{"id":197,"date":"2015-01-17T16:38:21","date_gmt":"2015-01-18T00:38:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/gigabit\/?p=197"},"modified":"2015-01-18T05:51:25","modified_gmt":"2015-01-18T13:51:25","slug":"catalytic-education-event-gigabit-city-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/gigabit\/catalytic-education-event-gigabit-city-summit\/","title":{"rendered":"Catalytic Education Event @ Gigabit City Summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Gigabit City Summit was an experience, both social and technical, that laid out Kansas City&#8217;s bi-state <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcdigitaldrive.org\/playbook\/\">Playbook<\/a> for all to see, poke at, learn from and, when it&#8217;s all said and done &#8211; take back to their blooming broadband communities.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t hurt that on Wednesday, there was a hearty boost from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2015\/01\/white-house-community-broadband\/\">White House<\/a> when <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.webmaker.org\/ahead-of-the-game-on-obamas-call-for-broadband\">President Obama supported<\/a> municipal broadband with spunk, from Cedar Falls, IA, not leaving out a mention to the trailblazers of Kansas City, <a href=\"http:\/\/chattanoogagig.com\/\">Chattanooga<\/a> and a solid shout out to our friends at <a href=\"http:\/\/nextcenturycities.org\/\">Next Century Cities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/cdno.gettingsmart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/gigabit-483x335-482x335.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"482\" height=\"335\" \/><\/p>\n<p>No doubt you&#8217;re curious about what happens (or DID happen) at the Gigabit City Summit. And doing things.\u00a0 With us.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/mozilla.org\">Mozilla<\/a> sponsored the Edu Track that opened on Tuesday afternoon with a rush of energy from Tom Vander Ark (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tvanderark\">@tvanderark<\/a>), CEO at <a href=\"http:\/\/gettingsmart.com\">Getting Smart<\/a>.\u00a0 He presented an engaging and interactive session on next generation learning for smart cities based his latest book &#8211; the headline and inspiration for the Edu content &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/gettingsmart.com\/publication\/smartcities\/\"><em>Smart Cities That Work For Everyone &#8211; 7 Keys to Education and Employment<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 It was standing room-only, and in case you missed the event, or if you just want to recollect and review what to do now, Tom&#8217;s presentation is shared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/fwzjrkgd9ggrpk9\/smart%20cities%20gigabit%200115.pptx?dl=0\">here<\/a>, and you can check out his <a href=\"http:\/\/gettingsmart.com\/2015\/01\/gigabit-cities-expanding-education-employment-entrepreneurship\/\">blog<\/a> on the Summit, too.<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/B7QFy25CcAEgRVa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Krishna Vedati (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kvedati\">@kvedati<\/a>) was on deck to showcase STEM learning from the perspective of his edutainment company, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tynker.com\/\">Tynker<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gotynker\">@gotynker<\/a>), and he delivered a high-energy look inside Tynker&#8217;s games and the education principles they support.<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/B7QT-qDCQAAjzp1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"447\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A local panel of experts, led by Dr. Ray Daniels, former Superintendent of Kansas City, Kansas Public schools (see Vander Ark&#8217;s blog on Daniels&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/gettingsmart.com\/2013\/06\/smart-cities-kansas-city\/\">dramatic improvement efforts), <\/a>talked about the road to connectivity, digital inclusion and lessons learned with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lsr7.org\/\">Lee\u2019s Summit<\/a> EdTech leader Kyle Pace (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kylepace\">@KylePace<\/a>), Joe Fives, CTO of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcpublicschools.org\/\">KCK Public Schools<\/a>, and Susan Wally, President of\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prepkc.org\/\">PrepKC <\/a>(<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/prepkc\">@PrepKC<\/a>).<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/B7QcgB7CMAAOMf2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A national panel stocked with three EdTech super stars, including Richard Culatta (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rec54\">@rec54<\/a>), Director of Office of Education Technology (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/usedgov\">@usedgov<\/a>), Erin Mote (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/erinmote\">@erinmote<\/a>), founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynlaboratoryschool.org\/\">Brooklyn Lab<\/a> (<a href=\"about:blank\">@BklynLabSchool<\/a>) and Lev Gonick (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/levgonick\">@levgonick<\/a>), CEO <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onecommunity.org\/\">OneCommunity<\/a> created a lightening rod for next gen learning with a spotlight on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.gov\/blog\/author\/rculatta\/\">Equity<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/emote\/the-currency-of-connectivity-reimagining-the-future-of-education\">Human Capital<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.educause.edu\/members\/lev-s-gonick\">Collaboration<\/a>.<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/B7QoohFCQAAI6yj.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The event capped with a Fireside Chat with Richard Culatta which provided local educators and conference goers a chance to ask questions in an informal setting.\u00a0 Culatta was honest and inspiring as he shared his work and vision for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.futurereadyschools.org\/site\/default.aspx?PageID=1\">Future Ready<\/a> Schools and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/issues\/education\/k-12\/connected\">ConnectED<\/a>.\u00a0 <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/B7QzCKqCYAQxndO.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Education in gigabit cities is here.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s talk.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Gigabit City Summit was an experience, both social and technical, that laid out Kansas City&#8217;s bi-state Playbook for all to see, poke at, learn from and, when it&#8217;s all said and done &#8211;
