Could Firefox be doing something better with it? The answer is almost certainly yes, but the question is what?<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Initial Ideas &amp; Mockups<\/h2>\n<p>To get the ball rolling, we are highlighting two early <a href=\"http:\/\/labs.mozilla.com\/projects\/concept-series\/\">concepts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first is Aza Raskin&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.azarask.in\/blog\/post\/new-tabs\/\">Contextual New-Tab Actions<\/a>, which is a look at using the power of context and contextual actions to enhance the browsing experience through a smarter new tab. Its main goals are to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Simplify the common actions, like being on a page and needing to perform a look-up on some text. Right now you have to copy the text, open a new tab, go to a new web service, and paste it in. If the browser knows you&#8217;ve just selected an address and then opened a tab, it knows you&#8217;ll probably want to map it. Let&#8217;s give the user one-click access to mapping it.<\/li>\n<li>Streamline your habits. If you always visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\">TechCrunch<\/a> after reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slashdot.org\">Slashdot<\/a>, the browser can offer you one-click navigation from a new tab.<\/li>\n<li>Super-charge search. You often go to a new tab to start a search action: Make that front and center.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The ideas are meant to be mix-and-match, not necessarily all used together.<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"540\" height=\"407\"><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.vimeo.com\/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=1474467&amp;server=www.vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=cc6600&amp;fullscreen=1\" \/><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.vimeo.com\/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=1474467&amp;server=www.vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=cc6600&amp;fullscreen=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"540\" height=\"407\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<h3>Experimental Add-On<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ed.agadak.net\/\">Edward Lee<\/a>, the main developer of the <a href=\"http:\/\/ed.agadak.net\/2008\/07\/firefox-31-restricts-matches-keywords\">Awesome Bar<\/a> in Firefox 3, has already starting experimenting with a <a href=\"http:\/\/ed.agadak.net\/2008\/08\/auto-dial-beta-add-on-for-quick-page-access\">zero-configuration new-tab extension<\/a>. Try it out.<\/p>\n<h3>Ambient News<\/h3>\n<p>The second is Atul Varma&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toolness.com\/wp\/?p=158\">Ambient News<\/a>, an experiment into how Firefox could learn from your habits to give you the news you care about in the new tab area. Its goal are to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide the user with zero-configuration news about the sites that they visit frequently.<\/li>\n<li>Explore how to bring the benefits of RSS to a wider audience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><object width=\"540\" height=\"339\"><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.vimeo.com\/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=1601371&amp;server=www.vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=00ADEF&amp;fullscreen=1\" \/><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.vimeo.com\/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=1601371&amp;server=www.vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=00ADEF&amp;fullscreen=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"540\" height=\"339\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<h2>Get Involved<\/h2>\n<p>So what do you think about these ideas? They are not meant as static artifacts, but as a launchpad for thinking about better ways to use the new-tab workflow.
