{"id":7579,"date":"2015-03-27T14:46:38","date_gmt":"2015-03-27T18:46:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/?p=7579"},"modified":"2019-02-27T07:14:21","modified_gmt":"2019-02-27T15:14:21","slug":"moving-on-from-hive-toronto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/foundation-archive\/mozilla-science\/moving-on-from-hive-toronto\/","title":{"rendered":"Moving on from Hive Toronto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"magicdomid8\" class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"\">W<\/span><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">hen I joined Mozilla as the Director of Hive Toronto, the network was a small, dedicated community of youth-serving educators and organizations who had come together for 3 <a href=\"http:\/\/empathetics.org\/2013\/01\/28\/networked-innovation-and-hive-nyc-popups-as-particle-accelerators\/\" target=\"_blank\">pop-ups<\/a> to increase digital literacy learning opportunities for Toronto youth. Through this initial year, the seeds of a collaborative network had been planted. Toronto now had a community of educators and organizations eager to empower youth with the <a href=\"https:\/\/webmaker.org\/en-US\/resources\" target=\"_blank\">web literacy skills<\/a> necessary to participate in the culture, mechanics, and citizenship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"magicdomid9\" class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">Now, over 2 years later, with investment from the <a href=\"http:\/\/otf.ca\/?redirected=1\" target=\"_blank\">Ontario Trillium\u00a0 Foundation<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/cira-funding-announcement\/\" target=\"_blank\">.CA Community Investment Program<\/a>, and\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/portfolio\/privacybadges\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada<\/a>, and the essential work done with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.karenlouisesmith.net\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\">Karen Smith<\/a>, my Hive Toronto colleague, Hive has made extensive progress including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">Growing to over <a href=\"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/members\/\" target=\"_blank\">60 member organizations<\/a> <\/span>throughout<span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\"> Southern Ontario<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">Hosting more than 20 Hive meetups and 20 Hive community calls<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">Funding 13 projects with 19 Hive members, facilitated over 20 youth-facing events<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">Representing Hive and Mozilla at conferences and speaking engagements including sxswEDU, the Digital Media and Learning Conference, The Association for\u00a0 Media Literacy, and theOntario Library Association\u2019s Super Conference<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">Growing Hive communities in Waterloo and Vancouver<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"magicdomid16\" class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">It&#8217;s\u00a0 been amazing to lead an initiative that has impacted over 4000 youth and educators in just over two short years but it is now time for a new adventure. A few weeks ago I let Mozilla know that Monday, March 30th will be my last day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ace-line\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Hive-Toronto-workshop.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7616 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Hive-Toronto-workshop-300x224.png\" alt=\"Hive Toronto workshop\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"magicdomid18\" class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">I am excited to share that Hive Toronto will be left in the very capable hands of Karen Smith and Simona\u00a0 Ramkisson who will be Interim Hive Managers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"magicdomid20\" class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Karen-Smith.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-7595\" src=\"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Karen-Smith-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"Karen Smith\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Karen Smith has been working on Hive Toronto and Mozilla\u2019s digital literacy\u00a0 initiatives for the past several years. Karen came to Mozilla as a post-doctoral research fellow after completing her PhD in the Faculty of\u00a0 Information and Knowledge Media Design Institute at the University of\u00a0 Toronto. There is so much to choose from but I\u2019ve narrowed it down to 10 of my best and proudest memories of Hive Toronto moments:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">Dispersing $150,000 through Hive&#8217;s Collaborative Community Projects in <a href=\"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/new-hive-toronto-projects-coming-september-2013\/\" target=\"_blank\">2013<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/the-ontario-trillium-foundation-and-mozilla-award-77000-to-four-hive-toronto-collaborative-community-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\">2014,<\/a> funding cross-member projects to create new digital literacy learning opportunities through Hive Toronto<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">Dispersing $150,000 through Hive&#8217;s Collaborative Community Projects in <a href=\"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/new-hive-toronto-projects-coming-september-2013\/\" target=\"_blank\">2013<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/the-ontario-trillium-foundation-and-mozilla-award-77000-to-four-hive-toronto-collaborative-community-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\">2014,<\/a> funding cross-member projects to create new digital literacy learning opportunities through Hive Toronto<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">Organizing Hive\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/making-and-reflection-learnings-from-hive-torontos-nasa-youth-space-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\">NASA Youth Space Challenge Pop-up<\/a> at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) which was highlighted\u00a0 by <a href=\"http:\/\/open.nasa.gov\/blog\/2013\/06\/05\/mission-report-for-the-2013-international-space-apps-challenge\/\">NASA as an exemplary youth event<\/a> <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">Wrangling the <a href=\"http:\/\/hivenyc.org\/2013\/10\/29\/the-top-4-things-i-learned-at-my-first-mozfest\/\" target=\"_blank\">Youth Maker Party<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/2014.mozillafestival.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mozilla Festival<\/a> in London, UK with over 20 international partners hosting stations<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">Our Ca.Appable project funded by .CA to create curriculum, training, and tools to help\u00a0 educators teach app design and app-making<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">Our Privacy Badges project, funded by OPC to codesign badges and corresponding privacy curriculum with youth<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.mozilla.org\/Learning\/2015\" target=\"_blank\">Webmaker<\/a> workshop that had an unplanned all-female audience where youth unexpectedly used Webmaker to engage with <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.webmaker.org\/talk-back-to-the-news\" target=\"_blank\">current events<\/a> that were\u00a0 unfolding throughout the workshop<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">The evolution of <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.mozilla.org\/Learning\/2015\" target=\"_blank\">Mozilla Learning<\/a>, including the growth of Hive Global and Webmaker Clubs<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">Being invited to speak about Hive and Mozilla\u2019s work the Youth and Digital Skills Symposium, a national conference in Ottawa that brought together leaders in policy, education, and industry<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">Designing and facilitating digital literacy workshops for member organizations\u2019 staff including the\u00a0 Toronto Public Library and the City of Toronto<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">And last but definitely not least, t<\/span><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">he phenomenal Hive Toronto community. Member organizations range in size, mission, and content but what they all have in common is their commitment to increasing their youth\u2019s access to civic, educational, and personal opportunity through digital literacy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mozfest.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7618 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mozfest-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"mozfest\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"magicdomid38\" class=\"ace-line\">Thank you<\/h3>\n<p id=\"magicdomid39\" class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">With the growth and momentum of Hive Toronto and the Hive global model combined with learning now at the focus of Mozilla\u2019s multi-year\u00a0 strategic plan, I know the team is positioned to impact Canadian youth\u00a0 and educators better than ever before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ace-line\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Popcorn-Hackjam-girls-in-seats-talking-300x300.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7617\" src=\"http:\/\/hivetoronto.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Popcorn-Hackjam-girls-in-seats-talking-300x300-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Popcorn-Hackjam-girls-in-seats-talking-300x300\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"magicdomid41\" class=\"ace-line\"><span class=\"author-g-ilcw6kmm2y614oqs\">A sincere thank\u00a0 you to every Hive Toronto member, Mozillian, partner, volunteer, funder, and colleague who has helped to impact youth through moving Hive\u00a0 Toronto forward.
