No homework! More time with friends and family. The beach, city parks, swimming! The opportunity to find a job, earn some money and make new friends.<br \/>\nWe see summer as a perfect time for exploration, whether it\u2019s checking out a new neighborhood you\u2019ve never visited or pursuing a new interest. It\u2019s also a time for making things, and there\u2019s a LOT of making going on across <a href=\"http:\/\/explorecreateshare.org\">Hive NYC Learning Network<\/a>.<br \/>\nOn July 11, 2013, teens were doing everything from printing 3D dinosaur bones at the <a href=\"http:\/\/amnh.org\">American Museum of Natural History<\/a> and making drawbots at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eyebeam.org\" target=\"_blank\">Eyebeam<\/a> Art + Technology Center, to engineering gears with straws, sticks and bamboo at <a href=\"http:\/\/iridescentlearning.org\" target=\"_blank\">Iridescent<\/a> and fliming stop-motion animation with paper dolls at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysci.org\" target=\"_blank\">New York Hall of Science<\/a>.<br \/>\nThis summer, we\u2019re celebrating all of the amazing things we can make (and show others how to make too!) as part of Mozilla\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/webmaker.org\/party\" target=\"_blank\">Maker Party<\/a>, and as you can see from the map below, Hive NYC is throwing a city-wide party!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?ie=UTF&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=209170350049746187673.0004e12c0d924dab5f04c\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/explorecreateshare.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/screen-shot-2013-07-11-at-4-06-13-pm.png?w=355&amp;h=422\" width=\"284\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a glimpse into exciting programs happening in one day across Hive NYC member organizations:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/explorecreateshare.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/tumblr_m7bo0djjot1rt1ql8.jpg?w=300&amp;h=200\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bronx Museum, \u201cThe People Make the Park\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nTeens in grades 10-12 are <a href=\"http:\/\/peoplemakethepark2012.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">creating audio podcasts that will be exhibited<\/a> on Randall\u2019s Island Park. Today they\u2019re making plans for interviewing local artists, community members, activists, and professionals to help them tell the story of the park!<br \/>\n<strong>Iridescent Summer Camp<\/strong><br \/>\nIn <a href=\"http:\/\/iridescentlearning.org\" target=\"_blank\">this three-week program<\/a>, students entering grades 3\u20138 are immersed in hands-on science and engineering. Today they\u2019re designing shadow boxes with moving parts powered by gears, and when they put them all together and turn the crank, they\u2019ll tell a story about flight.<br \/>\n<strong>The POINT and Global Action Project, SYEP Summer Camp Power Point<\/strong><br \/>\nIn this collaboration, teen activists from <a href=\"http:\/\/thepoint.org\" target=\"_blank\">The POINT\u2019s A.C.T.I.O.N.<\/a> program will identify social and environmental justice issues facing Hunts Point, and will work with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.global-action.org\" target=\"_blank\">Global Action Project<\/a> to produce media in response to these issues.<br \/>\n<strong>DreamYard Open Studio<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dreamyard.com\" target=\"_blank\">DreamYard<\/a> hosts open studio hours for the community, giving young people in the neighborhood the opportunity to use their resources and continue to hone new tech and art skills. Today they\u2019re doing everything from designing clothes to making digital beats.<br \/>\n<strong>American Museum of Natural History:<\/strong> <strong>Capturing Dinosaurs: Reconstructing Extinct Species Through Digital Fabrication<\/strong><br \/>\nHigh school students are connecting with their inner paleontologists as they learn about dinosaur fossils and how to make their own dinosaur models using the latest 3D capturing, modeling, and printing technology. Today they\u2019re touring <a href=\"http:\/\/amnh.org\" target=\"_blank\">the museum<\/a> and exploring 3D scanning techniques.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/explorecreateshare.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/screen-shot-2013-07-10-at-7-04-23-pm.png?w=368&amp;h=226\" width=\"284\" height=\"175\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eyebeam Art + Technology Center and World UP: Digital Day Camp<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.summer2013.scrapyardchallenge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">This program<\/a> introduces students to hacking and remixing by creating digital and analog instruments out of recycled electronics, trash, and other materials. Today they\u2019re creating Drawbots, simple drawing robots built from cups, markers and motors, as an exercise in \u201cphysical programming.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>New York City Writing Project: Youth Voices Summer Writing Program<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/nycwritingproject.org\" target=\"_blank\">Fifteen high school students and five teachers<\/a> are using new technologies to publish their own digital stories, poems, essays, music, and videos on the <a href=\"http:\/\/youthvoices.net\" target=\"_blank\">Youth Voices social network<\/a>. Today they\u2019re working on writer profiles, using Google Drawing to create avatars, and writing one-paragraph bios.<br \/>\n<strong>Cooper Hewitt DesignPrep<\/strong><br \/>\nIn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhewitt.org\/events\/designprep\" target=\"_blank\">this free program<\/a>, high school students learn about college and career opportunities in design through hands-on activities led by professional designers, studio visits and workshops. Today they\u2019re visiting luxury jeweler Van Cleef &amp; Arpels to watch designers and jewelers as they create timeless pieces.<br \/>\n<strong>Museum of Modern Art and Eyebeam Art + Technology Center: CLICK@MoMA: 3-D Printers and Artistic Hacking<\/strong><br \/>\nParticipants in <a href=\"http:\/\/moma.org\" target=\"_blank\">this workshop<\/a> are using 3D printers to create sculptural objects and explore ideas surrounding artistic hacking. It\u2019s an inter-dimensional exploration without having to leave the city!<br \/>\n<strong>Bank Street College of Education: Summer Institute: Liberty LEADS<\/strong><br \/>\nOver 40 students, ages 13 to 18, are participating in <a href=\"http:\/\/bankstreet.edu\" target=\"_blank\">a variety of classes and activities<\/a>, from writing and science to web design and chorus. Today, in the Web Design course, students are learning how to use Mozilla Webmaker tools to create new and remixed content on the web.<br \/>\n<strong>Groundswell: Summer Leadership Institute<\/strong> <strong>(SLI)<\/strong><br \/>\nIn this summer job training program, 100 young adults ages 14-24 divide into seven teams to work with professional artists and community-based organizations to create public art across NYC. Today in Brooklyn, <a href=\"http:\/\/groundswellmural.org\" target=\"_blank\">Groundswell<\/a> teen artists are planning how they\u2019ll use art as a tool to transform an uninspiring underpass into an inviting gateway between the vibrant shopping district on Atlantic Avenue and the beautifully restored Brooklyn Bridge Park.<br \/>\n<strong>Museum of the Moving Image: Game Design Camp at BAM<\/strong><br \/>\nEducators from <a href=\"http:\/\/movingimage.us\" target=\"_blank\">the Museum<\/a> are running a video game design camp at BAM this week, where students are learning basic programming skills to create their own games. Today they\u2019re broadening the multi-sensory experience of game play by adding sounds to their projects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/24.media.tumblr.com\/f756c704d6a5fefda4c8cafed1030d91\/tumblr_mp613zkFu91rophsyo1_1280.jpg\" width=\"302\" height=\"226\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>New York Hall of Science: Makerspace<\/strong><br \/>\nToday, <a href=\"http:\/\/nysci.org\" target=\"_blank\">NYSCI\u2019s<\/a> Maker Corps members are prototyping life casting with saran wrap and tape, and designing stop-motion animation activities using paper dolls and small toys.
