get the creative juices flowing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Pursuing Progressive Policy Change<\/strong><\/em>: What are some of the blockers to open data\/science\/source policy in institutions and governmental agencies, how can we brainstorm ways to move beyond these limitations?<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Campaigning for Open<\/strong><\/em>: Have a campaign idea for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iheartopendata.org\/en-US\/\">open data or open science<\/a> or anything that innovates on the principles of an open web? Share it with us<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Citizen science and crowdsourcing:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0From LHC@Home and Zooniverse to crowdfunding, how can we use the web to make research more accessible and use the wisdom of the crowd?<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Empowering community leaders:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0What form does mentorship take to further open practice in science?
