Over the past few weeks, the Knight Foundation and Mozilla have been running a series of news innovation challenges<\/a>. The goal: get the world\u2019s smartest hackers, designers, and tech-savvy journalists thinking about how news organizations can harness the open web.<\/p>\n

Today, submissions are open<\/a> for the final news innovation challenge. The topic: ‘People-Powered News<\/a>‘ \u2014 harnessing the power of the web to make news better for the people who create and read it<\/a>. Of course, there\u2019s a twist \u2014 you can only use open web technologies<\/a>. That means no Flash, iOS, or any other proprietary SDKs.<\/strong><\/p>\n

How do we get data, reporting and local knowledge into the hands of users, wherever they are, no matter what devices and platforms they\u2019re using? This is an open-ended opportunity to share your world-shattering news innovation concept. <\/p>\n

Remember, you could end up with a paid fellowship to work on this problem inside Al Jazeera English, the BBC, Boston.com, the Guardian, or Zeit Online<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Open Web Opportunity<\/h2>\n

For this challenge, we\u2019re looking for your most revolutionary ideas. How can we harness the open web\u2014the technologies, the connections, and the people\u2014to make news better for the people who create and read it? What should a news website look like in 2011 and beyond?<\/p>\n

We\u2019re not talking about infographics, mashups, or interface tweaks. We\u2019re not talking about solving corporate IT problems. We\u2019re talking about reaching right into the core of journalistic endeavors and hacking the system. <\/p>\n

How to Enter<\/h2>\n

To enter, simply submit a rough idea or napkin sketch<\/a>. You can do this however you see fit. For this first stage, we\u2019re interested in learning how you would tackle the problem. We can work together to advance your ideas.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

For the final MoJo challenge, we\u2019re looking to you for this kind of radical thinking. We want to work with you to develop new technologies to inform, educate, and enlighten. We think that participation is the key. And we think journalism can learn a lot from the open web here.<\/p>\n

Winners of the first round go on to build prototypes<\/a>, attend a news innovation workshop in Berlin, and may even take on a one-year paid fellowship to build their apps.<\/p>\n
