{"id":8926,"date":"2015-04-30T09:06:31","date_gmt":"2015-04-30T14:06:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hivekc.org\/?p=8926"},"modified":"2019-02-26T12:40:22","modified_gmt":"2019-02-26T20:40:22","slug":"the-mozilla-effect-high-impact-change-agents-accelerate-learning-for-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/foundation-archive\/mozilla-learning\/the-mozilla-effect-high-impact-change-agents-accelerate-learning-for-all\/","title":{"rendered":"The Mozilla Effect &#8211; high-impact change agents accelerate learning for all"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s been an intense fifteen months. \u00a0I started at Mozilla in January 2014 as a \u201ccommunity catalyst\u201d tasked with constructing the social scaffolding that would support the experimental <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/en-US\/gigabit\/\">Gigabit Community Fund<\/a> project and fertilize the Kansas City environment so a Hive Learning Community could take root. \u00a0We funded <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.mozilla.org\/Webmaker\/HiveKansasCity\">nine Gigabit Fund pilot projects<\/a> hosted in more than 24 educational spaces and created <a href=\"http:\/\/hivekc.org\/\">Hive KC<\/a> with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcdigitaldrive.org\/article\/kc-digital-drive-and-hive-kc-launch-new-education-fund\/\">locally created fund<\/a> to support innovative projects, like <a href=\"http:\/\/kcwomenintech.org\/programs\/tech-sheroes\/\">Tech sHeroes<\/a> that champion digital literacy and connected learning in K-12.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8914\" src=\"http:\/\/ec2-54-81-113-27.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Hive_Community_Kansas_City_20151-300x152.jpg\" alt=\"Hive_Community_Kansas_City_2015\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" \/>I could never have imagined Mozilla\u2019s effect on Kansas City, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/kansascity\/news\/2015\/04\/21\/exclusive-think-big-partners-hires-executive.html\">me<\/a> for that matter. \u00a0I think the speed of Mozilla\u2019s process, the rapid flow of expectations, deliverables and open practices all give way to a ripple that churns activity at a constant clip, pushes impact out with force, and illuminates a path forward allowing others to contribute.<br \/>\nIn 2014, we opened two rounds of funding, reviewed over 40 gigabit-inspired concepts, funded 9 of them with $162,500 over two 12-week pilot periods, analyzed their impact and efficacy and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/gigabit\/project-midterms-the-view-and-report-from-the-front-lines\/\">reported<\/a> our findings to the broader community, hosted a couple hack jams <i>and<\/i> more than 45 community events. In January of this year, we designed an entire Education track for the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/gigabit\/catalytic-education-event-gigabit-city-summit\/\">Gigabit City Summit<\/a> featuring speakers like <a href=\"http:\/\/tech.ed.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Richard-Culatta-web1.jpg\">Richard Culatta<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/gettingsmart.com\/about\/tom-vander-ark\/\">Tom Vander Ark<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tynker.com\/about\/team\">Krishna Vedati<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynlaboratoryschool.org\/#!brooklyn-lab-leadership\/c323\">Erin Mote<\/a>, and it was standing room only.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/B7QzCKqCYAQxndO.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard Culatta, Director, US Dept. of Education, Office of Ed Tech hosts a fireside chat at Gigabit City Summit 2015 in Kansas City<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nThroughout the entire project, we racked up some miles taking our talent (and projects) to some pretty amazing places. \u00a0We went to DC often &#8211; once to mingle with NSF\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/gigabit\/cyberlearning-2015-connect-collaborate-and-create-the-future\/\">Cyberlearning<\/a> cohort, a few times to join a series of events that catapulted <a href=\"http:\/\/planitimpact.com\">PlanIT Impact<\/a> onto the <a href=\"https:\/\/us-ignite.org\/globalcityteams\/actioncluster\/iP8vMr4BWcteoFzprEujvm\/\">smart applications<\/a> stage, and most recently to the US Ignite Application Summit entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/gigabit\/the-importance-of-the-gig-in-chattanooga-and-everywhere\/\">Smart Future 2015<\/a>. \u00a0We took our <a href=\"http:\/\/hivekc.org\/portfolio\/minecraft-gives-kids-voice-community\/\">Kansas City Public Library\u2019s virtual reality project<\/a> team to London for the Global Hive Meetup at MozFest. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thegigabots.com\">The Gigabots<\/a> went on tour several times including the <a href=\"https:\/\/us-ignite.org\/apps\/gigabots\/\">2014 US Ignite Application Summit<\/a> in Sunnyvale, complete with a main stage demo, then onto KC\u2019s Maker Faire and New York City\u2019s Summer Quest.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 611px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/thegigabots.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/makerfairekc_collage-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"400\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Gigabots at Maker Faire KC<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nI call it the Mozilla Effect. \u00a0Mozilla is special &#8211; they are unique from their very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/en-US\/about\/history\/\">origin<\/a> story, but also from the unique way in which they operate around the globe. \u00a0They are global, yet hyper local. \u00a0They are a nonprofit, yet with a savviness and influence reserved for respected, tenured corporations. \u00a0The brand stands with such a knowing force &#8211; both of their purpose and of the impact within their army of followers that contribute to their cause.
