{"id":1602,"date":"2013-05-16T19:28:58","date_gmt":"2013-05-16T19:28:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/futurereleases\/?p=1602"},"modified":"2013-05-16T19:28:58","modified_gmt":"2013-05-16T19:28:58","slug":"firefox-beta-now-includes-webrtc-on-by-default","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/futurereleases\/2013\/05\/16\/firefox-beta-now-includes-webrtc-on-by-default\/","title":{"rendered":"Firefox Beta now includes WebRTC on by default"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/futurereleases\/2013\/01\/12\/capture-local-camera-and-microphone-streams-with-getusermedia-now-enabled-in-firefox\/\">we announced<\/a> that getUserMedia was the first component of WebRTC to be enabled by default in Firefox and following this we <a href=\"https:\/\/hacks.mozilla.org\/2013\/02\/hello-chrome-its-firefox-calling\/\">announced WebRTC interoperability with Chrome<\/a>. getUserMedia allows camera and microphone stream capture.<\/p>\n<p>Now the latest release of Firefox Beta includes the remaining WebRTC components, PeerConnection and DataChannels, on by default. PeerConnection allows the Firefox browser to set up real-time audio\/video calls, and DataChannels allow browsers to share almost any kind of data (text, video files, html pages) peer-to-peer, either during or outside a video call, for example, by dragging an item into a chat window. DataChannels are used today to reduce latency in real-time games by <a href=\"https:\/\/hacks.mozilla.org\/2013\/03\/webrtc-data-channels-for-great-multiplayer\/\">allowing gaming apps to connect peer-to-peer<\/a>. And with WebRTC now on by default in Firefox Beta, developers can test WebRTC much more widely than before because Firefox users won&#8217;t have to enable WebRTC in their preferences.<\/p>\n<p>In upcoming releases you can expect to see:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Traversal_Using_Relay_NAT\">TURN<\/a> support &#8212; which enables two WebRTC end points to connect even when the NATs at both ends would otherwise cause the call to fail<\/li>\n<li>Audio\/video improvements<\/li>\n<li>Android support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To test WebRTC now, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/beta\/\">download Firefox Beta here <\/a>and refer <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/en-US\/docs\/WebRTC\">to the WebRTC page on MDN<\/a>.
