{"id":1374,"date":"2009-11-10T16:41:31","date_gmt":"2009-11-10T23:41:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/?p=1374"},"modified":"2019-09-18T12:05:39","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T19:05:39","slug":"what-people-say-after-installing-firefox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/2009\/11\/10\/what-people-say-after-installing-firefox\/","title":{"rendered":"What People Say After Installing Firefox"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s start with the punch line:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People love Firefox!<\/li>\n<li>There is a small segment of existing users running into a particular problem \u2013 Firefox is not saving their preferences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Taking a step back, let\u2019s walk through how we arrived at these findings.\u00a0 We previously described our efforts <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/2009\/10\/08\/user-outreach-coming-to-mozilla-com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">integrating user outreach<\/a> into mozilla.com.\u00a0 For this post, we\u2019re going to focus just on comments left by users during their visit to the Firefox <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.com\/en-US\/firefox\/3.5.5\/firstrun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cFirst Run\u201d page<\/a>, which brand new users hit upon downloading\/installing Firefox for the first time (analysis of the Whatsnew and Getting Started pages will soon follow).<\/p>\n<p>About 1,200 people left feedback over the past month, and below is a breakdown of the feedback.\u00a0 If you\u2019re curious how this worked from the user\u2019s perspective, click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.com\/en-US\/firefox\/3.5.5\/firstrun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> to the firstrun page and then click on the orange feedback button.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1375\" title=\"firstrun_pie_chart\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2009\/11\/firstrun_pie_chart.png\" alt=\"firstrun_pie_chart\" width=\"476\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2009\/11\/firstrun_pie_chart.png 476w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2009\/11\/firstrun_pie_chart-300x277.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 476px) 100vw, 476px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, overall, the feedback looks really amazing.\u00a0 For such a high percentage of people to go out of their way to say something positive is incredible.<\/p>\n<p>On the downside, there were two issues identified by users that we weren\u2019t previously aware of:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Many people complained about the open video freezing.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure exactly what the issue is, but we can note that the next version of this page (for Fx3.6) will not include the same video.<\/li>\n<li>Perhaps more critically, many users talked about their frustration around Firefox not saving their settings.\u00a0 The most common comment was along the lines of, <strong>\u201cwhy does this page open every time I open Firefox?\u00a0 Please get rid of it.\u00a0 I previously set my home page and Firefox won\u2019t save the setting.\u201d<\/strong> In addition, some people noted other preferences\/settings not saving \u2013 add-ons, personas, favorites and bookmarks.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>How do we know that this latter group of users is frustrated?\u00a0 In addition to reading their actual comments, we can also look at the average satisfaction score (scale of 1 to 5) left by users in each feedback group.\u00a0 The findings are below\u2026 it\u2019s pretty clear that this group, with a satisfaction score of 1.9, has been feeling extremely frustrated.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1376\" title=\"firstrun_satisfaction\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2009\/11\/firstrun_satisfaction.png\" alt=\"firstrun_satisfaction\" width=\"442\" height=\"127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2009\/11\/firstrun_satisfaction.png 442w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2009\/11\/firstrun_satisfaction-300x86.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the good news?<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to this insight, we\u2019ve been able to prioritize a fix via <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=495735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bug 495735<\/a>, and we\u2019re hoping to ship it in the next release of Firefox!\u00a0 Thanks to Dietrich Ayala, Mats Palmgren, the Firefox team, and several others for making this happen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s start with the punch line: People love Firefox!
